Say goodbye to the Pontiac and Saturn brands

Posted Nov 2nd 2010 12:45PM

Looks like it's time to say goodbye to the Pontiac brand of vehicles.

According to recent reports, GM has finally decided to phase out the car. The Saturn brand has already been shut down and as of now the company has started shutting down Saturn dealerships in the U.S.

It's been a long time coming as rumours of the phase-out and shutdown have been around for more than a year.

According to GM, the company will no longer manufacture any Saturn brands after 2011. It also plans on phasing out the Pontiac, stating that the car never provided the sales the company needed.

These moves are meant to save the company money. GM was one of the big three American car manufacturers hit hard by the recent recession. The U.S. government extended billion-dollar loans to help save the company and hundreds of manufacturing jobs.

Also on the chopping block is the Hummer. GM is hoping an interested party will buy the brand. If not, that vehicle line may also be shut down. Hummer has been on the selling block for more than a year. It was almost sold to China's Hunan Chengfeng Motor Company, but that deal was never closed.
