Kia Canada and MADD partner for the 2011 Targa Newfoundland

Posted Sep 12th 2011 2:30PM

Since September, 2002, the province of Newfoundland has opened its roads to motorsport enthusiasts for the now World Famous Targa Newfoundland. Originally marketed as a tarmac rally for vintage race cars, in the spirit of historic events like the Targa Florio, the Canadian event has grown to include modern vehicles as well.

The annual event has proven to be a useful marketing tool by several auto manufacturers, most notably Kia who have entered vehicles in Targa as early as the first year. In the past, Kia products have won their class several times. For the 2011 running, Kia will once again join the fray..

Veteran auto racer and writer Jacques Deshaies will drive the race prepared Kia Forte Koup, while fellow scribe Shaun Keenan will ride shotgun calling out the directions. The car will wear number 99 in honour of the year that Kia Canada was founded.

For this event, Kia Canada is partnered with MADD to promote their "I pledge to drive safe and sober" campaign. Fittingly, the effort has been dubbed Team Designated Drivers.

Targa Newfoundland runs from September 10-17, with the official start of the race today.
