For the first time since becoming the CEO of General Motors a year ago, Dan Akerson recently made the trek to Oshawa to visit the The General's state of the art assembly plant.

Part of his tour of the company's Canadian manufacturing facilities, the Oshawa Assembly Plant recently underwent a $740 Million conversion to a flexible production facility. The first product to roll off the new line was the 2010 Chevy Camaro, soon followed by Buick's newest Regal. The plant houses another "Consolidated" line which produces the Chevrolet Impala. The Consolidated line paints and assembles the Chevrolet Equinox using bodies that are built in the Ingersoll, Ontario CAMI plant.

Having produced 286,639 vehicles in 2010, the Oshawa plant has a history of quality, winning four gold and three silver awards from J.D. Power over the past eight years for plant quality. Equally impressive is the Harbour Productivity Report which has ranked the Canadian facility as one of the top two plants across the continent for the past five years.

On his tour, Akerson was accompanied by GM Canada President, Kevin Williams, North American Global Chief Manufacturing Officer Diana Tremblay and Manufacturing Manager Jim Glynn. The foursome visited every department, meeting with employees and learning about the capabilities of the unique flex facility.
