Honda EV-STER headed for production

Honda EV-STER

Combining electric propulsion with a performance orientation is a delicate balance. Tesla managed to pull it off to some success. Audi has toyed with the idea with its E-Tron concepts. And some have been experimenting with bringing F1's KERS regenerative braking system to road-going sports cars.

Honda, for its part, tried to nail it down with the CR-Z, which was supposed to be a hybrid sport-hatch, but like the Lexus CT 200h, it ended up lacking in the "sport" part of the equation. Which is why this latest development has caught our attention.

Just a few weeks ago at the Tokyo Motor Show, Honda showed off a tempting little package called the EV-STER. The concept spoke of a zippy little ride around town, all on electric power. Now, reports are indicating that, based on positive feedback from the show, Honda has already decided to green-light the project and put it into production. Sources suggest it will be ready sometime in the new year ahead, and could offer a more conventional gasoline engine in addition to the electric powertrain.

Of course none of this is to say that Honda would bring the production EV-STER to the North American market, but we'll be excited if it gets built at all.

I understand the negative comments here. Based on what Honda has done lately it would be easy to think the worst but all indications are is that Honda has been listening to the criticism. The new CRV looks good and has been getting great reviews. They are going to fix the cheap interiors of the new Civic next year and they have already announced the new range of DI engines that will see them regain the fuel efficiency leadership that Honda has always been known for. Next comes the fun driving characteristics that they have been lacking on with a new NSX super car on the way, a SI/ type R version of the CRZ and a new sport entry level Acura. The auto show next month will set the stage for what direction Honda is going in and my research suggests that this company is back and in a big way!

Wow I was all set to come in with a tirade here against Honda and the direction the company has taken in the 21st century but then I read "bluetheimpala" comment and he has me covered.

Just to be clear I agree wholeheartedly with what he says. The EV-STER that finally bows to showrooms will look more like a Civic Si and less like the future tron roadster that is pictured here in these fairy tale concept photos. So I am picturing the car with 16" standard alloys, maybe 17", NO targa roof or even an that option, absolutely NO external lighting on the vehicle save for traditional headlamps and brake lights, standardized interior with a standard full steering wheel. All in all - very boring - very uninspiring - an oh so Honda.

SHAME HONDA ! S-H-A-M-E !

Nope, not going to happen. Anyone who has followed honda for the last 10 years knows the company is completely lost and has the worst track record for taking concepts to production.

Sure it looks cool as a concept, the next reveal will also be cool but once they get it into production watch as all the cool melts away. Right off the bat, ambient lighting is illegal in many, if not most, countries. You can't have cars spewing out different colours just because it looks hot at SEMA or in a music video.

The LED headlights, just look back at the CRZ to see what happens. And don't even get me started on the interior. Whatever they've shown, 10% will make it in there. Again, look at another concept that they, sort of, produced namely the FCX.

1) Bring back the NSX
2) Make the Civix a class competitor
3) Bring back the soul into honda products

That's how you revise the big 'H' not with silly concepts that are basically a joke.
