Shocking deer crash destroys Corvette Z06 during race [w/video]

Posted Jun 18th 2012 11:28AM

The serious crash damage done to this C5 Corvette Z06 at HyperFest was far from the usual race track horror story we tend to hear. This incident is a wild tale caught on camera, involving a rather large deer versus one extremely shocked Corvette enthusiast at Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia.

The amazing deer crash video shows the quick Z06 tearing along the raceway, until a deer suddenly darts out in front of it and nearly kills the driver as it comes crashing through the Vette's windshield. As you can see, the chunks of deer hide remain spread across the hood/headlight area of the car, as the sheer impact caused some costly destruction.

According to the Corvette's owner, a worker at the track told him the deer had been spotted running around inside the track and after wiping out, the animal got up and jumped over the tire barrier... right onto the track!

"I didn't see him until he hit asphalt and already turned the braking all the way up to "whoaaaaaa" for turn 1 so I was toast!" said the shaken Corvette driver.

HyperFest (best described as an automotive amusement park) draws thousands of gearheads annually, and after this crazy crash we're sure one less driver will be in attendance next year. With a vanity plate stating "FST LRNR" we're sure this Vette won't be back on the track for a while.

If you watch it frame by frame the deer's severed head comes flying through the windshield, but to the passenger side. Had it gone the other way, he likely would have been injured. My own vehicle striking a deer off angle went off the road. It's not hard to imagine how this could have ended worse.

And he says the car won't be back for awhile, not the driver.

The person who wrote this makes some pretty wild assumptions, saying the deer almost killed the driver when it didn't even come close; then saying the driver will never do a track event again. Does the writer believe everybody who hits a deer with a car gives up driving?
