Rumour has it that if you give Canadian engine tuner Nicolas Brunet a 2.0-litre, turbocharged General Motors Ecotec motor, he'll make it capable of breaking the quarter-mile record for four-cylinder door-slammers. We say "rumour" because this news apparently hasn't been independently confirmed yet, but at Napierville Dragway in Quebec the funny car you see above ran 6.75 at 206 mph.
Should it be verified, it will be the new world record benchmark. Brent Rau in a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse powered by a Canadian-built Magnus Motorsports 4-banger is considered to hold the current record at 6.83@202 mph. Although Rau's time differs depending on where you look, this Ecotec-powered runner beats it by eight-hundreths of a second. There's also a dragster with a Volkswagen engine that's supposedly done 6.53, but it's got a top-fuel-style body, which is a different class altogether.
EDIT: Then there is also Don Nase Jr. in his 4-cylinder rail car who ran 6.42 @ 207 mph as one of our readers pointed out.
