On the heels of its well-received Boxster drop-top, Porsche rolled out its all-new third-generation Cayman coupe at the Los Angeles Auto Show today.

Anyone who is familiar with automaker's new mid-engine Boxster (it debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show) knows all they need to know about the Cayman. It is, in Porsche's own words, lower and longer, lighter and faster, more efficient and more powerful than ever. The standard Cayman model arrives with a 2.7-litre flat-six Boxer engine rated at 275 horsepower, while the premium Cayman S is fitted with a 3.4-litre six generating 325 horsepower. A six-speed manual is the standard gearbox, while the automakers seven-speed dual-clutch PDK automated gearbox is optional. In performance configuration (PDK with Sport Chrono), the Cayman will run to 96 kilometres per hour (60 miles per hour) in 5.1 seconds and the Cayman S will do it in 4.4 seconds.

Acceleration is only part of the story, as the mid-engine coupe is wider and riding on a longer wheelbase than its predecessor – with a low center of gravity and optimal balance, it should take to a slalom like an Olympic skier.

Porsche says the new Cayman will arrive in Spring 2013. Base price of the Cayman is US$52,600, with the Cayman S starting at US$63,800. Canadian pricing to follow.

Press Release:

Los Angeles. Porsche is celebrating the world premiere of the new Cayman at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. The third generation of the Cayman, which is making its appearance before an international audience at the LA Convention Center, has been re-engineered from the ground up - it is lower and longer, lighter and faster, more efficient and more powerful than ever. The two-seat sport coupé will be launched on the market in two versions: Cayman and Cayman S. A longer wheelbase, wider track and larger wheels enhance the driving performance of the mid-engine sports car to a level without equal in its competitive class.

Delivering more power with even better fuel economy than before, any of two highly efficient flat-six cylinder engines is mounted just in front of the rear axle, surrounded by its lightweight aluminium and steel body. The Cayman is powered by a 2.7-liter engine with 275 hp; with the Sport Chrono package it accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. The 3.4-liter engine in the Cayman S produces 325 hp; with PDK and the Sport Chrono package it sprints from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

The new Cayman will arrive dealerships in Spring 2013 starting at $52,600 for the Cayman and $63,800 for the Cayman S, not including a destination charge of $950.

IF the Canadian prices have the same bogus inflated price tag that they do now even though our money is at par with the United States i'm going to boycott this car which is sad because (A) - I can finally afford a $60k sports car and (B) I've looked forward to owning a Porsche and don't need / want a convertible and cant afford a 911 so it's Boxster or nothing.

Dear. Porsche Canada - please come out with fair pricing on the Boxster and you've earned yourself a future sale, my respect, and admiration. Charge an additional $10,000 over an identical car from our neighbor to the south and I will vilify as you deserve to be. Don't be greedy - don't gouge Porsche fans north of the border.
