In an attempt to stand out from the numerous useless retailer apps currently on the market, Canadian Tire has just launched a new iPad app aimed directly at drivers from gearheads to general commuters across the country.
Aside from the typical online catalogue, flyers and store locator, the new app can link to your calendars and allows you to schedule your car's routine maintenance. It also lets you load up to 5 cars in your "virtual garage" for easy (and hopefully) accurate searching through their extensive parts catalogue.
Not sure if those chrome "spinner" hub caps will fit both your Minivan and your '97 Neon? Don't worry! There's now an app for that. You can even load in images of your baby to give the app a more personal touch. All kidding aside, it's nice to see a Canadian big-box retailer putting a bit of effort into doing something different even if it's a bit rudimentary.
We can't help but wonder how much further the guys at Canadian Tire will eventually push this whole "growing number of digital tools" they are providing to their customers. It's all harmless until they try and develop some sort of at-home diagnostic aid for the back-yard mechanic. Have a look at the appropriately fluffy promo video for the app's Garage feature below.

Canadian Tire Announcing Enhanced iPad app
TORONTO, January 10, 2013 – Helping drivers kick off a new year on the right foot, Canadian Tire is announcing enhanced iPad app features designed to make shopping a breeze for auto enthusiasts. The Garage feature is now more robust for iPad users including the Auto Service Reminder tool which integrates the Canadian Tire app with customer's iPad calendars to set convenient auto service reminders. As well, the app now also allows customers to personalize their experience by adding an image of each of the vehicles in their virtual garage.
The Auto Parts Selector tool, available for Apple and Android devices, is one of the first of its kind in the Canadian app marketplace. Using this tool, customers can add the exact vehicle make and model information for up to five vehicles to the app to quickly find compatible parts for their car, as well as product information (including videos where available), product availability and current pricing. The Sale Alert function sends notifications to customers when products highlighted on their shopping list goes on sale.
"As we continue to establish ourselves as Canada's automotive authority, we are constantly innovating to make it easier for drivers to keep their cars on the road," said Rosie Riolino-Serpa, Associate Vice President, Digital at Canadian Tire. "As part of the growing number of digital tools we offer our customers, the enhanced Canadian Tire iPad app is an other way we are augmenting the automotive retail experience."
In addition to the above, the new iPad app also offers convenient features which are already available with the Canadian Tire mobile app for iPhone®, BlackBerry® or Android™:
- View the Canadian Tire weekly flyer, including early flyer access each week and an enhanced digital experience with the ability to zoom in on images and hotspots for product details
- Store locator helps customers find the nearest Canadian Tire store based on their current location

- Barcode scanning allows users instant access to product information
