Don't bring a knife to a gun fight, and don't bring a Chevy or a Ford to a tow-off - that's the message Ram is roaring out the wide tail-pipes of their new 2013 Ram 3500 heavy-duty. The new super-rig is on display at the 2013 Toronto Auto Show, and if you're on the show floor, it's worth a look-see.
It's rare that we stand in awe of a performance spec sheet - but this is one such time. Ram has dropped the gloves and mounted an all-out assault on the heavy-duty pickup truck segment. The 2013 Ram 3500's single most impressive figure is its Gross Combined Weight Rating of 17,055 kg (37,600 lbs). That means the new heavy-duty Ram can tow/carry eight Ford F150s or an octet of Chevy Silverados with one parked in the box... in case you were wondering.
Providing motivation is an upgraded 6.7-litre Cummins Turbo Diesel engine with a best-in-class 850 lb-ft of torque at the ready. That much twist would shred most drivelines, but Ram has upgraded the truck's entire chassis and drivetrain starting with a beefed up high-strength steel frame, stronger transfer case, and a higher-load transmission.

The Ram 3500 sports a maximum trailer weight of 13,607 kilograms (30,000 pounds). That's 13.6 metric tonnes (15 tons), or the equivalent of a dozen Mazda MX-5 Miata convertibles stacked on a trailer - in case you've grown tired of pulling competitors' pickups.
But since we're on the topic of competitors, it's worth noting that the Ram 3500 can tow 3,130 kg (6,900 pounds) more than its nearest competitor, the Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD.
The 2013 Ram 3500 starts with a base price of $54,420 in SLT trim, and the price quickly swells to $75,000+ once you start piling on the options and trim levels.
The rig shown in our gallery is a Ram 3500 Laramie Long Horn edition, and after taking pause in the driver's seat, we must admit that there are many sides to this truck's personality. Besides a big-rig wanna-be, it's also a very refined vehicle with a beautifully appointed interior and rich leather seating.
