Imagine you're cruising around the countryside in your topless Ferrari 458 Italia when all of a sudden you see and hear this McLaren P1 prototype roll past. What do you do? Continue on your merry way, or do you give chase? As with all of us in the room, this lucky onlooker busted out his camera and went in for a closer look.
Coming on the coattails of the official powertrain details press release seen here announcing that the P1 will be a hybrid platform pushing roughly 903 hp, this lengthy video turned up of the mighty P1 roaming local roads near the McLaren Technology Centre near Woking UK. Sadly we don't get to hear much in the way of engine noise during the drive, and when we do it's a bit tricky to separate from the throaty Ferrari's V8. It almost makes you feel sorry for the engineers who have to suffer through busy traffic rather than putting the P1 through its paces.
This real-world test mule doesn't look quite as show-ready as the anticipated production version set to appear next month in Geneva, however it's quite likely the engineering team is working out a few final kinks before production mode gets rolling. One way or another we are more excited than ever to see what this thing will be like once all is said and done.
