Winter may have been a bit of a bust here in Southern Ontario this year, at least as far as snowfall goes, but other parts of the continent have not gotten off so lightly. As Winter tire advocates for years, we are always the first to point out that cold temperatures and icy roads pose as much of a challenge to all season tires as the deep, white stuff does.

Despite the fact that Winter driver training options abound, some drivers continue to be caught out by the challenges of the season. In Quebec, and a couple of other provinces, the use of snow tires is mandatory during the Winter months. Sadly, other provinces like Ontario still don't require their use.

For years, Michelin's X-Ice lineup has been the cream of the crop of Winter boots. For the 2012 season, Michelin launched the X-Ice 3, the latest addition to their stable of snow season tires. To get the word out about, Michelin brought us to the incredible Mecaglisse winter driving facility in rural Quebec.
Continue reading Storming the ice with Michelin X-ice 3 [w/video]

Filed under: Canada, Videos, Safety, Winter Driving, Track Tested

Storming the ice with Michelin X-ice 3 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 12:32:00 EST.
Many of our readers likely weren't even born when the Honda RA 272 won the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix at the hands of American racer, Richie Ginther. The success went on to become the inspiration for the Pete Aron / Yamura storyline in the classic movie Grand Prix. We're comfortable in betting that most of you have seen that one.

Honda obviously has a rich racing history, of which the company is rightfully proud. Recently, they invited Indycar veteran Dario Franchitti to Motegi to drive the RA 272 as part of a feature for print mag Road & Track. Fortunately for the rest of us, they were able to grab some video of the Scott in action with the incredible machine.

Check out the video after the jump and head over to R & T to read Dario's account, along with some stunning images from John Lamm.
Continue reading Dario Franchitti drives 1962 Honda RA 272

Filed under: Honda, Videos, Motor sports, Racing

Dario Franchitti drives 1962 Honda RA 272 originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 16:14:00 EST.
Every now and then, even a seasoned racer needs to get out and have a bit of fun with his hometown peeps. At 25, James Hinchcliffe is surprisingly seasoned, having started racing karts at 9 years old. Hinch also knows that the hometown love is the best place to build the brand, so when he announced the first ever Hinchtown Media Challenge, Toronto's GP Kartways was the obvious choice.

When we received the invite here in the Autoblog Canada offices, the reality hit that we didn't stand a chance with yours truly behind the wheel of a kart. Something to do with a power to weight ratio problem. Instead, we decided to bring along a bit of a ringer in my 18 year old daughter, Shelby, who has proven herself to be quicker than her old man on the track. She did our team proud.

Beyond the obvious photo ops, there was precious little in the way of idle media chatter, as Hinch just wanted to get into Danica's old uniform, get out and race, as did everyone else.

Not to be outdone by Brad Keselowski, who was live tweeting from the car when the Daytona 500 was red flagged, Hinchcliffe took to tweeting live during the <strike>slower</strike> less experienced group.

Anyone can tweet under a red flag, this is tweeting under green! Impressed, @keselowski?!

Team Autoblog Canada qualified on the second row of the faster group, behind experienced racers Brian Makse and Nick Jameson. Just to make things a little more interesting, the Mayor of Hinchtown started at the back of the field. He wouldn't stay there long. The pack made it to turn 2, when someone punted our girl and she spun to the back of the field. Like Hinch, she wouldn't stay there long.

Jameson, who had raced karts with Hinch in their teenage years had good speed and some lucky breaks in traffic, allowing him to stay at the front and take the win. The real excitement though was the battle for third spot, as Hinch, Makse and Grant traded paint for lap after lap. When the checker flew, James took third with Shelby and Brian following up.

We'll take a fourth place finish any day when 3rd is the Mayor of Indycar!
Filed under: Canada, Motor sports, Racing

Hinchtown Media Challenge complete with Tweets under green originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 10:31:00 EST. We all love a bit of calamity every now and then, it just brightens our day to have a giggle at someone else's misfortunes. It isn't very often though that we get to see two buffoons in action on the same video.

Gamers of all ages love the Mario Kart video game franchise, as Nintendo's little pizza guy drives all over in his fanciful kart complete with a para-sail to help with those pesky cliffs. Last year, the folks at Nintendo partnered with West Coast Customs to create a pair of life size karts, one for Mario and the other for his brother Luigi.

Created as part of a marketing campaign for the launch of Mario Kart 7, Mario's machine was destined to go to one lucky gamer's garage. Clarksville, Tennessee resident, Nate Stehley won the monthly Epic Reward Giveaway, which has landed the kart, complete with glider wing, in his driveway.

Luigi's Bumble V Kart remains on display in Nintendo's Redmond, Washington headquarters.

Head past the jump to see a video of Stehley's new toy being delivered.
Continue reading Lucky gamer wins life sized Mario Kart

Filed under: Videos, Toys, Video Games

Lucky gamer wins life sized Mario Kart originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 29 Feb 2012 10:01:00 EST.
Last week we reported that Ken Block and Alex Gelsemino had been getting some practice in hopes of taking their sixth win at the 100 Acre Wood Rally. That extra stage time must have helped, as the Monster World Rally Team did manage to pick up their sixth win at the rally in Pooh Bear's woods.

Not that Block had it easy mind you, as Subaru driver and reigning Rally America champion, David Higgins was hot on his heels at the ultra fast rally in the Ozarks. The Brit took second spot on the podium, followed by Polish rally champion Krzyszof Holowczyc in a Mitsubishi EVO.

Usually fast, the Canadians in the field did not fare so well this year. Winners of the 2011 100 Acre Wood Rally, Antoine L'Estage & Nathalie Richard had a rare transmission failure on stage 4 in their Rockstar Energy EVO X.

Crazy Leo Urlichich, who flew the Autoblog Canada colours at last year's Tall Pines Rally, did his best Villeneuve impression after blowing a tire early on during day one's stages. Even on 3 wheels, Urlichich was faster than most of the field and wowed the fans by getting massive air on the jumps. Day 2 ended when another blown tire damaged the front suspension of the Subaru. When the tie rod failed, Crazy Leo and his co-driver Carl Williamson went for a ride in a massive crash.
We've got lots of images from the rally, including Crazy Leo on three wheels, in the gallery above. Head past the break where we've got a wrap up video and the full rally press release.
Continue reading Ken Block wins 6th 100 Acre Wood Rally while Canadians struggle [with video]

Filed under: Ford, Videos, Motor sports, Racing

Ken Block wins 6th 100 Acre Wood Rally while Canadians struggle [with video] originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 11:32:00 EST. Like any exotic, it isn't too often that we see even two Nissan GT-Rs on the road at the same time. Maybe if we are covering an event at a race track, we might see a couple of them in a day. The likelihood of us ever seeing 40 or more of them on a cruise day here in Canada is slim to none. In Singapore however, the modern day Godzilla would appear to be a little more common.

Youtube user Maxon Goh tagged along with the Singapore & Malaysia Nissan GTR Owner's Clubs recently when they took a gaggle of 40 or more of the beasts on a road trip. The group ran their rides from the Pan Pacific Hotel in Singapore to Dempsey Hill, a former British military base that has been converted to a lifestyle resort.

Back in the late Sixties, car makers began installing seat belts in cars. A decade or so later, 1976 to be exact, seat belt use became mandatory in Canada. Here we are approaching 40 years on and there are still people who don't wear their seat belts. Human nature is difficult to change.

As cell phone use has increased over the past decade to the point where everyone and their children has a mobile phone, just about every driver has taken a call behind the wheel, taking their attention away from the road. Governments and police forces have tried hard to get the message out that distracted driving causes collisions. Despite marketing initiatives and enforcement blitzes though, humans like convenience and the lure of the phone call is just too tough for many drivers to ignore.

A recent survey by the Ottawa based, Traffic Injury Research Foundation shows that over a third of Canadian drivers are still using their cell phone on the road. The survey, which polled 1,208 drivers revealed that 36 per cent of drivers had used their phone while driving within the past week.

Compare that to a similar survey in 2001, where 20.5 per cent of respondents admitted to using their phone while driving. TIRF suggests that the proliferation of inexpensive cell phones and plans as part of the explanation for the increase. On the bright side, TIRF notes that the length of time spent on the phone each week has dropped from 30 minutes to 10. A small consolation when that many more drivers are using them each day.

Sportscars have been a thriving cottage industry in the UK for decades. The most active player in past years has been Caterham, the company spawned by Lotus decision to stop producing their popular 7 model way back in 1973. Things came full circle when the company was purchased by Team Lotus in 2010. Over the past months, there has been a flurry of news from the Surrey based car maker as they prepare to take over the World of motor racing. Caterham will be going karting, developing a new sportscar and launching a new F1 car and planning an assault on production based car racing series around the globe. There are even rumours floating around of a third sports car product in the works.

Dubbed the SP/300 R, the most we've seen of the low slung racer have been drawings that indicate it will be similar in nature to a Radical. Late last week, the folks at Radical Sportscars let out a teaser video of their new closed roof racer in action. Not to be outdone, Caterham has post a video of the SP/300 R in action on Youtube. The action is pretty limited, but detail junkies will get all hot and bothered by some of the stunning up close HD video of the beast with its clothes off.

Honda Canada has released a product recall that affects 186 2012 Honda Pilot and 385 2012 Acura MDX models in Canada.

The recall involved an emissions control device inside the fuel tank called a Vent Shut Float or VSF for short. The VSF is part of the vapour recovery system that prevents gasoline vapours from escaping from the fuel system into the atmosphere.

In some cases the the VDF can become dislodged from its mounting point which can prevent fuel from being added to the tank or cause a leak, increasing the risk of fire. There have been no reported cases of leakage or fire.

With the recent spate of crazy dash cam videos coming out of the former Soviet Union lately, one might be led to believe that Eurasia has no driving instructors. Fortunately, one would be wrong.

The folks at Extrim Drive in Cherkizovski, Moscow operates a wide range of driving lessons for every driver from the first timer to track dogs. Just to show how good they can make their students, Extrim Drive has taken dance lessons and made their way to a local ice rink.
The latest couple of videos to come from the brand chief at DC Shoes may have been a tiny bit humourous and showed off some dirty bits, but they have been short on the type of excitement that has made Ken Block a household name in households that don't particularly care about motorsports. Today's release brings the Focus back onto hooning the Fiesta.

The 100 Acre Wood might be home to a certain honey sucking bear in the nursery, in the performance rally world it is the kingdom of a Californian named Ken Block. The new media world goes crazy each time Block releases a new edition of his viral Gymkhana series, but there is a more serious side to his driving. Block has won the event in the foothills of the Ozarks 5 out of the past 6 years. That missing year was 2011, when Canadians Antoine L'Estage and Nathalie Richard stole the crown from the Ford driver and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino.
There is no doubt that Block wants to steal the crown back from the Mitsubishi team, as the video of him practicing at the nearby Sayers Brook Bison Ranch after the jump will attest.
Continue reading Ken Block gunning for 6th win at 100 Acre Wood

Filed under: Hatchback, Ford, Videos, Motor sports, Racing

Ken Block gunning for 6th win at 100 Acre Wood originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 18:29:00 EST.
While getting ready to wrap up our day here in the Autoblog Canada offices, we stumbled across this gem of a video that is guaranteed to make even the most jaded of car fans green with exhaust envy!

Based in The Netherlands, Youtube user Jorrie2 began shooting auto porn with his camera at just 14 years of age. A few years on, he got his hands on a video camera and began making moving pictures thanks to a chance encounter with a Lambo. These days, at the ripe old age of 20, Jorrick (his real name) has graduated to a "real" camera and has the opportunity to shoot real supercar porn. No slouch in the quantity department either, as Jorrick has just filmed his 600th video!

The gathering you will see in the video above defies description. 53 exotics blasting through a pair of tunnels as they leave a rest stop at a group drive. It may be hard to believe, but lesser Ferrari and Porsche models seem almost pedestrian when followed by a Porsche GT, a Ferrari FF, a Jaguar XKR and an evil sounding Diablo.

Hit the jump to immerse yourself in the spine chilling sounds. Perfect for waking up the office at the end of the day!
Continue reading Experience 53 exotic cars blasting through a tunnel

Experience 53 exotic cars blasting through a tunnel originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 17:31:00 EST.
For many enthusiasts, a visit to an auto show is a chance to glimpse the cars of the future, sit in the cars of today and drool over the exotics that gearheads lust for. Some of us are just hoping for a taste of some special cars from the past. This guy has been labeled old school (I prefer old skool) by the rest of the team here at Autoblog Canada, so I fall in to the latter category.

Fortunately for us old school types, the organizers at the Toronto Auto Show also have a soft spot for the past and have reserved part of the 700 level at the annual show as their Classic Concours every year.

For the 2012 show, the Toronto Triumph Club has brought together an incredible collection of vehicles from the classic marque. Not surprisingly, mainstream road going models like the TR-6, TR-7 and Spitfire are plentiful in the display. Some of the more unusual machines on hand range from vintage racing cars to what would have been considered a bit more pedestrian back in the day.

There are a number of Standard Ten's and a really cool delivery van. Rarely seen in Canada is a lovely 1935 Triumph Gloria Southern Cross. How many new school car fans have ever seen a TR-8 race car, complete with massive slick tires?

The Toronto Auto Show continues at the Metro Convention Centre until this Sunday. Make sure to stop in to check out the Classic Concours while you are there. On your way to the show, check out our incredible Autoblog Canada art install in the Skywalk from Union Station.
Filed under: Classics, Canada, Toronto Auto Show

Classic Triumph display a highlight of Toronto Auto Show originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 12:29:00 EST. Officers from the Wood Buffalo RCMP detachment in Fort McMurray, Alberta, have laid criminal charges against a 21 year old man for driving at 120 km/h over the posted limit.

21 year old Garnet Bresson was observed travelling on Confederation Way, where the speed limit is 60 km/h, at a speed of 180 km/h. Bresson was driving a sedan with three passengers on a snow covered road. The man was arrested and charged with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and received a 24 hour suspension of his license for being under the influence of alcohol.

RCMP spokesperson Christina Wilkins adds:

There were no reported injuries as a result of this incident, however this type of behaviour behind the wheel can quickly lead to serious collisions, often resulting in irreparable damage. RCMP are reminding motorists to slow down, and drive to the road conditions. Posted speed limits are set as a maximum when the road and weather conditions are ideal.

Motorists caught driving at 50 km/h over the posted limit in Alberta receive six demerit points and a mandatory court appearance.

Let's face it, despite a few quips when he was signed to drive the Go Daddy Indycar, James Hinchcliffe was not hired by the domain seller because of his bikini bod. More than any other Indycar pilot, the Mayor of Hinchtown has built a brand around himself that fits the Go Daddy brand.

Hinch has already been doing some video work for Indycar leading up to the 2012 season and now we get our first glimpse of him in action for Go Daddy. Unlike the sexy, polished stuff Go Daddy has done in the past with Danica, this spot is more like Wayne's World. Kinda refreshing after the stuck up princess stuff.

Put a windy, mountainous road near a city and you will have an unofficial race track. Put an epic road near a huge centre of car culture like LA and that track will become legendary. Of course LA has an equally healthy motorcycle culture and riders need a place to play just as much as us car guys. That place is Mulholland Drive.

Over the years, more than a few riders have bitten off more of Mulholland than they can chew and another one bit the dust last weekend. A guy named Mickey on a Suzuki GSX-R came into a tight right a bit too hot. He got sideways under braking and does a full flip over the guard rail. Fortunately Mickey's pride was injured more than anything else. We've got views from two angles after the jump. First up is a roadside view, followed by a Go-Pro view from the KTM rider who was next on the road.
Continue reading Gixxer rider flips out on Mulholland Drive

Filed under: Suzuki, Videos, Safety, Motorcycle, Performance

Gixxer rider flips out on Mulholland Drive originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 13:05:00 EST. Warsaw, Ontario resident Ben Ferrill has a stalker, and there is nothing Ontario Provincial Police can do to help him.

"I was doing just a regular inspection on my truck and I found this black box under my truck ... with flashing lights inside," Ben Ferrill of Warsaw, Ont., told Go Public. "I didn't know what it was. I didn't know if it was a bomb. We were scared to death ... It felt like a movie - unreal."

The man is obviously distraught, living in fear of who might be following him and what their intention may be. All Ferrill & his lawyer have to go on is suspicion, but the back story could point to an answer.

Ferrill was a mechanic at Holiday Ford in Peterborough, when he injured his shoulder at work and went on disability leave. On his return to work, he was fired for allegedly stealing a jug of windshield washer fluid. A W.S.I.B. investigation found that the mechanic had been fired because of his injury and are pursuing legal action. Likewise, Ferrill has filed a wrongful dismissal suit against the dealership. In the video after the jump, it can be seen that Ferrill owns a landscaping company. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch for dealership staff to be convinced that the man's injuries were overstated.

GPS tracking units are routinely used by fleet companies to keep tabs on their vehicles, or to locate them in the event of a theft. This particular unit was activated by a Toronto based company acting as an agent for a US company. Kore Wireless simply activated the unit for use in Canada, but the device was sold by U.S. Fleet Tracking who has a strict policy against revealing their client's information. They go so far as to post the following on their website:
Not surprisingly, this means that Canadian officials stand no chance of obtaining any information about who placed this unit on Ferrill's truck or who bought the unit. The OPP have closed their investigation.

What do you think? Was Ferrill's previous employer keeping tabs on his movements? When Ken Block and the Monster World Rally Team revealed the new team livery and schedule last week, the focus was more about making fun of Block and less about the Fiesta. Part 2 of the reveal has been launched today and they have appropriately named it Car Porn.

In the video after the jump, we get to see both of the #43 Fiestas that Block will thrash over the coming year.

"We made this second video for all of the fans who really enjoy seeing the up-close bits of racecars," said Block. "All of the 'naughty stuff' and details you normally wouldn't get access to as a fan are highlighted in this video, so as a team we started to refer to it as 'car porn' and the name sort of stuck. My old friend and fellow DC athlete, skateboarder Steve Berra, came out and did this one for us and he's brilliant behind the camera and has an amazing eye for this style of clip. We talked about how we wanted it to be 'car porn' and he took that and ran with it. The results speak for themselves, the video looks awesome and really gives the viewer an inside view of the car, they would otherwise never get to see."

Under the lights are Block's Hybrid Function Hoon Vehicle Ford Fiesta, alternatively known as the H.F.H.V. and the Gymkhana World Tour Ford Fiesta. Berra takes his camera deep into the pair of little Fords, showing us all the dirty bits. Adding to the fun is a teaser that Gymkhana Five will be coming out this Summer!
We've all seen him, that guy that just has to get past all other traffic, regardless of the road conditions. Unfortunately we don't often get to see karma catch up with him. Thanks to yet another dash cam, we have a video to make you smile on this holiday Monday.

Driving what appears to be an older Hyundai Accent sedan, this guy just had to get where he was going faster than everyone else. Thanks to his lack of patience and a complete lack of skills, his final destination isn't where he was expecting to be.
