2013 Audi S5 Coupe ready to make a dent in Canadian market

Posted Apr 8th 2012 4:00PM

The recent Vancouver International Auto Show played centre stage to Audi Canada for the reveal of its updated Audi S5 Coupe to eager media and potential buyers.

The popular two-door hardtop has been given a relatively significant refresh for 2013, with many of the same changes that the more comfort-oriented A5 Coupe received earlier this year.

Specific to the S5, a revised hexagonal single-frame grille with a platinum-gray insert and horizontal chrome struts is bookended by new sharply creased wedge-shaped headlight clusters, for a look that when combined with its revised front fascia, featuring air inlets featuring a new honeycomb grille pattern and dual chrome garnish surrounding new angular fog lights, shows a clear progression over the outgoing model. Moving past the new aluminum-look exterior mirror housings, a revised rear fascia incorporates a diffuser with an aluminum-look blade and dual-branch exhaust system finished off with four elliptical tailpipes joins updated LED taillights, while new exclusive crystal-effect colours include Estoril Blue and Prism Silver.

Read on for all the updates to this upscale coupe from Audi.

Vancouver Auto Show 2012 gallery includes some impressive reveals

Posted Apr 4th 2012 3:00PM

The 92nd annual Vancouver International Auto Show got underway yesterday with a surprising number of all-new introductions. BMW gave us the exclusive North American reveal of its 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, while arch rival Audi chose the Terminal City to stage its refreshed 2013 S5. The revised 2013 Smart ForTwo made its Canadian debut in Vancouver too, while a special Canadian debut came all the way from Tinseltown.

Fans of the Transformers movie series will no doubt fall for the Corvette Stingray Concept, dubbed "Sideswipe" for its appearance in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. GM was more interested in highlighting its all-new Cadillac ATS and ZTS, however, the former its new entry-level sedan and the latter its new top-line full-size offering.

Western Canadian introductions included the 2013 Dodge Dart compact sedan, which should help Chrysler maintain its title of best-selling automaker in Canada, while the 2013 VW Jetta Hybrid expands the popular sedan's powertrain range. VW enthusiasts will no doubt lust after the new 2013 VW Golf R, a hot hatch with a tweaked 256-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder, a 6-speed manual (only) and all-wheel drive.

Additionally, the Vancouver media day saw 13 regional reveals, some of which included the new Mini Roadster, 2013 Audi A4 Allroad, all-new 2013 Chevrolet Spark, 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, 2013 Mercedes B Class, 2012 Mercedes SL Class, 2013 Smart Fortwo electric drive (claimed by parent Mercedes-Benz to be a Smart car that's fun to drive), 2012 Toyota Prius C (the least expensive hybrid on the market at $20,950), 2013 Scion FR-S (no doubt a tuner car favourite of this decade), and a very unique one-off 2012 Kia Sorento Vancouver Whitecaps Special Edition that included a special appearance by Vancouver's very own soccer superstar Bobby Lenarduzzi.

Check out these cars along with many others in our extensive Vancouver International Auto Show photo gallery or better yet, head to the show at BC Place.

BMW 6-series Gran Coupe revealed at Vancouver Auto Show 2012

Posted Apr 4th 2012 10:00AM

It's not very often that the "Village of Vancouver" directly upstages New York City. However, today one of the more important new luxury car launches of 2012 happened at the Vancouver International Auto Show, a single day before the car would be launched south of the border in the borough of Manhattan at the New York Auto Show.

BMW Canada got the scoop on its larger brother this year, with the debut of the much anticipated 6 Series Gran Coupe, a late entry into the relatively new four-door coupe segment, but one that appears well worth waiting for.

The new sedan, er Gran Coupe will arrive in dealerships during the third quarter of 2012 as a 2013 model and fetch an approximate CAD$10,000 premium over the current two-door 6 Series Coupe (which starts at a hair over CAD$101,000), said a BMW Canada executive at a gathering after the show. Although expected in dealerships as early as June, only U.S. pricing has already been solidified at US$76,895 including destination charges, prices on the V8 models have now been set as well. The 650i will sell for US$87,395, while the 650i xDrive model will command US$90,395.

The price premium will be due to a more powerful base engine, the first iteration to be in 650i xDrive Gran Coupe trim instead of the 640i that was on display (BMW says the 640i will come later), and will boast more standard features, such as the BMW Individual interior shown at the launch.

But we have more details after the jump on this new BMW.

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe amongst surprises at Vancouver Auto Show

Posted Apr 2nd 2012 8:00PM

Being the final major auto show of the season here in Canada, the Vancouver International Auto Show can sometimes offer up a surprise or two.

Along with all the major brands showing off new vehicles previously revealed in Montreal, Toronto, or at a show overseas, such as Geneva, Tokyo, or even LA, Detroit, or Chicago (New York is too close to the Vancouver show this year so Vancouver show-goers won't likely see the new Chevy Impala, Lexus ES, or any of the other cars expected to debut there ... although simultaneous reveals have occurred before), the 92nd annual Vancouver event brings a rare North American debut and an especially sweet moviestar car from Hollywood.

BMW has chosen Vancouver, one of its hottest markets, for the North American unveiling of its all-new 6 Series Gran Coupe, a cross between its popular 5 Series sedan and sporty 6 Series two-door Coupe. The 6 Series Gran Coupe was first shown only weeks ago in Geneva. But that is only a taste of what else is in store at BC Place.

Click for more highlights planned for the Vancouver Auto Show, which kicks off tomorrow at noon.
