Filed under: Luxury, Convertible, Aftermarket, Cadillac, Design/Style, Performance

We try very, very hard to keep snark away from creations like the one you see here. After all, someone poured plenty of enthusiasm, time and money into turning a 2008 Cadillac XLR into a modern interpretation of the new-old cars typically done by cottage builders like Excalibur and Clénet. Even so, it's hard not to wince when you set an eye on this machine. With its wheelbase stretched to accommodate the extra bodywork, goofy sidewalls and upkicked nose (examine it in profile, it looks slightly bent in the middle), this "neoclassic" takes whatever was loveable about the discontinued Cadillac roadster underneath and buries it in a tacky grave.

Miraculously, the engine bay has been left unmolested, which means the retractable hardtop convertible still features a 4.6-litre Northstar V8 engine good for 320 horsepower. If only that were enough to outrun its shame. If, for some reason, you feel like taking this thing home, Harry Kaufmann Motorcars of Milwaukee says it can be yours for a paltry US$74,998. We wish we were joking. Click here to check it out for yourself in our photo gallery.

The brand-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is vastly improved compared to the outgoing model. And now that The General's pickup trucks have been squared away, it's time to focus our attention onto their passenger-friendly companions, the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon (above).

Our spy photographers have passed along a huge smattering of photos (and a video), showing the new SUVs out testing. Both the short- and long-wheelbase models were spied, and while the overall shape of the vehicles hasn't changed all that much, we expect the updates to be substantial. In addition to new powertrain options, like GM's new small-block V8, we expect the interiors of both SUVs to get massive makeovers, providing better materials throughout their cabins and quieter, more refined environments. We even hear that some trick new suspension developments may be in store for upper-end models.

Visually, these spy shots allow us to see a couple of new details on the SUVs' front and rear fascias, including LED running lamps on the Yukon and some interesting LED taillamp treatments. Of course, the obvious third party missing from this set of photos is the Cadillac Escalade, as it's reported that GM is working to further differentiate the 'Slade from the rest of the fullsize SUV lineup, and is working to make the new model "much less ostentatious."

Have a look at dozens of spy shots in our galleries above and below, and scroll down to see a video of one of the prototypes out on the road.

General Motors has made it official: The twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre V6 announced for the 2014 Cadillac CTS will also join the options list for the 2014 Cadillac XTS. The LF3 engine puts out 410 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque in the XTS, however, which is 10 hp and 61 lb-ft down from its application in the CTS. It will be identifiable from the outside by a specific grille treatment and a badge on the decklid. The 3.6-litre V6 with 304 hp and 264 lb-ft holds steady as the standard engine, and both will be yoked to a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Also new for the front-wheel drive model for 2014 are updates that include electric power steering and optional Automatic Parking Assist that can maneuver the sedan into parallel parking spots. The three trims above standard - Luxury, Premium and Platinum - get Intellibeam headlights that automatically switch between high- and low-beam,

The four current trim levels remain but the list of optional extras for the higher specs grows with a rear-seat entertainment system equipped with DVD screens in the front seatbacks, memory settings for the front passenger seat and an armrest in the back seat fitted with radio and sunshade controls. The press release below has more info on all of the changes.

Sure lots of us have silly stories that are prompted by being both young and stupid. During the teen years, the hormones are raging and tend to make most of decisions for us. While most of us make it out unscathed, there are some teenagers out there with questionable judgement. A teen in BC is one such troubled kid who took the family car out on a mission, at 175 km/h.

Abbotsford area RCMP intercepted a Cadillac speeding along Highway 1 near Bradner Road, clocked doing 75 km/h over the posted limit. When the performed the traffic stop, they found out the driver was only 15 years-old and obviously had no licence, no insurance and no good reason for his dangerous driving actions. He claimed he was coming back from meeting a girl and wanted to get his Dad's 2008 Cadillac CTS back in the driveway before they woke up. At 2:00 in the morning, officers weren't buying the story and no leniency was given.

The unlicensed driver was slapped with a $759 fine and as for the Cadillac, his parents will be getting it back... in a week. The vehicle was subject to roadside seizure and he'll have some explaining to do to Mom 'n' Dad. And yes this is the very same highway, another driver recently had his vehicle seized for speeding, two days after his licence suspension was lifted!

Remember when the Cadillac CTS Coupe debuted, and we were all like, "Oh hello there?" Well, don't expect the same thing to happen when the new ATS Coupe is unveiled - these brand new (overexposed) spy shots show a two-door that's decidedly more sedate than the angular yet curvaceous and all-around good-looking CTS Coupe. This isn't to say that the smaller Caddy Coupe won't be attractive - the four-door version is plenty pretty, to be sure - it just likely won't have that extra somethin'-somethin' to truly set it apart from the sedan.

Fine, then. We don't doubt that the two-door ATS will be just as enjoyable to drive as its sedan sibling, with a lot of the mechanical stuff likely carrying over unchanged. That includes the powertrain options, meaning buyers will be able to choose from the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre inline-four, turbocharged 2.0-litre four, or larger free-breathing 3.6-litre V6.

Look for the 2014 ATS Coupe to enter production in January of next year, meaning a reveal later this year (LA Auto Show, perhaps?) would be in order.

Despite some hiccups, China remains the auto industry's great hope for new vehicle sales, with significant sales gains and a huge upside. Nowhere is that hope more fervent than at General Motors, which offers eight different marques in the Asian nation. China has been GM's single biggest market the last three years running, and is unlikely to give up that title anytime soon. Yet its premiere brand, Cadillac, has remained essentially stagnant, selling just 30,000 units in China last year. That's in a segment where sales of luxury vehicles has outpaced that of the larger Chinese market. So what gives?

According to Cadillac officials Autoblog spoke with in China this week at the Shanghai Motor Show, it's been a problem of product - they haven't had the right ones. Displacement taxation issues, import tariffs and currency fluctuations have all conspired to make the brand's products less appealing than they might otherwise have been. But GM is stepping on the gas with Cadillac, and executives are eyeballing 100,000 sales by 2016 - more than triple the Wreath and Crest's current volume. And the expectations for the brand only get more ambitious from there - they're shooting for 10 per cent of the luxury market by 2020. Bob Socia, President of GM China, promises that there will be a new Caddy launched in the market each year from now through 2016 and most will be built in China. Characterizing the company's efforts to revive the brand's fortunes as a "relaunch" of sorts, the brand also figures to gain dealers as GM expands its sales outlet footprint westward.

New products like a made-in-China XTS sedan (with a market-specific 2.0-litre four-cylinder to avoid heavy displacement taxes) will help, and Socia hinted that the ATS sport sedan could be next in line for in-country production. The SRX crossover - currently the brand's best-selling model in China - will also likely get a long look for future local production with the next-generation model is introduced. In the meantime, Cadillac unveiled the Escalade ESV Hybrid (shown above) as its latest model addition to capitalize on the market's white-hot luxury SUV segment.

In addition to new products, GM China is also investing in developing market-specific technology at its facilities in Shanghai. Much of that will come in the form of apps for its infotainment systems like Cadillac's CUE, including connectivity for popular social media utilities like Weibo, which executives described as China's Twitter.
Continue reading Cadillac still planning for big things in China

Cadillac still planning for big things in China originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Sat, 20 Apr 2013 16:27:00 EST. It's still not clear if the next Escalade will debut for the 2014 or 2015 model years, but Carscoops has what it claims to an exclusive first look of the new Cadillac, revealing a portion of the headlight, front fascia and wheel.

Judging from this small picture, it looks like the Escalade could incorporate styling cues that we've seen on new Cadillac models like the ELR and the 2014 CTS, but that article says that other design details could include tall, vertical taillights similar to the CTS Wagon, staggered-width wheels and a narrower daylight opening for the side windows. The last time we saw the fourth-generation 'Slade back in October in spy shots, the heavy camouflage prevented us from getting an idea of the luxury SUV's appearance, but this image and description gives us something to look forward to. Head on over to Carscoops for more potential information as well as a full rendering from back in January.
Continue reading Is this the 2014-15 Cadillac Escalade?

Is this the 2014-15 Cadillac Escalade? originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Sat, 20 Apr 2013 13:30:00 EST.
Step inside just about any new car these days and you'll quickly see that vehicle interiors have become a pretty nice place to spend some time in. For the third consecutive year, WardsAuto sat in each and every new vehicle that had received redesigned or updated interiors, and it has now named its top 10 Best Interiors.

Judges look at everything from design and fit-and-finish to comfort, safety and technology. Some of the standout selections include budget cars like the Chevrolet Spark and Kia Forte all the way up to more expensive luxury sedans like the Cadillac XTS and Lexus GS450h. An interesting note here is that WardsAuto praises Cadillac for its CUE infotainment system while Consumer Reports generally lambasts the system. Asian automakers definitely won the contest for nicest interiors as the list is comprised of five Japanese automakers and two South Korean, with Toyota and General Motors in a dead heat with the most number of cars on the list with two each.

Let's face it, car buyer's in today's consumer conscious crowd are far more interested in hearing fuel economy figures than horsepower numbers when it comes to choosing a new car. With gas prices still on the rise and more drivers on the road these days, several car manufacturers have remained focused on producing more fuel efficient cars in order to quickly capitalize on the gas sipping, money saving trend towards them.

Trusted financial advice website, Kiplinger recently announced its own list of what they consider the most fuel efficient cars of 2013. Although we agree with many of their top picks, we also noticed a few obvious choices didn't quite seem to make the cut. It should also come as no surprise to learn Toyota claimed five of the top 10 fuel efficient spots on Kiplinger's list, as the eco-minded automaker continues to lead the way with its popular hybrid technology being sprinkled throughout its vehicle line-up.

Only a flatworm would not have predicted the Cadillac ATS would help increase sales for America's erstwhile luxury brand of record; however, even the best automotive oracles didn't realize by how much: The ATS fueled a 49 per cent increase of the brand's year-on-year sales in March, the sixth straight month of growth for Cadillac. The momentum helped push General Motors to post a 6.4 per cent increase in sales in March versus 2012, leading its domestic competitors.

Dealership salesmen are among the first to register the shift occurring at Cadillac. A dealer related an incident in which he helped a mother affix a baby seat in a car for a test drive, explaining that as opposed to the older buyers that are still a Cadillac mainstay he's getting "a pretty diverse group that's coming through the door now" who are "younger and better educated." Aided by incentives on the ATS, Cadillac's sales are up 38 per cent so far this year, overtaking Acura as the fourth best selling luxury brand, and GM stock is benefiting with incremental gains because of it. Based on early response, the new 2014 Cadillac CTS should keep things going in the same direction.

The trend at the Wreath and Crest is part of a larger sales trend happening among domestics - with other models like the Dodge Dart and Ford Fusion doing well - and overall North American car sales. Head over to Bloomberg for the big picture and role the ATS plays in it.

The 2014 Cadillac CTS made a big splash last week at the New York Auto Show, but now that we've seen the sedan, we can start to wonder about whether coupe and wagon versions are in the cards. According to Edmunds, Cadillac is at least considering bringing back the CTS Coupe for a second generation, which seems like an even better chance since the brand's global marketing director, Jim Vurpillat, was quoted as saying that the car was the top-selling luxury coupe in the industry.

Of course, this goes against reports we heard last year that Caddy's coupe and wagon would live on just not under the CTS name, but the interview with Vurpillat has us hopeful for a next-generation CTS Coupe. If it does come to fruition, we would expect the new two-door to have a largely unique exterior design like the current CTS Coupe, to echo that of intended rivals like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and even the high-dollar BMW 6 Series.

Filed under: Luxury, Cadillac, GM, Sedan

"We were going to do a front-wheel drive Cadillac compact off of Delta because it was going to be less expensive," Doug Parks, General Motors' vice president of global product programs, told the Automotive News during the Detroit Auto Show in January of this year. That sentence, referring to early ATS discussions more than five years ago - a period when the automaker, and the industry, was struggling - reveals that Cadillac's highly acclaimed rear-wheel drive compact sedan almost never happened.

Parks revealed that that automaker actually built a 2.0-litre test mule, on GM's Delta platform (shared with the Chevrolet Cruze and Buick Verano) and tested it in Europe. While the prototype was "pretty darn good," according to Parks, the team realized that in order to compete against Mercedes-Benz and BMW it would have to invest in a new rear-wheel drive platform.

The resulting all-new Alpha platform would eventually underpin the Cadillac ATS, and many would argue that its balanced rear-wheel drive chassis is its single most important attribute. Thankfully, the Alpha's goodness won't stop with the ATS. The upcoming 2014 Cadillac CTS and the future Camaro will also share its architecture, meaning the Cimarron will remain a distant memory.

In case you haven't gotten enough of the 2014 Cadillac CTS that just debuted at the New York Auto Show, Cadillac has let us have some rolling footage of the car around its test track along with a few words from VP of marketing Don Butler and executive director of design Mark Adams.

You won't learn much more about its 420-horsepower, twin-turbo V6 but you can hear how it growls in the rain, and you can get a better idea of how you'll look in the driver's seat giving it a workout. That's got to be worth something, right? You'll find both videos just below.

With every new model, Cadillac indeed gets closer and closer to actually performing at the top of its class, rivaling those crafty Germans at their own sport/luxury sedan game. The best example yet of Cadillac's efforts to challenge the world came last year, when we met the 2013 ATS - a vehicle that we praised for its on-road dynamics and interior refinement, and later went on to be named North American Car of the Year.

If ever there were a Cadillac to truly rival the world's best, this could be it.

Now comes the 2014 CTS, an all-new sedan that aims to improve upon everything Cadillac learned from the ATS project, making its official debut this week at the 2013 New York Auto Show. We've already had the chance to check out the car in person, and everything seems to be a bit sharper with this new CTS, and we aren't just talking about the bold front end. The powertrain lineup has expanded to three engine offerings, including an all-new twin-turbo V6; the interior materials are some of the best we've seen and felt on a Cadillac ever, and the engineering team's effort to make this CTS longer, lower and leaner will no doubt pay off once it hits the road. If ever there were a Cadillac to truly rival the world's best, this could be it.
Continue reading 2014 Cadillac CTS debuts new design, twin-turbo power, Vsport model [w/video]

2014 Cadillac CTS debuts new design, twin-turbo power, Vsport model [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 26 Mar 2013 18:01:00 EST.
After reporting on an airborne Audi TT smashing into the side of a house and a rally car crashing into a rural home in Newfoundland, we can't help but think house crashing has become a growing trend or competition among dangerous drivers.

The latest in the recent rash of house crashing incidents may have literally topped the charts, as a distracted driver managed to land their Cadillac CTS on the roof of their next door neighbour's home. Thankfully, no injuries were reported by the passengers of the car or by anyone inside the house at the time of the crash.

The strange sight has no doubt created an awkward situation among once-friendly "neighbourinos," as emergency crews had to use a large crane to safely remove the oddly placed car from the upset home-owner's roof, which suffered extensive damage.

The redesigned 2014 Cadillac CTS will be unveiled this Tuesday on the eve of the New York Auto Show, but as often happens, some images of the car have leaked onto the web a few days early. Previously, the only information we had on the 2014 CTS concerned the all-new twin-turbo V6 engine that will be found underhood, rated at 420 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.

While none show the new car in its entirety, the images do show much of the front end, particularly the headlights that feature vertical bars of LEDs that start down low as foglights and continue up to the top of the front fenders. They're similar to the lighting design first shown on the XTS and ATS, except the lower portions are much taller.

There are also views of the rear end and one of the taillights, as well as an interior shot of the front passenger door. The latter image has us most intrigued, as it shows some very high end materials being used in the new CTS interior. The low-gloss wood trim, in particular, looks very premium.

We found these images at GM Inside News, which claimed they surfaced on Cadillac's official Flickr account. GM Inside News has pointed out to us the Flickr page they mention in their article, which can viewed here. It's not an official Cadillac account so we can't say from where the owner of this private account got the images. Cadillac does not have a Flickr account, the brand only lists Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts on its consumer site.

To watch a CTS-V hit the drag strip, hit the jump.

It looks like Russian and US diplomats are in for a round of "My limo's bigger than your limo." Russian automaker ZiL has been working on the car pictured above for the last six years and they believe they've perfected the Presidential limo. The car was commissioned after Vladimir Putin proclaimed that he wanted to ride in something Russian, not another run-of-the-mill Mercedes or Cadillac (take that, Obama).

How did ZiL end up with the above shape? "We tried to preserve the generic feature[s] of the ZiL: the recognizable style, the lighting, the mirrors," said ZiL's Mikhail Sattarov. "We wanted it to be clear that this is a ZiL, not a soapbox, not a Mercedes. If you look, it's dark blue. If you look at what Obama drives around in, it's a scary submarine, no kind of aesthetic; it's awful to look at." If the rhetoric continues down this path we could be in for a political spat fit for UN intervention!

Of course, while the Russian automaker snubbed American exterior design they seem to appreciate American engineering - the ZiL will use an engine and transmission built in America.

Speaking of the engine, you're probably wondering about the technical bits under-hood. It's reported that the Russian ZiL limo is powered by a 7.7 litre engine that achieves a rather jet-plane-like 27.5 L/100km (8.57 mpg). This mill is capable of hurling the 3,175 kg (7,000 lb) limo-tank to a terminal velocity of 200 km/h (125 mph). As far as fuel efficiency goes, this actually represents a significant improvement, more than doubling mileage; this ZiL's predecessor was said to suck back fuel to the tune of 72.4 L/100km (3.5 mpg).
Since we're already on the topic of fuel, we should point out that like the US presidential limo, the Russian ZiL limo burns gasoline as its fuel of choice - not diesel. American Secret Service personal recently caused a major security breach when they accidentally poured diesel fuel where only gasoline is welcome.

Of course, no one around this machine is concerned about fuel economy, safety is what matters most. The ZiL limo is armoured such that it can take high calibre bullets and even survive land mine and RPG explosions. When it comes to interior appointments the ZiL is said to carry the Russian president in the lap of luxury, with a fully stocked workstation within.

So, who's mega-armoured ride is best? There's clearly only one way to solve this: a presidential limo drag-race.
