Strategic Vision has released its annual Total Quality awards, and some of the winners may come as a surprise. To quote Alexander Edwards, President of Strategic Vision, "For the first time in over a decade our comprehensive and complete study of Quality resulted in more domestic winners than imports."

That's not to say import brands performed poorly. Volkswagen was voted the best overall corporation in Total Quality for the eighth-straight year, and Audi tied with Lexus for the best individual brand. Breaking things down on a model-by-model basis, here are some notable victories:

Dodge Dart, Best Small Car

Ford Fusion / Chevrolet Volt, Best Midsize Car

A lucky Vancouver man survived being hit on his scooter by an oncoming TransLink bus in BC. Mark Jarder, a 23-year-old photographer was waiting to make a left turn on a busy street, when he was suddenly struck by the city bus which he claims "tried to beat the light."

The surprising crash video (which Jarder posted online) was recorded by his helmet-mounted GoPro camera, as the accident forced his red scooter to swerve into a traffic median and then tossed him to the ground. Reports have since been filed with the Vancouver Police Department, Insurance Corporation of British Columbia and TransLink.

"The bus hit the scooter, not me directly. That's why I'm alive... What I didn't expect was the bus to actually speed up and change lanes. It tried to beat the light," Jarder told The Huffington Post. As a result of the crash, Jarder sustained several minor injuries including road rash and a few bruises, narrowly avoiding any broken bones. The same can't be said for his poor scooter, which took most of the impact and had its footrest literally split in half by the bus.

While many of us may never have the chance, or be willing to part with the hundreds of thousands of dollars required to own our own supercar, the experience of driving a supercar for the first time is incredibly memorable, and there is no surprise that it is something that is on the bucket list of millions of car enthusiasts around the globe. Fortunately, more and more boutique rental companies have been springing up to provide that first (and possibly repeat) experience.

The process for supercar rental isn't as complex as one may think, however it's a bit more of a process than booking your average budget rental car. Pricing can range from roughly $800 to $2,500 per day, so you're best to map out as much of your driving as you can. There are now supercar rental companies in many major cities, but the last thing you want to do is waste valuable hours on bad city traffic so we strongly recommend picking a destination for your drive.

Lou La Vie out of Miami will drop your rental to your requested destination, while other companies like Exotics Racing in Las Vegas have direct access to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and offer rental packages as brief as $249 for 5 laps in a Mercedes-Benz SLS. If you're wanting to go further afield, there are a few companies that will offer up rentals to challenge the dreaded Nurburgring if you are able to get there before it closes. If you desire a warmer climate, Ascari Race Resort offers driving experience days on their private track in Malaga, Spain with full instruction.

Whether you go local or abroad, one thing is certain you will never forget or regret your first experience in a supercar. The only advice we can offer is to be prepared to have any concept of speed you previously had to be shattered.

Click past the jump for a quick look at the supercar rental experience from Lou La Vie in Miami. A video on the Nurburgring follows.

Filed under: BMW, Car Buying, Canada, Sedan, Performance

For those buyers who simply can't wait for the next generation BMW M3 (or whatever the new naming convention may be), it appears BMW Canada has your solution. For a very limited time, BMW will be offering the BMW 335i and the 335i xDrive M Performance Edition to Canadians, but you'll have to act fast. The über-limited Edition will be available to order here only until May 17! As we saw at the Vancouver Auto Show, there is lots to discuss about the M Performance Edition considering it's wealth of tuning parts fitted to the already impressive 335i but for a modest MSRP.

Upon first glance, it's clear the aero upgrades are crafted with purpose. The dramatic front bumper is fitted with a body-colour front splitter to reduce lift. The M Performance sideskirts are colour-matched with a black insert and 'M-Performance' badging. Around the rear of the 335i is a rear diffuser and subtle lip spoiler to manage the airflow passing the F30 silhouette. Black kidney grilles supplant the chrome units to enhance the appearance already augmented by 20-inch M Performance alloy wheels.

Under the lid is the M Power Kit, which includes free-flow air intake, tuned ECU and improved cooling parts. The M Performance exhaust is also fitted to the car and the resulting output rises from 300 hp/ 300 lb-ft to 326 hp with 332 lb-ft (317 lb-ft on 6MT cars). While we haven't had a chance to test the M Performance Edition, we have tested other models with the M Power kit and exhaust, which combine for a notable improvement in performance and aggresive sound. BMW claims an impressive 4.9-second 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time shaved down from 5.4s of the standard 335i.

When it comes to colour selection, BMW kept it limited but very high impact. The 335i M Performance Edition can be ordered in one of four colours: Black Sapphire, Glacier Silver, Valencia Orange and one of our all time faves Laguna Seca Blue. Inside the cabin, buyer's are treated with Individual piano black inserts.

With the ongoing popularity of shows like Top Gear, television networks continue to search and develop new ideas to create the next big hit in automotive programming. If you're sick of seeing old Pimp My Ride reruns and still shaking your head after watching "R U Faster Than a Redneck?" on SpeedTV (we'll admit, it's an acquired taste), the driving stunts and punishing challenges facing contestant's in Last Car Standing on Discovery Canada might restore your faith in automotive television.

The Canadian produced concept is simple, as each episode pits a group of determined rust-bucket driving beater car owners against each other in a series of difficult driving stunts and the "Last Car Standing" is awarded with a much needed $10,000 restoration and a chance at a $50,000 grand prize.

Most driver's have experienced a love-hate relationship with an embarrassing beater car at some point in time and this entertaining show highlights the surprisingly reliable and not-so-reliable results, as these falling-apart clunkers fight their way through several rounds of grueling car crunching competition. At the end of each round, the car with the worst score endures the ultimate humiliation of being impaled on the massive Spike of Shame right before its owner's very eyes.

Click here to watch a preview of Last Car Standing and enjoy the automotive mayhem unfold every Monday night on Discovery Canada.
Flying cars aren't on their way, flying cars are here. If we're going to see more of them in the air above us, we're also going to see more images like the one above, in which a Maverick flying car has crash landed in a tree. The reverse-prop-driven buggy with the removable parasail was certified airworthy by the FAA in June of 2010. In this incident the pilot, Ray Siebring, said he was coming in for a landing at the airport in Vernon, British Columbia when his flying car suddenly made a sharp left turn into three descending spirals.

By the time Siebring stopped the spiraling he was so low that all he could do was mitigate the crash. Noticing an empty school field below, he managed to power up and get the vehicle down just beyond the school ground, through some fencing and into a tree. Neither Siebring nor his passenger was seriously injured.

If you want to see how the Maverick usually works, check out the video below of it making a coffee run.

Unlike the last Lamborghini crash we reported on, the driver of this 2008 Murcielago roadster decided to come clean about his careless and expensive accident rather than abandon his exotic car and mysteriously flee the scene.

According to reports, the Lambo valued at around $200,000 (over $400K new), nearly flipped over as it dangerously spun out onto the sidewalk after skidding across a busy road in Waterloo, Ontario. A spokesperson for Waterloo Regional Police says investigation officers noted the driver appears to have lost control because of the power of the car. Although the full extent of damage done is still unknown, the 30-year-old man behind the wheel is now facing charges for careless driving and his vehicle was towed from the scene.

Although the damage may look pretty bad, the good news is nobody was hurt by the smashed supercar and the six-figure Lamborghini also didn't shoot flames at people (à la Justin Bieber) or catch fire like other ones we've seen before. Hopefully, this Lamborghini owner has learned a valuable lesson and won't complain (like this guy did) about any expensive fines or costly repairs that could be associated with this crash.

You'd think that by now British Columbia auto enthusiasts would have learned from the many stories of car seizures we've reported on over the past few years, but another group of 20-25 year old boys have become the latest victim of BC's 40km/h and over impound law. The group was called in to Squamish RCMP, and Air One, one of the Lower Mainland Traffic Safety Helicopters was called in to tail them until West Vancouver PD could intercept. Under normal circumstances we suppose the term "young men" might have been appropriate, but after hearing the excuse used by one of the drivers it is clear that adulthood for these individuals is still a ways away.

Of all the stupid excuses we have heard for speeding over the years, from "My wife is in labour" to "My speedometer doesn't work", we were a bit surprised to hear this new one. The driver in question claims that he was speeding because his temporary insurance was set to run out at midnight, and that "with great friends I had with me, they decided to try and get home with me and not leave me to fend for myself." There are so many things to pick apart from his defence that we don't know where to start other than if he were to have an accident while speeding home, does he really think his insurance would cover his reckless driving?

The group is reported to have been driving a cluster of Nissan 240SX, as well as a Nissan Skyline, Toyota MR2, and an Acura Integra which were all reported to be "in various stages of modification". Revscene forum members are quick to tout some high performance mods, but based on the verbiage used by the West Van Police, we wouldn't be surprised if we're talking lowering springs and mufflers at this point. It is also noted that one vehicle was sporting a "I Heart Drifting" bumper sticker at the time of the incident.

Kevin Reimer has an interesting career and a fascinating car. The resident of Vancouver, BC is a professional downhill skateboarder - which we now know is a thing you can be - who sees a lot of commonality between his extreme occupation and his cherry 1991 Nissan Skyline GT-R.

The subjects of the latest Petrolicious joint, Racing Champions, Reimer waxes philosophical about skateboarding and driving down some of the same routes. You'll not be surprised to hear that riding the curves of a mountain slope, be it on a deck or in a bucket seat, both rely on grip and nerve in various measure. Scroll down to see the video for yourself, and don't miss the rest of our Petrolicious library when you're done.
Automotive News Europe reports the new Audi manufacturing facility in San Jose Chiapa, Mexico will increase the automaker's production capacity for the Q5 SUV by 150,000 units per year. While the plant will supply every market with the exception of China, most of the production is slated to head to the US market. Of course, plenty of units will be heading to all-wheel drive and SUV-hungry Canadian drivers.

While speaking with ANE, Audi CEO Rupert Stradler said, "Worldwide, every third Audi will be an SUV by 2020." So far this year, 40 per cent of Audi vehicles sold in the US market have been light trucks, with the company's sales in that segment jumping by 53 per cent. By comparison, Audi passenger car sales have increased by just one per cent.

The first Q5 vehicles from the San Hose Chiapa plant will show up on dealer lots in 2016. Click through to watch a video review of the Audi Q5 SUV.

It certainly didn't take long for Toronto motorists to take advantage of the amazing weather these days, as this excited motorcyclist was spotted popping high speed wheelies along highway 403 this past Sunday.

The eye-popping stunt video was shot by a local news station employee who claims he encountered the biker traveling at speeds over 120 km/h before the motorcycle suddenly took off at upwards of 150 km/h. If police were to catch the unknown motorcycle rider, they could be charged with stunt driving or criminally dangerous driving.

According to reports from Ontario Provincial Police, it will be difficult for officers to pursue this matter because the driver wasn't stopped by police and a license plate can't be seen in the video. And so it seems the ever-elusive wheelie-king of Toronto remains on the loose... for now.

Without a doubt, the three-wheel Campagna T-Rex 16S is one of the most fascinating vehicles I have ever driven.

"Drive it like a car, but act like you are on a motorcycle," were the words of wisdom bestowed upon me before the keys were handed over, and the advice couldn't have been more accurate. During the next four days, I zipped blissfully around town with the wind blowing through my hair as I watched the front wheels articulate over the pavement. I could smell the ocean as I drove down Pacific Coast Highway, and taste the dry brush of the Santa Monica Mountains as I toured the canyons.

I also took a bumble bee in the cheek, was nearly squashed by an inattentive driver in a Toyota Camry, cut off by a Ford F-150 and I was stared down by the law at every opportunity.

Apparently, that's the price of having the wind blow through your hair as you mount a low-slung, agile steed with a very unique three-wheel configuration.

2013 Campagna T-Rex 16S [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Mon, 06 May 2013 12:00:00 EST.
Below is the first video footage released showing the new Porsche 911 Turbo in action. If you have even the faintest interest in Porsche, you'll want to click through to watch the high-def action.

The camera work shows off the new '991' generation 911 Turbo's skin with emphases on its new, gaping air intakes, devoid of any cross elements. They look as if they could vaccum up a small child or pet ala jet engine intake - and as it turns out, they do feed two turbines... twin variable-vane turbo impellers are found down-stream.

Active aero is also on display - the new 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S models feature active aerodynamics at both the front and rear of the car for increased performance. The front splitter can drop lower to the pavement thus increasing front-end down-force, while the rear wing now has greater adjustment and angle. A slippery efficiency mode has both aero elements fully retracted to reduce drag and improve fuel economy.

Car and Driver asked the head of BMW M, Friedrich Nitschke, a few questions about what the go-fast division had in mind for the future, and was rewarded with some enlightening answers. The best news to purist ears is that Nitschke said customers don't want all-wheel drive on their M cars, so it's the rear wheels alone that will propel new product into the future. If you want both an M badge and four driven wheels, it's the X5 M, X6 M and M Performance models you're looking for in the catalog.

"Mixed bag" is the phrase you're looking for regarding the other answers. Nitschke said that future M engines "at the core of their architecture" would "be closer to BMW AG engines" that are optimized for M cars, instead of following in the line of unique marvels like the V10 and naturally aspirated V8. They will keep the high redlines, however, with Nitschke saying "there is room beyond" the 7,000 rpm mark in BMW's current V8 turbos.

Managing weight will keep the same priority for M that it is for every other brand, so electrically assisted power steering is coming, as is an "unconventional" materials mix. At the smaller end of the M scale, Nitschke described three-cylinder engines as "attractive," saying that the brand can produce more than 310 horsepower from a three-pot.

As for the current M3, it's all gone. Nitschke said the company has about six more months of coupe and convertible production, but the units to come already have customers "on principle." But if you've got cash-in-hand, don't be dismayed - we're confident your local Canadian BMW dealership can wrangle up an shiny new M3 on demand... while they last.

Nissan has released its MSRP pricing for the new Track Edition of Godzilla, which is exciting, except that we won't see this GT-R variant north of the border here in Canada. Shame.

If you happen to have a Green Card and a US address, or feel like importing a pre-owned specimen to Canada, you'll find the price of a new 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition tapering off from the American MSRP of US$115,710 (*not including a $1,000 destination and handling charge). For reference, the Nissan GT-R starts at $103,980 in Canada, and the only other model on offer is the GT-R Black Edition, which sells for $113,380 Canadian dollars.

Nissan calls the GT-R Track Edition its most exclusive model, which makes sense as it will be limited to just 150 examples for the US market. The competition-ready Track Edition gets Bilstein DampTronic shocks and revised spring rates; all chosen after more development work by Nissan engineers at the Nürburgring. A carbon fibre rear spoiler and six-spoke black wheels come with the package, as do blue-trimmed, high-grip front seats inside. To save weight, the car's rear seats have been deleted in this model.

The Detroit News reports it may not be long before AM/FM radios disappear from cars altogether. The newspaper spoke with Thilo Koslowski, vice president for the research firm Gartner, Inc., who said that "AM and FM as a delivering mechanism isn't going to be the most important in cars anymore." According to Koslowski, manufacturers will focus their efforts on smartphone integration as well as internet browsing and music streaming. That means while listeners may still enjoy their favourite radio stations, it's less likely they'll rely on traditional broadcast systems to do so.

Automakers from nearly every corner of the globe are already pushing smartphone app integration in a big way, and General Motors recently announced its vehicles will soon be available with 4G mobile internet. But, as you might expect, there's a sizable push against abandoning the airwaves entirely. For starters, current technology doesn't produce a reliable high-speed cell signal everywhere, whereas AM and FM signals are largely reliable over vast distances.

While the CD player is already fading from prominence in new vehicles, other analysts don't see in-dash radios going the same route. While speaking with The Detroit News, John Canali, a senior analyst in automotive multimedia for Strategy Analytics said he believes AM and FM aren't going anywhere due to the fact that automakers don't want to alienate customers.

Volkswagen has pushed up the power for the new half-model year. For 2013.5 (yep, this isn't a 2013 and it's not quite a 2014), the 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI engine offered in the Beetle Turbo, Beetle Turbo Convertible and Jetta GLI now makes 210 horsepower, an increase of 10 ponies over the previous version of the long-running engine. Torque remains unchanged at 207 pound-feet.

According to VW, the Beetle Turbo can accelerate from 0-60 (0-96 km/h) in 6.6 seconds, which is a 0.2-second improvement over the previous car. The Jetta GLI does the run to 60 in 6.7 seconds, according to the automaker. Those worried about economy will be pleased to know that the increase in performance extends to the pump - VW claims increases of four to eight per cent in city and combined fuel economy.

The Beetle Turbo is fitted with new R Line bumpers for 2013.5; a separate R Line package that includes the new bumpers, a diffuser at the rear, 19-inch Tornado wheels and badging inside and out. Meanwhile, the Jetta GLI gets LED taillamps, and the automaker isn't mentioning any increase in price on the Jetta GLI. Want to know more? Scroll down below for the press release.

While the race for more gears inside a transmission continues, there are still buyers who want to get back to basics. It seems 8-speed boxes are in everything now and Volkswagen has just promised a 10-speed dual clutch unit to wring out ridiculously low fuel consumption. While it seems like only yesterday manual transmissions were the way for performance cars to go, many outstanding paddle shifters have been developed to embarrass the best of gear bangers.

At the same time, there are certain models that deserve a manual transmission. Not only are they more engaging, but they evoke that charm and soul that the automated boxes lack. Just as gearheads lament the demise of the manual transmission in the current GT3 and now the next generation 911 Turbo will only have the PDK too, we find this in the Porsche Canada press fleet.

To our surprise, the 2013 Porsche Cayenne V6 can be bought with a proper 6-speed manual transmission complete with a third pedal in the driver's foot well. Yes, of course there is the 8-speed Tiptronic available for those who want to play gas-brake in traffic. But for the purpose of this test, it was time to engage this SUV very differently, in a way that we haven't engaged a car since last year! After some quick calculations, the last time I drove stick before this Cayenne 6MT was early November and if memory is correct, it was one of my own personal cars.
Continue reading 2013 Porsche Cayenne 6-speed

2013 Porsche Cayenne 6-speed originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Fri, 03 May 2013 12:45:00 EST.
Tucked in the middle of a very long business update press release, Spyker has confirmed that it will unveil a topless version of the B6 Venator Concept that we first saw in coupe form at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. A specific launch timeframe has not been given, other than the ultra-vague "later this year," but we'll bet our bottom dollar that the open-top B6 will show its face at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

Spyker states that the launch of the B6 marks "the beginning of a new era for the brand, one that will include a significant increase in production." The B6 will go into production in 2014, with the first cars being allocated for Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and India. Production of North American-spec models will kick off in the fall of 2014.

We don't imagine the specs will change from the coupe, meaning the mid-mounted V6 with 375 horsepower should still be offered in the Spyder. A key factor to the coupe's performance is lightness (the whole package weighs in at just 1,406 kg (3,100 pounds)), and while we don't imagine the Spyder will be a porker, some sort of folding top mechanism and its associated bracing will no doubt add weight.

We'll keep our ear to the ground for more details before the car's unveiling later this year. For now, scroll down for a full business update in Spyker's press release, then be sure to watch the video reveal of the B6 Venator concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

The Turbo S will dispatch the Nürburgring Nordschleife in "well under seven and a half minutes."

Porsche is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its 911 Turbo in the best possible way: by announcing the next-generation of the rear-engined beast. The 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S are here, and man oh man, do they seem like the business.

At the heart of the new Turbo is a rear-mounted, turbocharged, 3.8-litre flat-six engine, making use of twin, variable-turbine-geometry turbos. For the standard Turbo, the result is 520 horsepower, a 0-60 miles per hour (0-96 km/h) sprint of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 315 km/h (196 mph). Not quick enough you say? Well, Porsche will also happily sell you a Turbo S with 560 horsepower, 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in just 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 318 km/h (198 mph). Impressively, Porsche also notes that the Turbo S will dispatch the Nürburgring Nordschleife in "well under 7 and a half minutes - with standard production tires." Church.

All that engine power is managed by Porsche's seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox, which would seem to be the only available transmission for the Turbo. The PDK transmission and turbo engine make use of a new thermal management system that, in concert with an auto stop/start system, are expected to make this 911 Turbo more fuel-efficient than ever. Expect EPA ratings closer to the car's on-sale date at the end of 2013.

Of course, with the insane levels of power and performance for this new 911 Turbo comes a hefty price tag, too. Canadian pricing has the new 911 Turbo models starting at $169,200 for the Turbo and $206,600 for the Turbo S. By comparison, the Turbo will start at US$149,250, while the Turbo S asks US$182,050 south of the border.
