According to a report on the Chrysler Communications Facebook page and one fairly grainy image of the production line, at around 11:00AM Eastern this morning, the one-millionth Jeep Wrangler JK will roll out of the company's Toledo assembly plant.

The third-generation or "JK" Jeep Wrangler has been around since the 2007 model year, and has obviously been more popular than ever. With a greater than ever number of trim levels, two-door and four-door Unlimited models and hardy off-roading Rubicon packages, the JK offers more to choose from than ever for those looking for something in a traditional Jeep. In fact, with the modern 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 powering it, the 2012 model year saw record sales.

With a model refresh due out for the Wrangler in 2015 (along with the likely addition of a diesel engine option), we expect that sales will continue to roll right along, too.

An impromptu gas-station musical erupted at a Costco gas station when TV host Tim Stack started talking to a patron of the gas station through the small ad TV above the fuel pump. Luckily for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno host, this unsuspecting customer was no ordinary man of the pump, but a soulful, fun-loving bar-tender and avid karaoke singer who was happy to play along.

Not long into the musical fossil-fuel filling, Will Sims, our favourite gas-pumper, brought his wife Monifa onto the concrete stage. The resulting duet brought other curious patrons around to see what was causing the song-and-dance commotion.

The Sims couple's zest for life and playful attitude during this spontaneous karaoke interaction so impressed Jay Leno that he decided to have both Will and Monifa on his show to perform for his live audience. We can't help but wonder if the Sims' next calling will be to write a marriage guide-book as it's abundantly clear from the video that this couple has got it right, and couldn't be happier after 12 years of marriage. Watching Monifa's interaction with her husband is downright hilarious and when she cuts to her "dance-break" it's easy to see that this fitness instructor is not to be outdone by her husband.

Hennessey Performance Engineering has created an HPE650 package for the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 fitted with the 6.4-litre Hemi engine. When it leaves the showroom floor it has 470 horsepower and gets from 0-60 miles per hour (0-96 km/h) in 4.8 seconds. When it leaves Hennessey's garage floor after the upgrade it has 650 horsepower - 530 hp at the wheels, according to Hennessey - and gets to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.9 seconds on its way to running the quarter-mile in 12.6 seconds.

There's more than just a roots-type supercharger bolt-on, with ported cylinder heads and high-flow headers among the many changes made to the engine. You can watch it prove its spec sheet on the drag strip in the video below.

General Motors, Ford and Chrysler logos

While monthly sales figures might be an easy way of tracking the progression of the auto industry and individual automakers, looking at market share might be more indicative of how each company is actually standing up against its competitors. For the Detroit Three automakers, they have collectively lost almost 30 per cent of the market over the last 20 years, but now, for the first time since 1993, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have each posted market share gains at the same time.

According to Automotive News, Ford's share increased the most by 0.7 per cent, GM was up 0.5 per cent and Chrysler rose marginally by 0.2 per cent, giving the Detroit automakers a total market share of 45.6 percent. As for Japan's Big Three, the article reports that Toyota is up by 0.7 per cent, Nissan is down the same amount and Honda has seen "little change."

Kid Police Chase

Police in Utah were in for a shock when they spotted an erratic driver recently. After following the white Dodge Intrepid (Chrysler Intrepid here in Canada) for a spell, the pursuing officers watched as the driver parked the car, jumped from behind the wheel and ran into his father's house. Standard fare, you say? Not quite.

The driver was actually a seven-year-old boy who had pilfered his dad's keys to skip out on going to church. The officers opted to let the parents handle disciplining the youngster rather than subject him to the legal system, but cautioned the dad to keep his car keys in a more secure location in the future. Good call!

Click here to watch the full video of the chase for yourself below. The police say the kid did a pretty good job of keeping the car under control, but did run one stop sign. As Ricky Bobby would say, "I wanna go fast."

Terry Box, a writer for the Dallas Morning News, was tootling down the Dallas North Tollway in a Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn pickup after work and enjoying the ride. Box thought the US$53,335, option-filled press loaner had been "flawless - very serious competition for anything built by Ford or Chevy." And then, for reasons that still aren't clear, something in the engine compartment caught fire and the Ram cremated itself on the shoulder of an off-ramp.

Box tells the story and it isn't an indictment of the truck, but a cautionary tale about how new vehicles don't burn like the old ones did - and why not to go back for your gym bag. Chrysler is busy shuffling executives around in the wake of Ram head Fred Diaz's departure. The automaker has named Canadian exec Reid Bigland (pictured, right) as Diaz's successor in the role of president and CEO of Ram, though Bigland will continue his duties as the head of US sales and the president and CEO of Chrysler Canada. Bigland first came to Chrysler in 2006 from Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation, so the guy knows a thing or two about trucks.

Meanwhile, Timothy Kuniskis will take over as president and CEO of Dodge. Previously, he served as the head of Fiat in North America and has been with Chrysler in one capacity or another since 1992. His old title now falls to Jason Stoicevich, who will also continue to work as the director of the automaker's California Business Center. Finally, Bruno Cattori will take over as the president and CEO of Chrysler Mexico.

Diaz left his position to take over as a divisional vice president of sales and marketing with Nissan.

Due to a lack of funding, Chrysler closed the doors to its Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, MI back in December, but it sounds like the facility will be open next month for one last hurrah. According to a report in the Detroit Free Press, the Chrysler Museum will be open to the public one last time on June 8 for the annual Chrysler Employee Motorsport Association car show.

While the car show will take place in the museum's parking lot from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM on June 8 with a theme dedicated to muscle cars past and present, all attendees will be able to be among the last people to tour the museum - with free admission. The museum is known for housing some of the more important production and concept cars from Chrysler's history.

SRT Color Kitchen - Viper coupe - screencap

Paint colours are a big deal for any automaker, and choosing hues for a specific brand can take as much fretting and focus as nearly any other aspect of vehicle design. For SRT, that means finding colours that cooperate with everything from the high-performance Grand Cherokee SRT8 SUV and the Chrysler 300 SRT8 sports sedan, to the wilder Charger SRT8, Challenger SRT8 and Viper. That range requires more than a little breadth, and Jim Parker, Head of Exterior Colour at Chrysler, recently took the time to sit down for a little video to talk about what goes on in the SRT Colour Kitchen.

What start out as computer-generated images move to paint samples from a supplier, which then get sprayed on more complex shapes. From there, SRT may spray a whole car to see how the colour looks in the flesh before ever giving the hue the nod for production.

Dodge Ram 1500 Red Wings edition parked at center ice

After a rather successful foray with a Red Wings edition of the Ram 1500 last year - some 3,000 units sold - the truck brand is both re-upping its relationship with Detroit's hockey powerhouse and considering expansion into other sport franchises.

Ram announced last month that it would carry on its partnership with the Red Wings throughout the 2012-13 NHL season. The company will not offer a special edition version of the 2013 Ram, due in part to the strike-shortened NHL season. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Ram boss Fred Diaz called the Red Wings partnership an experiment that "worked out so incredibly well, we're looking at the possibility of doing other things with other sports."

Diaz doesn't see Ram doing deals with entire leagues, but does think that other teams and cities, with a similar "rabid fan base" could make sense for co-branding. "We'll pick our spots and our moments, " said Diaz, "and if we feel like we have a good opportunity, we'll do it."

In one of the most interesting roundtable discussions we've seen in quite some time, the boys from Motor Trend, along with pro racing driver Randy Pobst, sat down with SRT head honcho Ralph Gilles to discuss the 2014 Viper. And the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, naturally. As you may remember, Motor Trend has filmed two videos pitting the latest Viper from SRT against the standard-bearing ZR1, with the Viper losing the first battle but barely eking out a victory with the upgraded TA model in the second.

A few interesting tidbits sneak out regarding the Viper, such as the fact that an ACR model isn't ready "yet," as well as the story of how the TA model came into existence after the first test by Motor Trend. Apparently, that test also resulted in a slight softening of the regular Viper's suspension for production. Interestingly, Gilles doesn't seem ready to admit defeat even in that first testing session, saying that the Viper used by MT was a pre-production model and that it had been out of alignment - that said, he does offer up an apology of sorts for "throwing gas on the fire" on social networks after the video hit the web.

Moving away from the Viper toward the end of the discussion, Gilles touches on the new Camaro Z28 and mentions that "the Challenger is under the knife as we speak... and we're going to come with an answer to [the Z28] and an answer for our friends at Ford." That sounds mighty intriguing... though Gilles also admits that a Cuda isn't coming "anytime soon," but that it is "a couple years out" on a different platform than the Challenger. Fortunately, it sounds like the next-generation of the Challenger SRT will make an appearance in New York in 2014.

2012 Chrysler 300 S

Word has it Chrysler is keen to shove its new turbo diesel V6 into a range of models. Wards Auto reports Chrysler President and CEO Saad Chehab has made it clear the automaker is investigating the possibility of using the 3.0-litre oil-burner in the 300 sedan. While speaking at an Automotive Press Association luncheon, Chehab said, "It's a matter of how much the customer is willing to pay for that premium. That's the only issue with it."

The Chrysler 300 is sold as the Lancia Thema in Europe complete with a diesel of its very own, and since the Jeep Grand Cherokee is now available with the diesel V6 here in North America, it only makes sense that the engine could potentially show up on the 300 order sheet. Opting for the 3.0 V6 in the Jeep Grand Cherokee will set you back an additional couple grand, however.

Chehab also said the engine could make an appearance in the next-generation Chrysler 200, which is set to debut next year.

2013 SRT Viper - front three-quarter view at speed in the rain

Almost a year to the day after SRT president and CEO Ralph Gilles first introduced - and kissed the fender of - the 2013 SRT Viper at the 2012 New York Auto Show, the high-performance coupe has begun shipping to dealers. The first production cars started rolling off the line at Chrysler's Conner Avenue Assembly plant in Detroit back in January (a facility Gilles lovingly compares to Santa's workshop), but The Detroit News is reporting that the cars just started heading to customers across on Sunday.

Two of the first examples destined for driveways include a Stryker Red example that was the very 2013 Viper to be sold (the car was won by Scott Thomas of Oklahoma City at a Barrett-Jackson charity auction for cancer for US$300,000), along with a white example headed to Gilles' personal collection. The report says that Gilles took delivery of his Viper and put just 48 km (30 miles) on it before heading to New York for this week's auto show. What, he didn't drive?

2013.5 Chrysler 200 S Special Edition - white - live from 2013 New York Auto Show floor

The world is set to get an all-new Chrysler 200 next year, thereby finally putting the bones of the long-serving Sebring to rest. To tide us all over until then, the automaker has released the 2013.5 200 S Special Edition. As a collaboration between Chrysler and the Imported from Detroit clothing line, the sedan features plenty of aesthetic tweaks to give it a bit more attitude. Those include tinted headlamp and taillamp housings, body-colour door sills and 18-inch gloss black wheels. There's also a revised front fascia with a black mesh grille, while the tail end gets a decklid spoiler and a revised valance.

Indoors, the seats are clad in black, water-resistant fabric courtesy of Carhartt. Expect to see the 2013.5 200 S Special Edition in dealers soon - the price tag south of the border will be US$28,870. While there are plenty of questions to be asked here, one is more nagging than the others. Why bother buying the special edition when an all-new model is mere months away? It's an age-old question, but it still bears asking.

2014 SRT Viper TA live on stage at 2013 New York Auto Show

As if the 2013 SRT Viper GTS hasn't stirred up enough excitement by beating the Corvette ZR1's record at Laguna Seca, SRT has created a more specialized version of the car designed to attack any track. On display at the New York Auto Show, the 2014 Viper TA has been enhanced for even better track duty, but production will be limited to just 33 units when it goes on sale later this year.

Obvious changes to SRT's flagship performance car include upgraded Brembo brakes, a carbon fibre x-brace under the hood and carbon fibre front and rear spoilers - the latter aero changes providing about 136 kg (300 pounds) of additional downforce at speed. Oh, and if you didn't notice, the car will only be offered in this eye-blazing Crusher Orange paint job with black, lightweight wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires. The black-only interior gets similar contrasting orange stitching all over to bring some colour indoors.

Less obvious changes include a revised two-mode Bilstein suspension that is firmer than the standard Viper GTS to begin with, and has a "smaller spread between the modes," suggesting that even though the car is road-legal, it's likely to be a pretty extreme ride. As is the case with "lesser" Vipers, the TA relies on the 8.4 litre V10 to churn out 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque.

2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 392 Appearance Package - TorRed paint, front three-quarter view

We recently spent some time in a 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee, and while he found a lot to love - particularly underhood - he didn't care for the sedan's retro-steeped visuals, preferring the standard SRT's look instead. Perhaps he'll dig this throwback look instead. Over the weekend, Chrysler unveiled this handsome 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 392 Appearance Package at the eighth annual Spring Festival of LXs, a gathering of Charger, Challenger and Chrysler 300 enthusiasts held in Irvine, California.

Unveiled by SRT CEO Ralph Gilles in front of an estimated 2,500 Spring Fest goers, the 392 features 20-inch Black Vapor Chrome alloys set off by a black-painted roof panel, hood bulge, spoiler and mirror caps. Additional exterior changes include model-specific striping and badging along with the requisite serialized dash plaque inside. The 392 will be available in five colours - Billet Silver Metallic, Bright White, Hemi Orange, Plum Crazy and the TorRed pain seen here.

Performance-wise, the 392 remains unchanged from standard SRT8s, but that's hardly a slight - the 6.4 litre Hemi V8 continues to churn out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. Like other 2013 SRT8s, the 392 benefits from the institution of a new launch control system and a re-tuned three-mode adaptive suspension.

The 392 package will make for a rare beast - just 392 examples are planned between the 2013 and 2014 model years, with dealers slated to begin taking orders in April. Interested? Ordering your SRT8 with 392 limited-edition frosting will come at an additional cost on top of the current SRT8's $45,845 base price.

In related news, Chrysler also used Irvine's LX Fest to test the waters of a 300 SRT Concept which featured a non-metallic paint trimmed by blacked-out mirror caps, taillamps and window surrounds. The Black Vapor Chrome wheels have also been given a matte finish. While purely a concept for the moment, we'd be shocked if something like this didn't show up in dealers sooner rather than later.

Ram Runner

An argument could be made that Chrysler already offers a competitor to the much-loved Ford Raptor in the form of the Ram Runner pickup. The difference, though, is that Ford builds the Raptor right on the production line, whereas Ram requires the buyer to have modifications made at one of its dealerships after the initial purchase is made.

That distinction may soon be a thing of the past, according to a report from Wards Auto. "If we could see that the volume was significant enough that it makes sense to do it, we'll do it," says Pat Dougherty, vice president of Mopar parts, sales and field operations. "But if we don't, then we'll continue to do it the way we do it."

Additionally, Chrysler would reportedly like to put more emphasis on the fuel efficiency of its off-road-ready lineup, which is spearheaded by the Jeep Wrangler. Says Dougherty, "For a lot of the people who go off-roading (but) actually drive their vehicle as a daily driver, they want to make sure they're getting fuel efficiency while they're driving to work."

Hemingway's Chrysler New Yorker Convertible

The last car Ernest Hemingway ever owned was a 1955 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible. After the legendary writer shot himself in 1961, the car effectively vanished from public view. Unbeknownst to the rest of the world, the convertible was in Cuba getting passed around between the members of one family. Some 50 years after Hemingway died, a determined writer unearthed the car and began the labourious process of restoring it to its former glory. Here in North America, that would be as simple as calling up the local parts store and doing some quick ordering, but the US trade embargo against Cuba put a crimp in that plan.

The documentary Cuban Soul follows writer David Soul as he attempts to overcome the embargo and get the car back on the road with more than a little help from the ingenious craftsmen on the island. The project is in need of generous supporters, so head over to the Red Earth Studio site to learn how you can lend a hand.

2013.5 Chrysler 200 S Special Edition - front three-quarter view

The Chrysler 200 will be getting a complete redesign for the 2014 model year, and as a last hurrah for the current model, Chrysler plans to unveil this sporty-looking version of the sedan at the New York Auto Show. Chrysler and Carhartt, a clothing company headquartered in the Detroit area, are already collaborating on a new "Imported from Detroit" fashion line, and now the two companies are working together to create the 2013.5 Chrysler 200 S Special Edition.

Starting off with the S package that already includes darker headlight- and taillight- housings, this new styling package actually does a pretty good job spicing up the 200's lines with more aggressive front and rear fascias, platinum exterior accents, body-colour rocker panel extensions and gloss black 18-inch wheels. The new front fascia will have a lower chin spoiler and a mesh black grille that features Chrysler's logo prominently centered (standard 200 models feature the logo in the top edge of the grille). Matching the look of the front end, Chrysler has improved the rear styling of the 200 with a decklid spoiler and a fascia that includes a blacked-out diffuser and integrated dual exhaust outlets.

Inside is where Carhartt has contributed, with black, water-resistant fabric on the seats, while other upgrades include numerous gray or black trim pieces replacing most of the 200's shiny chrome bits. The 2013.5 Chrysler 200 S Special Edition goes on sale in the US shortly after its New York introduction, and it will have a starting price of US$28,870 (excluding destination charge). Unfortunately, we haven't heard of any plans in place to bring it to Canada.

2013 Chrysler 200 - front three-quarter view

Autoweek reports the next Chrysler 200 will bow early next year. CEO Sergio Marchionne has said the 2015 model will debut next January, and Chrysler plans to cut the 2014 200 model year short to make way for the model's successor. According to AW, internal documents reveal 2014 model production will start this July and run through early January, 2014. The memos don't specify whether its Dodge Avenger twin will also see a shortened model year (the latter was originally rumoured for discontinuation, but a successor is apparently back on the table). Chrysler is investing some US$1 billion to construct paint and body facilities at its Sterling Heights, Michigan plant for the next-generation 200.

From what we've heard so far, we can expect the 2015 200 to bring a new design language to the Chrysler brand that will eventually bleed into the automaker's other products. Early reports have also suggested the four door will boast a nine-speed automatic transmission and return up to 6.2 L/100km (38 mpg).

Chrysler executed a very successful facelift in 2011, turning the flailing Sebring into the newly minted 200. Buyers responded enthusiastically, with sales jumping 44 per cent in 2012. That step up was enough to make the 200 the brand's best-selling car. The momentum hasn't slackened, either, with sales up 21 per cent during the first two months of this year.
