According to a report from Reuters, South Korea's government has drafted strict new rules for automakers to follow when calculating fuel economy. The legislation comes after a major snafu by Hyundai and Kia that resulted in the automakers changing the estimated fuel mileage rating of many popular models, including the Soul subcompact above - and compensating owners in the US and Canada for the reduction in fuel efficiency.

The new fuel economy rules were announced by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in South Korea and will see average mileage ratings worsen by roughly three to five per cent, according to the report. In addition, manufacturers found guilty of overstating mileage figures will be liable for fines of up to US$900,000.

These sweeping new regulations will go into effect in the second half of 2013 and, while they won't have any effect on fuel estimates for Hyundai and Kia vehicles in North America, they are expected to result in new ratings for the two automakers in their home market of South Korea, where they enjoy a whopping 70 per cent market share.

Edmunds reports the 2015 Hyundai Genesis Sedan will bow at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show next January. As expected, the redesigned luxury four-door will reportedly offer buyers an all-wheel drive option for the first time as well as a more refined interior. The news that the Genesis will show up at Detroit comes courtesy of Brandon Ramirez, senior group manager of product planning with Hyundai Motor America, though the executive stopped short of serving up any more details.

Edmunds points to "other sources" as saying the Genesis will receive a styling update in the same vein as the automaker's other Fluidic Sculpture design products. That may mean we'll see hints of the HCD-14 Genesis Concept in the final product, though the influence is likely to be pretty subtle if the spy shots above are any indication. The new model will also take a stab at improving both the machine's ride and handling as Hyundai continues to attempt to lure buyers away from brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Filed under: Hyundai, UK, Videos, Marketing/Advertising

We all know that sometimes ad agencies can miss the mark when it comes to what can be considered funny or tasteful, but this new ad by Hyundai is far an beyond the most revolting to date. The minute-long clip shows a distraught man sitting in his car with a hose running exhaust into the passenger cabin. After a while he realizes his car won't kill him, so he exits the car and goes back into the house. By comparison this bleak and far too realistic video makes Ford's recent bondage campaign look completely acceptable.

Innocean, Hyundai's in-house marketing agency who is responsible for the ad, and whose major clients also include Kia, Domino's Pizza, Canon, and Walt Disney, has yet to present any kind of defense for their work. The campaign originally went live on April 18th, and was meant to promote Hyundai's upcoming zero-emissions vehicle but instead has sparked outrage across the globe. So much so that a recently posted open letter to Hyundai and Innocean has rapidly rocketed to beyond 50,000 views and counting.

We are not ones to shy away from comedy even when it can be in bad taste, but there is a clear and defined line that sits a ways north of humour about taking ones own life. As much as Hyundai's spokespeople can say things like "Hyundai understands that the video has caused offence. We apologize unreservedly. The video has been taken down and will not be used in any of our advertising or marketing.", the damage is already done and it will be long before folks forget this one.

The so-called Hyundai Mini-Sonata now has a proper name. Called the Mingtu in China, this new sedan will slot in between the compact Elantra and midsize Sonata, and it sports a pretty nifty look.

We've known for a while now that Hyundai is working on a more mature version of its Fluidic styling language, the first fruits of which showed up in the latest Santa Fe, and the Mingtu seems to take that refined appearance to the next level with a refined look of creased lines, a chiseled fascia and a smooth greenhouse.

There's no indication that this car will be offered in the Canadian market, but it's certainly possible that some of its styling elements will carry over to the next Elantra or Sonata. In any case, expect a range of 1.8- and 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines to be announced for the Chinese market when the Mingtu makes its official debut at the Shanghai Motor Show this weekend.

My wife and I are holdouts among our friends and family in the offspring department. Our heir-free lifestyle, however, affords us the opportunity to travel this great land, and road trips are our favourite. So while I'm unqualified to remark on how well the new 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport will swallow an infant son and stroller, I can pass judgment on this two-row crossover's talents for carrying people and cargo over great distances.

The lady and I recently drove a new 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport to one of this country's national treasures: the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. The Biltmore was built between 1889 and 1895 by George Vanderbuilt, grandson of Cornelius Vanderbuilt who was one of this country's earliest captains of industry. Despite the Biltmore being the largest privately owned home in the United States, which it remains to this day with a footprint of 16,623 square metres (178,926 square feet), George and his wife, Edith, only ever had one child. A family of two parents plus one child would have made the Vanderbuilts exactly the type of people Hyundai hopes to attract with this two-row Santa Fe Sport - George's eldest brother, Cornelius II, had seven children and would've had better luck fitting his brood in the larger three-row Santa Fe (sans the "Sport" suffix).

Like George, the all-new Santa Fe Sport is now the youngest in a large family of redesigned Hyundais that have been pushing the Korean brand's sales ever higher. Being last in a line of overachievers has its advantages, as this new Santa Fe Sport comes to market with the brand's latest design, technology and safety features, all of which it needs to compete in a midsize crossover segment that is more crowded and competitive than perhaps any other.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 18 Apr 2013 12:00:00 EST.
The launch of the next-generation Hyundai Genesis is drawing closer and closer, and this latest set of spy shots gives us our best look yet at the Korean automaker's new luxury sedan. Caught testing on the Nürburgring, we're not only getting a better look at the finer details of the Hyundai's exterior, but this set of photos gives us a clear view inside the cockpit, as well.

For its new generation, the Hyundai Genesis appears to be moving a bit more upmarket in terms of materials and layout, with a redesigned steering wheel, gauge cluster and center stack. The current car's analog clock appears to be left intact, smack dab in the middle of the heating and cooling controls, but the rest of the updates look decidedly more modern and, if we're honest, a bit German.

Outside, it's obvious that the new Hyundai will wear a more aggressive front fascia, along with what appears to be a more rakish rear deck. Earlier reports have stated that the next Genesis sedan will be much lighter than the current car, and with a much more sporty tune to the suspension. We'll know more when the car is officially revealed, though it's still unclear exactly when that will be.

Step inside just about any new car these days and you'll quickly see that vehicle interiors have become a pretty nice place to spend some time in. For the third consecutive year, WardsAuto sat in each and every new vehicle that had received redesigned or updated interiors, and it has now named its top 10 Best Interiors.

Judges look at everything from design and fit-and-finish to comfort, safety and technology. Some of the standout selections include budget cars like the Chevrolet Spark and Kia Forte all the way up to more expensive luxury sedans like the Cadillac XTS and Lexus GS450h. An interesting note here is that WardsAuto praises Cadillac for its CUE infotainment system while Consumer Reports generally lambasts the system. Asian automakers definitely won the contest for nicest interiors as the list is comprised of five Japanese automakers and two South Korean, with Toyota and General Motors in a dead heat with the most number of cars on the list with two each.

Hyundai has held an IDEA festival for the past three years that gives its engineers a break from seat belts, and electrical harnesses and wheel arch moldings. Each festival serves up a theme for personal mobility, after that there's no limit - competing teams can come up with anything that serves the theme and are encouraged to get creative.

That's how you get concepts like the E4U 'egg car' (pictured); a single-stander mode of transportation that channels Mork from Ork. The oddest thing about the egg is not the yellow shell but the helmet the 'driver' wears. Other ideas included a flying car with 16 (!) rotors, a bicycle that could serve as a spare tire and a car with five joints. Although most appeared totally impractical, all were totally cool.

This year's festival is in the works, the theme being the rather ambiguous "R&D for customers," the point is apparently to come up with concepts that Hyundai customers might actually use. There's a video with scenes of last year's festival and a press release below (our vote goes to the Pandora).

Hyundai hit a home run with its current-generation Sonata midsize sedan, so don't expect the Korean automaker to make revolutionary changes when its replacement comes out for the 2015 model year. The four-door sitting in showrooms today was launched in 2010 with radical new lines that marked a big departure from its rather bland predecessor. Even with stiff competition from the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry - all newer designs than the Sonata - sales have been strong. Consumers embraced its new design language as evidenced by very strong sales numbers across North America.

"I think we found a design language that works, the 'Fluidic Sculpture' stuff, so I would say (the new styling) is not pulling back in any way. It's more continuing to refine on that same trajectory that we're on," John Krafcik, Hyundai U.S. CEO, told WardsAuto in a recent interview. Consumers don't seem to be fazed by the its age either. "A lot of consumers are just entering (the) midsize (segment) for the first time. They don't see (the Sonata) as a three-year-old car. They see it as, 'Whoa, that's a pretty good-looking midsize car,' so it's doing quite well," added Krafcik.

Sonota sales have been down over the last few months, but Krafcik says that is a reflection of the automaker's decision to increase production of its Elantra compact at the Montgomery, Alabama, plant - where both are built - causing a limited supply of its mid-grade GLS Sonata model.

Automotive News reports Hyundai may be considering jumping into the pickup truck market. Lee In-cheol, vice president of international sales, says the company's product planners and engineers are currently trying to determine what size pickup would be best for our market. Currently, the automaker has no plans to build a truck, but Lee says that hasn't stopped dealers from asking the company to produce one.

Although Hyundai hasn't fully committed to entering into North America's full-size pickup market, the company may build a smaller truck designed to compete in emerging markets. We've been hearing word about Hyundai's pickup musings for years now, including a rumoured partnership with Chrysler to produce Ram-based trucks, but so far, nothing has come of it.

Hyundai has unwrapped the HND-9 Sports Coupe Concept at the 2013 Seoul Motor Show. The design study is intended to give the world a glimpse at what Hyundai has planned for the look of its future products - an evolution of the automaker's current Fluidic Sculpture design language.

With classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive proportions, the HND-9 looks great, and engineers graced the concept with a 3.3-litre turbocharged, direct-injection engine good for 364 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission shuttles that thrust to the rear wheels, while touches like butterfly doors give the machine a bit of flair.

Indoors, the HND-9 features seats built with a special mesh that changes colours depending on the viewer's angle. Designers modeled the cabin after a cockpit for a close, sporty feel.
Hyundai isn't horsing around with the Equus, its premium luxury sedan offering for the 2014 model year. As stated in the automaker's press release, "Equus is the number-one shopped premium luxury sedan, well ahead of Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, Lexus LS, and Jaguar XJ."

We're not entirely certain what "number-one shopped" means, but regardless, that's some serious company to be rubbing elbows with. Hyundai is seeking to draw even more people into its showrooms to cross-shop the Equus with those German, Japanese and British rivals by issuing the car's first major update since it was debuted at the New York Auto Show in 2009.

Not a stone was left unturned in this comprehensive refresh, with the exterior, interior, powertrain and chassis all receiving updates for the new year. Most noticeably on the outside, the 2014 Equus gets a new fascia that includes a restyled grille, along with standard LED fog lamps. Inside, the changes are more drastic and include a brand-new instrument cluster and center stack to go along with "ultra-premium genuine wood trim."

Drivers are sure to note the expanded technology inside, which includes either a 18 cm or 31.2 cm (7- or 12.3-inch) LCD screen in the instrument cluster and a 23.4 cm (9.2-inch) display in the center of the dash. Rear-seat passengers are treated to redesigned center console controls, plus power lumbar support and dual 23.4 cm (9.2-inch) monitors.

Hyundai claims to have improved both ride comfort and handling by rejiggering the suspension bits, and a Sport mode has been added. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels are standard. The 5.0 litre direct-injected Tau V8 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission carry over from 2012, but with 429 naturally aspirated horsepower on tap, we don't consider that a bad thing.

There's plenty more detail to be found in the press release below, but first we suggest you scroll through our live image gallery above.

Automotive News reports Hyundai is set to give its sales strategy for premium vehicles a once-over. Moving forward, each of the automaker's five North American regions will have a premium product operations manager. Those managers will all report directly to a senior group manager based at the Hyundai headquarters in California. To begin with, the group will start by identifying what dealers are currently doing right to sell the automaker's luxury hardware. From there, the group will then help spread those practices to the dealerships currently authorized to sell the Equus.

The move comes ahead of the launch of the second-generation Genesis and Equus. Both sedans are slated to hit showrooms by early next year. The Genesis debuted in 2008 with the Genesis Coupe following along in 2009, while the Equus first landed on our shores in 2011.

Click through to watch the Equus aim far above its intended target market and face off against the Bentley Mulsanne.

Hyundai has dropped a couple of rendered looks at its forthcoming HND-9 luxury sports coupe concept, which will debut at the 2013 Seoul Motor Show. While full details probably won't be released until then, the Korean automaker has said the butterfly-doored machine will bow with a direct-injection, turbocharged 3.3-litre V6 engine good for around 365 horsepower. The mill is bolted to an eight-speed automatic transmission and puts its grunt to the rear tires. While the doors are pure showcar theater, we dig the Aston-inspired long nose and boisterous rear haunches.

Look for the car to receive an actual introduction on March 28, and while we don't expect to see the HND-9 on showroom floors any time soon, some of the creation's design language may make it to production models.

This may sound strange, but bear with us - there is indeed a point to this little exercise. Okay, ready? We'd like you to close your eyes and imagine a crossover. Any modern crossover is fine.

Done? Good. Recall what you saw in your mind's eye. What did it look like? Did it have a somewhat aggressive shape - an upright greenhouse, pronounced wheel wells with some type of body cladding, a bold grille up front bracketed by large headlamps and hulking bodysides with a bit of visual flair provided by creases or rising shoulder lines? Did it sit jacked up a tad on oversized alloy wheels, distancing itself from any thoughts of mere station wagons? Yep, that was a crossover all right.

Point being, there isn't all that much to differentiate today's crop of car-based utility vehicles, at least when it comes to visuals and overall impressions, which means, to use a somewhat tired phrase, the devil is in the details. Clearly, what makes a family choose one over another has a lot to do with their individual wants and needs, and each automaker is building a vehicle (or two, or three) designed to appeal to these masses, but with ever-so-slightly differing formulas.

It was with all these thoughts swirling through our minds that we accepted an invitation to drive the new three-row 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe in San Diego, California for a full day of highways, twisty roads and ocean breezes. We were rewarded mostly with confirmation of our preconceived notions, but also with a few genuinely surprising details designed to attract the eyes and wallets of buyers all across North America.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe XL

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe XL originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Mon, 18 Mar 2013 11:57:00 EST.
A very strange story out of China is causing quite a stir, as Hyundai and a Chinese Buick dealer were forced to face allegations of using allusions to an infamous child murder on a social media website as a way of promoting the safety features of their respective vehicles.

The original sad tale goes something like this: On March 4, a man reported to police that he had left his infant child in a running Toyota RAV4 while he ran into a supermarket briefly. When he came back out, the vehicle and the child were gone.

Later in the week a suspect turned himself in to the police; confessing to them that he had stolen a sport-utility vehicle, strangled the infant that was in it, and then buried the child in the snow.

For the rest of the story, click past the jump.
Continue reading Chinese baby social media incident triggers Hyundai, Buick dealer apology

Chinese baby social media incident triggers Hyundai, Buick dealer apology originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 14 Mar 2013 17:15:00 EST.
A late night drive took a turn for the worse, as a single car crash destroyed an astonishing 18 vehicles at a Hyundai dealership in Austin, TX. At least nine cars suffered severe damage, as the crash carnage tore the roofs off several vehicles and left a few flipped on their side, upside down and even on top of one another.

The unbelievable trail of destruction has been elaborately estimated at a whopping $700,000 so far, but we question that math given your "average" Hyundai product doesn't exactly add up to a $40,000 luxury car and a few cars involved suffered only minor scratches.

According to reports (and this video clip), the driver crash landed their vehicle into a long row of brand new cars sitting at the Hyundai dealership lot after allegedly losing control and hitting a light pole in front of South Point Hyundai at high speed.

Police are looking for the man responsible as witnesses say they watched the driver crawl out of his car and run off after the crash. The driver is facing several potential charges, as officers who responded to the scene say they found empty beer bottles inside and around the driver's car.

Oddly enough, three similar car crash incidents have happened at other dealerships along the same stretch of the I-35, causing damage to a Mazda dealership right next door after a driver rammed into their pre-owned car lot over a year ago.

It looks as if Land Rover isn't the only company looking to show a little metal ahead of the 2013 New York Auto Show. Hyundai has dropped a pair of videos detailing the facelifted 2014 Equus ahead of the luxury sedan's official debut. New adaptive LED headlamps are matched with redesigned LED taillamps, along with new 18-inch alloy wheels at all four corners (19s are optional). Buyers will get to enjoy a card-type smart key and a shift-by-wire gear change indoors. More importantly, the vehicle's forward cabin is now dominated by a 9.2-inch screen mounted in the center of the dash.

The old analog gauges have also gone by the wayside in favour of a new TFT LCD display. Mechanically, the 2014 Equus will continue to offer a standard 3.8-litre V6 engine or an optional 5.0-litre V8, depending on the market. The vehicle can be configured with a total of three driving modes, including Normal, Snow and Sport, which can adjust multiple systems, including the vehicle's electronic dampers.
The digital ink has yet to dry on some of our Geneva Motor Show coverage, and we're already shifting gears getting ready for the upcoming New York Auto Show. To help get us in the New York state of mind, Hyundai has released this shadowy image hinting at the refreshed 2014 Equus that it will be unveiling at the end of the month at NYC's Javits Center.

While we can't make out any major changes in this single image, Hyundai promises at least 30 updates to its flagship sedan including improvements to styling, cabin materials and ride and handling as well as advancements in advanced safety features and "driver technology displays." If we had to guess, the latter sounds like it might be something along the lines of a digital, reconfigurable gauge cluster.

The only major difference we can actually see in this image are the new multi-spoke wheels, but we're sure Hyundai will be dropping some more hints before the official introduction on March 27.

In places that aren't North America, Hyundai calls its Tucson compact crossover the ix35. And as part of its Geneva Motor Show presence, the Korean automaker has debuted this freshened version of the C-segment CUV, showing some minor tweaks to an otherwise attractive package.

The most noticeable changes are found up front, where a revised grille slots in between newly designed headlamps that now feature LED running lights. Around back, the taillamps have also been given the nip/tuck treatment, and it appears some redesigned wheels have been included in this update, as well.

Hyundai has fitted its ix35 with a new, direct-injected version of its 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine (with undisclosed power figures, natch). And when it comes time to put that power to the road, driver's will be able to use a new selectable electric power steering system similar to what's on the Elantra GT and Santa Fe Sport, with normal, comfort and sport modes.

We have yet to receive official word about when the US-spec Tucson will receive these changes, but we don't expect them to be too far off. Scroll down for the full press blast with all the goods.

2013 Hyundai ix35 is a freshened-up Euro-Tucson originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 06 Mar 2013 11:29:00 EST.
