Earlier this year, BMW and Toyota confirmed a four-part joint venture mostly focusing on increasing improving vehicle efficiency using fuel cells, lightweight materials and better battery technology. Also tucked into the announcement was a "feasibility study" for a shared platform to underpin a future midsize "sports vehicle."

In terms of the latter, it seems that things have stepped up from the feasibility stage to the conceptual stage, as Motor Trend reports we could see a pair of new sports car concepts debut later this year in at the Tokyo Motor Show. There isn't much information about the new program, but the article suggests the sports cars could be all-wheel drive hybrids, with electric motors powering the front wheels and a gas engine powering the rear wheels. While a partnership between Toyota and BMW might not lend itself to a catchy portmanteau like "Toyobaru," here's to hoping it will bear fruit that is as exciting as the ones produced by the Toyota/Subaru tie up.

Honda must really love Formula One racing, as evidenced by today's announcement that the Japanese automaker is returning to the world's most popular motorsport for the fifth time in its history. Honda has entered into a team partnership with McLaren to develop and manufacture power systems - the engine and energy recovery system - for the 2015 F1 season. McLaren will be in charge of chassis development and running the day-to-day operations of this newly formed team, which will be called McLaren Honda.

Honda says its decision to re-enter F1 racing had to do with new regulations for the 2014 season that require cars to be powered by a 1.6-litre direct-injection turbocharged V6 engine paired with an energy recovery system. Apparently the chance to develop this particular powertrain for F1 racing was too enticing for Honda to pass up, which suggests it has bigger plans for the knowledge learned while developing these systems beyond just winning races.

As mentioned, this is Honda's fifth foray into F1 racing, the first being back in 1964 when it participated as its own team through 1968. Its longest stint came from 1983-1992 as an engine supplier, during which time it partnered with many teams, including McLaren, and won six Constructor Championships. Honda then returned from 2000-2005 as an engine supplier for British American Racing (BAR) before buying that team outright and running it as Honda Racing from 2006-2008. Then the global economic crisis hit. Honda's return to the sport will surely be welcomed by fans as its partnership with McLaren should produce a formidable team. It's a strong signal that the company has returned to health after a few tumultuous years, and hopefully its rediscovered motorsports mojo will help yield more passionately engineered street cars.

Infiniti makes plenty of good cars, crossovers and SUVs. The premium Japanese brand also has a well-defined presence in racing on the world's largest stage in the form of a partnership with Red Bull in Formula 1. What Infiniti doesn't have, though, is a range-topping halo car.

A report from Autocar in the UK suggests that Infiniti's gaping top-shelf hole may soon be plugged by 2016 with a new hybrid sports car along the lines of the well-received Emerg-E and Essence concepts. This report is contrary to news we heard from Autocar late last year, when company officials reportedly told the publication that a swoopy and fuel-efficient machine like the Emerg-E wouldn't be produced.

Interestingly, Infiniti is said to sense strong demand from so-called "little emperors ... who are used to getting what they want," many of whom live in Asian countries, who are also environmentally conscious. Infiniti exec Andy Palmer told Autocar to expect something "like the Tesla sports car option, but with more flexibility in terms of range."

Reading between the lines, we picture a luxurious coupe with some combination of electric motors and gasoline engines providing power levels between 400 and 500 horsepower. We may not qualify as "little emperors" ourselves, but we certainly welcome the notion of high-performance machines that also happen to be fuel efficient.

It pains us to show you this footage as there've been plenty of exotic cars bent up in recent months - but we bring you this video to serve as a sobering reminder to those of us who carve up racetracks that our craft is, indeed, dangerous.

Shigeru Terajima, a professional racer, crashed his Ferrari 458 Challenge on the Suzuka Circuit during the second race of the Ferrari Challenge series he was participating in. It's unclear what caused the crash, but it looks as though Terajima may have been attempting to pass another car down the high-speed straight when he lost control, either due to contact made with the other car, or perhaps due to squirrely weight transfer.

It's been reported that Terajima was sent to hospital with serious injuries; thankfully, he did survive the crash. A track worker was also injured in the crash and was sent to the same hospital as the driver, but thankfully his injuries were minor.

The Mercedes-Benz G550 Night Edition is the latest to join the queue of limited-edition vehicles lined up for some those living on the island of Japan. Following closely on the wheels of the Japan-only C63 AMG Special Edition, the all-Nippon version of the G-Class is limited to 100 exclusive units and will only be shown at the Mercedes-Benz Connection in Roppongi - the swanked-up, nightlife district of Tokyo.

Buyers will get a G550 in Obsidian Black with fenders from the G63 AMG hovering over dark-finish, twin-five-spoke alloys. The interior can be optioned in either Classic Red or Porcelain White Designo. It will require 13,900,000 yen to be among the 100 (roughly $142,000 CAD), and if you're curious, it will roll into Roppongi on April 22.

Have you ever noticed how NBA basketball courts appear much larger, food appears much tastier, and cars appear much slower when watching TV? Visit an NBA game and you'll be shocked how small the court is, eat the burger pictured on the screen and you'll wish you hadn't, watch a Formula 1 race and you'll think you can handle an F1 car. Well, one of our Autoblog Canada friends is making his desire to go fast, a reality... in Japan!

Igor Sushko, is a 27 year race car driver who has been carving out a racing career in Japan after a rocky start with the Speed World Challenge series back in 2008 in the US. His latest ride is a GT500 Class Nissan GT-R in the Super GT series. The OGT Freescale GT-R was caught at Fuji Speedway in the video below appears astonishingly fast in the clip. This was it's first ever run and the car is now fully decorated in racing colours and decals for the Super GT season.

We'd love to get some seat time in this race-prepped track beast, but we'll have to "settle" for a run-of-the-mill stock Nissan GT-R for our racetrack exploits. Until then, check out the video clip of the first shakedown pass of this new entry in GT500.
Continue reading Shakedown of OGT Freescale Nissan GT-R at Fuji Speedway

Shakedown of OGT Freescale Nissan GT-R at Fuji Speedway originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Mon, 22 Apr 2013 15:45:00 EST.
From the same guys who brought us video of a street-legal Porsche 962C driving through the streets of Japan comes this latest video showing Le Mans-winning pro driver, Seiji Ara, lapping Fuji Speedway in a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport. Most of the video centres around Ara's impressions, but there is plenty of great video showing the supercar carving up the track's numerous turns and blasting along its lengthy front straightaway.

Ara says this is the most powerful car he's ever driven, so we imagine it was as much fun for him to drive as it is for us to watch. During the drive, the camera provides a sense of what it's like to pilot the Veyron on such a challenging track, and you can hear its turbos and wastegates getting a workout. Scroll down to watch this well-shot, well-edited video of Ara and the Veyron lapping Fuji Speedway. Oh, and be sure to stick around for the end, as there's a bonus three-way drag race you won't want to miss.

Finally, after you've enjoyed all of the above, scroll to the very bottom to watch our Autoblog Short Cuts video with the Veyron.

The team from The Dashboard recently stopped by the Nissan Technical Center in Japan for a look at what exactly goes into creating a full-scale clay model. While automakers have been using clay bucks for decades, designers and engineers are now combining computer renderings and hand-sculpted clay models to determine how a new vehicle will look in our world. Engineers use specially formulated clay kept warm in an oven to bring the body panels to life. They then coat the clay in a thin plastic film to add body colour for the final look.

By the time everything is said and done, workers may have hundreds of hours in the model's creation. So, what happens when the company no longer needs the buck? They get scrapped. Someone comes in and dismantles the whole creation. We presume that action is set to the wailing tears of everyone who had a hand in building the model.

Check out the video below for a closer look, then check out the video below, showing the Nissan GT-R facing off against its little (ugly) brother, the Juke R.
Aside from the renderings, there is no information about either the Honda or Acura concept vehicles, but we can tell that both are some sort of utility vehicle, be they of crossover or people-mover variety.

The text for both images indicates that both concepts show future products that will be launched in China, but there is no mention as to what other markets the automaker has planned for these vehicles. In addition to these two concepts, the NSX Concept and 2014 RLX from Acura will make their Chinese debuts, and Honda says it "will display models substantially identical to the mass-production version of the Concept C and Concept S." The Concept C will be a "middle-class" sedan built for China, and the Concept S, an MPV that will primarily serve China as well.

Honda showed off its Civic Tourer concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and at that time, we were told that a production version would be coming to market in the very near future. Obviously, the sleek lines of the concept car will be dumbed down slightly for consumers, but that doesn't mean the Civic wagon will be a bland machine. The Euro-spec Civic's angular front end looks like it will blend nicely with the rakish rump that we saw on the concept.

Our sources suggest that not only will the Civic Tourer be a class-leader in terms of cargo capacity, but it will likely be a pretty engaging car from behind the wheel, as well. Honda is hoping that the Tourer will account for roughly 20 per cent of all European Civic sales after it goes on sale.

Expect to see the production car debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September, with the first customers taking delivery in early 2014. In the meantime, have a look at the camouflaged swoopy wagon from all angles in our gallery above.

When a pair of Russian pilots wanted to set a local ice-speed record, they chose a stock Nissan GT-R for the task. Roman Rusinov, a Russian race car driver, and Andrey Leontjev, a Russian auto journalist, took Godzilla to Lake Baikal and ran it up to 294.8 kilometres per hour (182.8 miles per hour) across frozen stuff estimated to be 1.4 metres thick.

While the worldwide record of 330.69 km/h (205.48 mph) was set by Juha Kankkunen in a Bentley Supersports Convertible, the mark achieved by Rusinov and Leontjev establishes a new Russian record. Well done, boys. You can watch it all go down in the video below.

Nissan's got a big ol' show planned for its immersive space at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show where visitors will see, touch, hear and smell the Nissan world. Sitting among 20 offerings that include the GT-R, Quest, Murano and Teana will be the Friend-Me concept (pictured above), the first show car created with "key input" by Chinese designers at Nissan Design China in Beijing. Its USP is "Four seats, one mind connectivity" that promotes information sharing among all the occupants.

The Friend-Me has the "vibrant, young" Chinese demographic in mind, our guess being Nissan thinks there's no reason to stop the digital sharing just because you're sitting in a car. We'll find out on April 20 exactly what's being exchanged in the Friend-Me. Until then, there's a press release below with a little more info.

Automotive News reports Mazda is set to turn a profit for the first time in five years. The automaker is more dependent on exports from Japan than other automakers based in that country, and as a result, it has long suffered at the hands of a strong yen. But the currency has declined in value by some 16 per cent over the past six months and Mazda's shares have tripled in value to their highest level since 2008. Contrast this situation to a year ago when Mazda printed 1.22 billion new shares to raise cash. The move was equivalent to 70 per cent of the company's then-outstanding stock, and values tumbled to record lows as a result.
Now that the yen has fallen, Mazda operations in the US and Canada are more profitable and the company now projects it will earn around US$279 million for the next fiscal year. Automotive News says a one yen change against the American dollar can have a 9.1 per cent impact on Mazda operating profit compared to 4.7 per cent at Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries or 3.1 per cent at Toyota. Those automakers better insulate themselves from currency fluctuations with overseas manufacturing facilities.
Continue reading Mazda's first profit in five years in sight due to weak yen

Mazda's first profit in five years in sight due to weak yen originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Fri, 05 Apr 2013 13:30:00 EST.
Any Japanese car fan will tell you that the Nissan Skyline GT-R is amongst their all time favourites. And even if they aren't fans, they still respect the legendary Nissan for what it did on the streets and in motorsports. As the most winning Touring car of all time, R32 Skyline GT-Rs were on top of the podium in Japan Touring Car Championships (JTCC, now Super GT) for 29 consecutive races... spanning four years straight. The Group A cars caused a lot of trouble and as a result were restricted to the point where they couldn't maintain their dominance and by the time the R33 chassis showed up, the rest of the manufacturers had developed more competitive products.

We recently reported about a media outlet having seat time in the most famous GT-R of all time, the Calsonic car from 1990. While this was a Skyline aficionados treat, we've uncovered something else for the Nissan faithful, the STP Advan Group A race car is now up for sale. The first chassis to roll off the line, seeing the VIN plate read: BNR32-91-001 makes us swoon. The STP Advan GT-R was driven by Keiichi Tsuchiya for team Taisan between 1991-1993. Famous for his drifting antics here in North America, "Drift King" Keiichi was a contender on the track earning 3rd place on the podium and 5th overall back in 1991.

With 600ps (about 592 hp and a possible 650 at 23.5psi) the Group A GT-R was a weapon tipping the scales at 1,260kg (2,772-pounds). While it might not have had a weight advantage, it did have a technology advantage with ATTESA intelligent AWD operating as rear-wheel drive until the wheels slipped sending torque to the front. And just like the production cars, the STP Taisan GT-R had razor sharp all-wheel steering.

Editor's Note: While driving the Mitsubishi Evolution in the slush and snow of winter is a fine enterprise, photographing it in such conditions is usually not fruitful. That's why you'll notice a slight disparity between our wintry text and sunny, California-based photographs of the subject car. Rest assured, both the review vehicle and the photo car are of the same basic Evo GSR flavour.

It was a dreary, gray, barely sufferable winter morning. Temperatures hovering just over -1 degree Celsius allowed for snow or rain or some combination thereof at a moment's notice, and the thickly clouded sky hinted at dark secrets while promising nothing. I've never been a rally driver but I couldn't help but feel that this murky, imprecise day was good winter rally weather. I'll admit: I don't usually wake up and look out the window to judge which kind of racing would be best just then, but the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR delivered to my house the day before was colouring the mood of the hour; most of my thoughts ran to where I was going to drive it, when, and how fast.

The Evo sitting in my crumbling suburban driveway sounded like a rifle shot when I first turned the engine over at 5:00 AM - exhaust meted out in cranky blats every time I tiptoed on the throttle. I was up early on a winter's Saturday for a few reasons, number one being that I'm oddly inhabited by the insomniac spirit of an octogenarian for a 34-year-old, and I wake up even if I don't have to. Number two was all about the Mitsubishi.

A new report in from the website Club Lexus claims to have insider knowledge about a return to Formula One racing by Toyota, this time under the auspices of the Lexus brand. Toyota competed in F1 from 2002 through the 2009 season. That final year saw the team return competitive, if inconsistent in results, but the larger economic woes in the automotive market caused a decision to pull the plug.

Now, citing recent interviews with Toyota executives and insider sources, Club Lexus says that the move to re-enter F1 for the 2014 season is "all but finalized." The choice to go with the Lexus nameplate over Toyota makes some sense, too, considering the success that rival Infiniti has had in recent years through its partnership with Red Bull Racing. Further, the emerging Lexus identity as a performance car builder, with a strong background in hybrid vehicles could help the F1 move resonate with buyers.

A few technological factors and formula changes within F1 offer some credence to the Lexus rumour, too. F1 will increase the available capacity of KERS from 60kW to 120kW, a change that theoretically benefits the hybrid-savvy Toyota. What's more, 2014 will see a switch from the current 2.4-litre V8 engines to 1.6-litre turbocharged V6s. A Lexus team that goes racing in 2014 will be on a level playing field with the rest of the grid then, with all teams adjusting to and continuing to develop the new engines.
As a right hand drive vehicle owner, there is no shortage of public interest during my eight years in the club. Heck even if a JDM vehicle is bone stock, as long as you're sitting on the "right" side then you'll get attention of all kinds. But then you see an oddball creation like we've stumbled upon at Kijiji and well, that attention level goes off the charts.

The Zombie Disposal Vehicle you see here is actually a Japanese-spec Suzuki Carry. Every Japanese manufacturer offers these micro Kei cars whether for passengers or cargo and in this application, a bit of both considering there is already three <strike>live</strike> undead zombies in the back.

Used as a promo truck in Guelph, Ontario the owner is looking to move this custom zombie hauler. With a 50hp 3-cylinder motor, it isn't an ideal vehicle to take on Canadian highways since it only has top speed of 90 km/h making it not for everyone. But it does generate plenty of hype for those trying to promote a business, although we're not sure the cops will be cool with the 50mm Gatling gun mounted to the roof or the cache of weapons on the back even if they are just for show.

The Godzilla insanity continues with new Nissan GT-R updates because, well, fast is never fast enough. Since the GT-R's launch six years ago it has largely remained the same, save for a few technical tweaks here and there. The most substantial upgrades so far arrived in 2011 by way of engine modifications, boosting power all the way up to 545 horsepower from its original 480 Japanese ponies. The raw speed this car churns out is borderline bonkers - but GTChannel.com reports that even more performance is due to be squeezed out from this R35 monster.

According to alleged reports from insider sources, a new 2015 Nissan GT-R is to receive major updates including heavily revised styling and multiple performance tweaks. The current GT-R can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in only 2.8 seconds on a good run - the 2015 model is to improve upon this figure with at least a tenth shaved from its run to 60 mph (96 km/h).

As far as mechanical changes go, expect further engine modifications to bump engine power, as well as upgraded brakes and further suspension and aero tuning. The most significant change will be the way the 2015 GT-R swaps cogs - a new 7-speed dual clutch transmission is rumoured.

And the cherry on the top of this automotive treat? GT-R chief engineer and project manager, Kazutoshi Mizuno, is reported to be fixated on quicker Nürburgring times - the new target shaves three seconds off of Godzilla's current 7:18 best run.

They say all good things must come to an end, although we still wish it wouldn't apply to the loss of the legendary Lexus LFA supercar (which recently ended exactly two years after initial production began).

Luckily, a MotorTrend film crew was granted access to the LFA factory in Japan just weeks before the last Lexus was set to roll off the assembly line, as they gathered an amazing look at the impressive production and testing facility while still in full swing.

The video goes behind-the-scenes with designers, test drivers, engineers and even a few of the 170 hand-picked assembly line workers who handle parts manufacturing, assembly and painting for the LFA project.

Toyota's Lexus division officially built the very last LFA a few months ago at the company's Motomachi production facility and as we reported, the last LFA (#500) ever built was even dressed in rare Nürburgring Edition guise to mark the special occasion.
