A 20-year-old woman was killed in Edmonton, Alberta on Satuday, reports CTV News, in a freak accident resulting from a rollover during a Jeep demonstration. As part of a fundraising enthusiast event called "Jeeps Go Topless," the driver of one Jeep Wrangler drove up and onto the top of the tire of another.

CTV reports that the owner of the topmost Jeep then switched the vehicle off, posed for pictures and then dismounted from his vehicle. His movement off of the Jeep apparently caused it to tip over, crushing a woman who was on top of an adjacent vehicle. Edmonton police are currently investigating more fully what caused the parking lot accident to occur. Scroll below to watch the CTV News video report about this tragic incident.

According to a report on the Chrysler Communications Facebook page and one fairly grainy image of the production line, at around 11:00AM Eastern this morning, the one-millionth Jeep Wrangler JK will roll out of the company's Toledo assembly plant.

The third-generation or "JK" Jeep Wrangler has been around since the 2007 model year, and has obviously been more popular than ever. With a greater than ever number of trim levels, two-door and four-door Unlimited models and hardy off-roading Rubicon packages, the JK offers more to choose from than ever for those looking for something in a traditional Jeep. In fact, with the modern 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 powering it, the 2012 model year saw record sales.

With a model refresh due out for the Wrangler in 2015 (along with the likely addition of a diesel engine option), we expect that sales will continue to roll right along, too.

Chinese buyers will get their first live look at the 2014 Jeep Cherokee during the Shanghai Motor Show, but CarNewsChina is reporting that it will go by a different name - Ziyou Guan, which translates to "Liberty Light." The article states that the Jeep Liberty was never sold in China, but the iconic XJ Cherokee was sold and produced there as the Qinuoji (a phonetic translation of Cherokee).

The new Jeep Liberty Light will be built alongside the Fiat Viaggio (China's Fiat-badged version of the Dodge Dart) at the Guangzhou-Fiat plant, and the two models will share the same powertrains: a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder base engine paired to a five-speed manual or a dual-clutch transmission and a 2.4-litre four-cylinder (the base engine for the North American-spec 2014 Cherokee) as an optional engine. It doesn't sound like the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 will be offered in China.

We'll be on hand when the new Jeep debuts in Shanghai, so stay tuned to Autoblog this Friday night and Saturday for our live coverage of the show and click here for a closer look in our previous Jeep photo gallery and video below.

"Desperate times call for desperate measures," so the old adage goes. Knowing the type of death and destruction frequently caused by drunk drivers, a group of Windsor area motorists took the law into their own hands in a sort of automotive citizen's arrest.

Windsor police first learned of the drunk driving incident by way of a call that came in to their 911 police dispatch centre at 9:20 pm on December 15th, 2012. The flood of 911 calls kept coming in, with concerned motorists reporting the wayward car at different locations. One thread of consistency tied up all of the reports: a black Jeep was swerving from lane to lane without its headlights on, in the darkness of the night.

When police finally caught up with the drunk driver they found his Jeep surrounded by five cars, boxing him in so that he couldn't continue his inebriated joyride. The motorists who boxed him in had no doubt all seen and reported his driving, then followed him to give police updates about his whereabouts. When the opportunity arose, they banded together to stop the drunken action in its tracks.

This band of motorists' actions were vindicated when police found the 41-year-old driver of the black Jeep was very drunk indeed - blowing three times over the legal blood-alchohol limit. These good-samaritans risked their paint finish (drunk drivers have an affinity for smashing shiny things) to safeguard their community, and may have saved a few lives in the process. Way to go, Windsorites.

While most brands are busy showing off in New York, Jeep headed out to Moab for the Easter Jeep Safari with the company's fleet of 2013 concepts. This year saw the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk II, Wrangler Mopar Recon, Wrangler Stitch, Wrangler Sand Trooper II, Wrangler Flattop and Wrangler Slim Concepts tackle the rocks and sand, and Jeep was kind enough to bring along a camera crew to film the machines rolling over a few obstacles.

The result is the video below, though don't expect to see too much hardcore off road action. Instead, the quick clip features more than a few interviews with Jeep executives, including Jeep Head of Product Design Mark Allen, explaining what makes the Easter Jeep Safari so important.

You can check out the quick video clip below for yourself, and be sure to thumb through our galleries of the concepts as well.

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee inched its way onto the stage at the New York Auto Show today, proving that at least the "Trail Rated" version of the SUV is more than just a <strike>controversial</strike> <strike>unique</strike> <strike>odd</strike> fresh face in the mid-size segment. After the short, simulated Moab run by the Trailhawk model, the gray four-door was joined on the stage by a burgundy Limited model - the luxurious highway variant.

As a recap, the all-new 2014 Cherokee rides atop a modular Alfa Romeo-derived platform (we know it from the Dodge Dart) and will be offered in both front- and all-wheel drive models with a choice between a 2.4 litre four-cylinder (rated at 184 horsepower) and a new 3.2 litre Pentastar V6 (developing 271 horsepower) engine. A nine-speed automatic is standard and no less than three different all-wheel drive systems are available.

Of the four different models (Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk), we like the rugged looks and capabilities offered by the Trailhawk the best. Overlook the red tow hooks and check out its more aggressive wheel/tire package, flared fenders, reduced breakover angle and lack of brightwork in our gallery of live images from the New York show. Skid plates and off-road capable tires round out the package. Read all the details in the official press release below.

A report in The Wall Street Journal looks at some of the obstacles to the 2014 Jeep Cherokee that go beyond its moot yet "very contemporary" looks, almost all of them based on Fiat's financial position. Starting with that sheetmetal, in defense of it SRT president Ralph Gilles and Jeep design head Mark Allen said they wanted to "make sure the design still looks modern five years from now."

The WSJ piece doesn't cite longevity as a factor, instead saying that its features originated in a design for an Alfa Romeo, the transformation into a Jeep design meant allowing Chrysler get it to market more quickly and save "hundreds of millions of dollars" in engineering.

The need for Fiat to save money while it weathers the European situation has cut budgets for development, engineering and the pace of retooling the Toledo, Ohio plant to build the Cherokee. In a familiar case of snowballing at work, among the effects will be pushing back the Cherokee's volume sales date and delaying updates to some of Chrysler's other products.

Things will get better when Chrysler can work through its program and get the Cherokee to dealers in bulk - especially if it finds it really can sell 250,000 per year - but the hurdles won't help the financials in the short term.

Only slightly more than one month ago, undisguised (and less-than-flattering) shots of the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee were leaked online. Later that day, in an effort to suppress the uprising, Jeep countered with its own official photography offering us much clearer front and three-quarter views. We've been left to digest those pictures for weeks.

Now, mere hours before the fabric comes sliding off its newest mid-size sport-utility at its live reveal at the New York Auto Show, Jeep has released dozens of new images showing all four corners, plus a few interior shots, of its new Cherokee.

As we previously mentioned, the 2014 Cherokee rides atop a modular Alfa Romeo-derived platform (shared with the Dodge Dart). We've now also learned that the new Jeep will offer both front- and all-wheel drive with a choice between a 2.4-litre four-cylinder (184 horsepower) and a new 3.2-litre Pentastar V6 (271 horsepower) powerplant. A new nine-speed (!) automatic transmission, a first in this segment, is standard across the board. There will be four different models: Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk (right), with the most fuel efficient delivering 31 mpg EPA (7.6 L/100 km) on the highway, and the most rugged earning Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging while boasting Selec-Terrain and Active Drive Lock (locking rear differential), the latter being the most aggressive of the three separate all-wheel drive systems available.

The new front end is obviously its most controversial feature - a sculpted design that improves aerodynamic drag, promotes global appeal yet still retains the Jeep DNA and heritage with its seven-slotted iconic grille, says the automaker. Assembled in Toledo, Ohio, the new Cherokee arrives in showrooms later this year. For all of the details, get comfortable in your chair before checking out the lengthy press release below.

Continue reading 2014 Jeep Cherokee flaunts its new contemporary curves

2014 Jeep Cherokee flaunts its new contemporary curves originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 00:01:00 EST.
North Americans love their Jeeps, so much so that Jeep has upped the sales expectations. The plan is to greatly increase the production capacity at Jeeps Toledo North Assembly plant in Ohio in order to handle North American demand. The Detroit Free Press is reporting that there are big plans for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee and Toledo North, as a local union president has informed the newspaper that Chrysler is planning to produce around 250,000 examples of the new midsize utility per year.

To put this number into context, 250,000 units is more than what Jeep Liberty sales totaled here over the last three years combined. Even taking into consideration that the 250,000 units will be distributed beyond North American borders, that's an ambitious volume figure full-stop - and that's without taking into consideration the new Cherokee's love/hate design. In its favour, though, Jeep is making remarkable inroads globally as of late, and the Cherokee's size could work well in emerging markets. To get that kind of output from Toledo's Cherokee assembly line, Chrysler will reportedly hire 1,105 new workers - that's in addition to the 200 workers already being hired to build the popular Jeep Wrangler, which is itself expected to top 220,000 units this year.

Scroll down to watch the Cherokee's big brother Grand Cherokee diesel launch with oil-burning power at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

Jeep has unveiled its annual spate of concepts before the Easter Jeep Safari. Those start with the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Concept (below left), complete with the company's EcoDiesel V6 engine. Designers threw in a set of 35-inch Mickey Thompson tires wrapped around 17-inch Rubicon wheels, and a set of custom fender flares help keep all that rubber under wraps.

Meanwhile, the Wrangler Mopar Recon (below right) packs a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 good for 470 horsepower. All that grunt gets to the ground via a five-speed automatic transmission and a set of a Dana 60 axles front and rear with 4.10 gears. The Recon also makes use of a 4.5-inch prototype long-arm kit and a set of prototype eight-lug bead lock wheels.

The Wrangler Stitch (below left) builds on the momentum of the Wrangler Pork Chop Concept. Engineers once again set out to strike as much weight as possible from the vehicle, and actually managed to trim the curb weight down to 1,361 kilos (3,000 pounds). That effort has given the machine the same power to weight ratio as the Grand Cherokee SRT. Plenty of carbon fibre, door deletes and a chrome moly roll cage all help trim those pounds, and a set of DanyTrac Pro Rock 44 axles with 4.88 gears and ARB lockers front and rear let this machine scramble over whatever is in its path.

The Wrangler Sand Trooper II (very top) gets its grunt from a 5.7-litre Hemi and puts all 400 pound-feet of torque to the ground via a set of eight-lug portal axles. That hardware allows the Sand Trooper II to run 40-inch tires.

Jeep took a different approach with the Wrangler Flattop (above middle), however. With an upscale appearance, the Flattop boasts a chopped windowless hard top that shortens the machine in height by a full two inches. Designers also cut out the B pillar for a massive side opening. Katzkin leather seating indoors helps offer up a bit more refinement, and the Warn Zeon winch and 37-inch Mickey Thompson tires give the rig some added capability off road.

Finally, the Wrangler Slim (above right) is likely the most accessible of the whole bunch, showing off exactly what can be built out of a Wrangler with a little patience on a budget. The Slim features a 3.6-litre V6, axles with a 3.73 ratio, 17-inch prototype wheels and a 10th-Anniversary Rubicon front bumper. Rock rails and a two-inch lift help get the Slim off the ground.

Check the full press release below for more information on all six rigs.

When a stalwart choice of SUV buyers make significant changes, the public takes note. We can say with confidence the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee moves were calculated, deliberate and were aimed squarely at grabbing more market share in a sector where Jeep was once one of the few choices. Now with a wealth of formidable foes, the legendary Grand Cherokee had to address and meet the growing needs of today's consumers. It's safe to say that all of the changes for the 2014 model year will cover the requirements of nearly every SUV buyer. The new engine offerings, driveline technology, trim levels and each of their distinct styling will tailor each Jeep Grand Cherokee to the buyer more than ever before.

The most obvious departure from your average Grand Cherokee, is the SRT model. We reviewed the 470 hp machine and walked away from the Circuit of the Americas after our track test very much impressed. Despite it's great value at the $62,995 selling price (same as US MSRP), the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT will not be the breadwinner, so we tested the various engines and trims the day before on the back roads and then off those roads into the desert.
Continue reading 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 19 Mar 2013 13:15:00 EST.
Canadians love their Jeeps. So it comes as good news that sales are strong in North America since strong sales equate to a long future for the vehicle. Chrysler is betting that the Jeep Wrangler will continue its strong sales surge as it continues to push the legendary brand out across the globe. The Auburn Hills automaker is reportedly adding 200 workers at the Toledo, Ohio plant that builds the Wrangler. What's more, those new hires will be at their posts quickly - they'll be on the job by April 1. Of those 200 workers, 130 employees will be there to relieve those who need breaks.

Why do they need so many relief workers? The Toledo Jeep Complex is currently working at a torrid pace with two ten-hour shifts. A third shift has been ruled out for the moment because of a production botttleneck - the plant's paint shop is already maxed out. According to Reuters, Wrangler production in 2012 cleared 200,000 units, and US sales were up by 16 per cent.

Another part of the Toledo plant is presently down as Chrysler retools the line to build Jeep's divisively styled Liberty replacement, the Cherokee. Production for the new model is scheduled to begin toward the end of May.

Yes, we have just driven a Jeep on an F1 track. It wasn't so long ago a sentence like that would have made zero sense. And even if it did happen, we can't imagine it being much fun, or safe for that matter. However, Jeep recently booked the Circuit of the Americas, the stunning new Formula One track in Austin, TX to test their wares, namely the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT.

Notice we said "SRT" and not SRT8 because as SRT boss Ralph Gilles so prominently pointed out "there are no guarantees there will always be a V8 in there." (Well played Ralph) Gilles also went on to boast that the tweaks made to the new Grand Cherokee SRT are much more than sheet metal and distinctive design cues. Upon first glance, one might think that the 2014 Grand Cherokees aren't much different than the outgoing models, but this is a very much improved effort. Each trim receives distinctive headlights, different front fascia and rear bumper treatment. For the 2014 SRT, we find slightly scaled down blackened headlights, revised tails along with subtle tweaks to the design. There is also a new slab-style polished 5-spoke wheel to choose from if the "spider monkey" style wheels aren't your thing, although they work for us.

Underneath the skin, the new SRT gets serious. We find an upgraded LSD, new launch control with much better performance numbers across the board. If the outgoing model was an improvement over the original, this 2014 caught us completely off guard. Performance aside, the interior also sends messages to your brain that you are not in a Chrysler product of yesteryear complete with gobs of carbon fibre and an impressive steering wheel that is as Gilles states, "one of the best wheels you will find today."

Marketing speak aside, we wanted to dive into the SRT and click off some hot laps on this outstanding track. After a short jaunt on Texas roads, we did just that for several glorious hours.

What in the world is the vehicle you see above? Well, um... yeah. We have no idea. According to the video description from YouTube, however, it's a modified Jeep Wrangler, and it comes from the same person who created the equally insane side-by-side merged Wrangler you saw here.

We can clearly make out the Wrangler-shaped passenger compartment up top, but as for the other bits and pieces that make up this rather amazing machine, your guess is as good as ours. At the very least, it seems to us that the car's wheelbase has been given a significant stretch, and the grille may have come from an International semi truck (but not this one, also modified in its own way).

We automotive journalists aren't always the right people to ask about whether a vehicle should or should not be offered with a diesel powertrain (hint: the answer is usually "YES"). But when it comes to the iconic, off-road-ready Jeep Wrangler, we aren't the only ones who have been clamoring for an oil-burning engine behind that famous seven-slat grille. To that end, it appears there's good news on the horizon, as Jeep CEO Mike Manley recently told Ward's Auto that the "Wrangler is on the radar to get (a) diesel."

"I'm confident that the Grand Cherokee will show just how large a demand there is for diesel, and I think what that will do is reinforce the need for us to target Wrangler as a vehicle that can take a diesel," Manley told Ward's. The most rugged of Jeeps is scheduled to get an overhaul around 2015-16, and the diesel powertrain will likely be introduced around that time.

This year alone, Chrysler will be adding a diesel engine to the Grand Cherokee SUV, as well as the Ram 1500 pickup and Promaster utility van.

It's unclear if the Wrangler will get a new diesel engine or if Chrysler will use one of its existing oil-burners. The Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 will be powered by the new 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6, while the Ram Promaster uses a less-powerful 3.0-litre four-cylinder. In Europe, the Wrangler currently uses a 2.8-litre diesel V6, which we've had the chance to test (and enjoy). Of course, we won't get too excited until the ink has dried on an official announcement, but for now anyway, things are certainly looking good.
Continue reading Jeep Wrangler diesel likely after 2015 model refresh

Jeep Wrangler diesel likely after 2015 model refresh originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 17:44:00 EST.
Following the forced-hand introduction of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, there has definitely been a mix of responses revolving around everything from its design to the return of the legendary nameplate. Following this not-too-warm reception, Ward's Auto had a chance to talk to Chrysler designer chief - and SRT president - Ralph Gilles, who shed a little more light on the styling direction of the new Cherokee.

Rather than looking to previous models for inspiration, Gilles says that the Cherokee has been designed to be more contemporary, with Mark Allen, head of Jeep design, adding that a main goal was to make sure the design still looks modern five years from now. Interestingly, Gilles does point out that one of the design elements incorporated on the new Cherokee that pays homage to past Jeeps is the sharply downward angle for the leading edge of the beltline, which he notes is meant to mimic the look of the old YJ and TJ Wrangler models fitted with half doors. Of course, the squared-off wheel openings - a signature Jeep cue - are still used.

This is probably a design that will need to be seen on the street in actual daylight to properly assess, but in the meantime, we'll bring you full images and impressions when the Cherokee debuts at next month's New York Auto Show.
Continue reading Ralph Gilles defends 2014 Jeep Cherokee design as "very contemporary"

Ralph Gilles defends 2014 Jeep Cherokee design as "very contemporary" originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 14:15:00 EST.

Coming off press previews of the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover and the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee that involved some heavy-duty off-road rock climbing, I'm simply amazed at the capabilities that these vehicles possess. But even more impressive (or troubling depending on your perspective) is the relative ease with which you can operate these vehicles in seemingly impossible terrain.

Not that I'm a hardcore off-roader, but I've been in my share of 4x4's over the years and remember having to get out and lock hubs, shift into neutral to engage low range and learning that the accelerator and brake pedals can be your best friends or worst enemies in either moving along or getting hopelessly stuck.

Thanks to the wonders of electronics, advanced transfer cases and electric limited slip differentials, instead of manipulating levers or locking hubs, one merely has to punch a button or turn a knob to engage the right strategy to deal with whatever conditions encountered on the trail.

Let's talk asses for a moment. What do they have to do with the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, you ask? Well, we're here to tell you that this SRT can haul some. Lots of them, as a matter of fact: Jeep has increased the towing capacity of its most powerful SUV to 3,266 kg (7,200 pounds).

Assuming the average donkey weighs about 180 kg (400 pounds), the Grand Cherokee SRT can haul ass to the tune of 18 burros, give or take a covered trailer or so, which is significantly more than it could in previous years. In 2013, the machine could manage 2,268 kg (5,000 pounds), while the first generation was rated at just 1,588 kg (3,500 pounds). The increase is mostly attributable to a new eight-speed automatic transmission and beefier rear axle, and it's a welcome update for those who'd like to use their SUV as, well, an SUV with an emphasis on utility.

You'll be pleased to know that this isn't the only kind of "ass hauling" the 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT is capable - it can also accelerate really, really quickly - 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.8 seconds to go along with quarter mile times in the low 13-second range (actually we've seen a 12.9 @ 105mph timeslip) and a top speed of 255 km/h (160 mph). That's extraordinary for a vehicle of this ilk - and the run to 60 matches that of the last-gen model despite an extra shift taking place due to the new gearbox. Passing performance is even more impressive, as evidenced by a 55-120 km/h (35-75 mph) sprint that's almost four seconds quicker than it was last year, again, thanks to the extra three gears in the transmission. It goes without saying that the 470 horses grazing on premium unleaded and spitting out 465 pound-feet of torque are also responsible for these accelerative antics, along with the full-time four-wheel-drive system called Selec-Track, which provides more traction than the most stubborn mule in the animal kingdom.

We've been rather fond of previous versions of this menacing machine, and with a slew of meaningful enhancements on the menu for the 2014 model year, we took to the track at the brand-new and most excellent Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas at the invitation of Jeep to find out just how Grand the iconic Cherokee nameplate has become.
Continue reading 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Mon, 25 Feb 2013 11:59:00 EST.

Automakers work very, very hard to keep their new vehicles under wraps until they can present them in exactly the way they want them - typically choreographed under the bright lights of an auto show, or perhaps with photos or video in an idyllic location. Spy shooters and leaks, in other words, keep executives and public-relations types up at night.

Take today, for instance, when the team over at Jalopnik got a big scoop - the first undisguised shots of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, a model whose name wasn't even officially confirmed yet. The clandestine images taken inside of a factory were blurry and didn't exactly show off the crossover's radical new contours in the same sort of flattering light that Jeep probably would've wished for its product reveal. So the Auburn Hills automaker has wisely reacted by spilling at least some of the beans on the new model, giving us these four photos and confirming the Liberty replacement's name, Cherokee.

This is likely to be one of the most polarizing designs to come out in 2014.

Jeep has only released a handful of shots of the trucklet's new nose, not showing off the profile or rear view (we note that today's spy shots didn't show the rear, either), but they do give the best look yet at what is likely to be one of the most polarizing designs to come out in 2014. The crimped-back seven-slot grille is a big enough design change that it will take some getting used to, but add in the Cherokee's aggressive split-lens headlamp treatment and you've got the makings of a design revolution.

No word yet on powertrain or pricing, but previous rumours have the Cherokee riding atop an Alfa Romeo-derived platform also shared with the Dodge Dart, which will likely mean that the mid-size utility carries front- and all-wheel drive variants and four-cylinder power. Jeep promises the Toledo-built model will hit showrooms in the third quarter of this year and be as much as 45 per cent more efficient than its predecessor.

What do you think? Have a look at the images in our gallery and take a gander at the brief press release below, then leave your thoughts in Comments. Is the 2014 Cherokee better or worse now that you have a clear look at it?
Continue reading 2014 Jeep Cherokee gets official in a hurry

2014 Jeep Cherokee gets official in a hurry originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Sat, 23 Feb 2013 16:00:00 EST.
We, at Autoblog Canada, are diesel afficianodos - we're suckers for copious amounts of torque, and we enjoy the relaxed highway cruising and superior fuel efficiency of diesel mills. Naturally, we're happy campers now that Jeep has announced they will be selling their Grand Cherokee with a new 3.0 litre diesel engine under-hood.

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has seen major updates inside and outside of the vehicle, and it's matured handsomely. For many Canadians, fuel efficiency is the last frontier of SUV ownership, and now that Jeep has launched their off-road capable city-slicker with an oil-burning V6, their last concern will be quelled.
