Alright, we have to admit we promised we'd resist posting any Harlem Shake videos during the brief time we're sure this fad will see popularity. If Harlem Shake videos are the new planking, then you can bet that 99 per cent of the attempts will be lame and soon forgotten. But of course, a recognized automotive name like Dupont Registry had to step in and we couldn't resist taking the bait of supercars surrounded by suits, er Dupont staff trying to be hip.

Poke fun all you want at the vanilla dance moves here (and well the clear folly of the helmet-wearing figure not starting the Harlem Shake) but this has to be the best collection of automotive hardware in one of these trendy vids. While, it looks like this may have been filmed with a toaster (come on Dupont, we know you have the bank) we can pick out all of the $1.5-million worth supercars here. We start off with a black Ferrari F430, which is joined after "the drop" by a Ford GT, Ferrari 599, McLaren MP4-12C, Audi R8 V10, Porsche GT3 RS, a Maybach 57S and a yellow Lambo Murcielago.

An exquisite collection of Harlem Shake props that we're hoping is never outdone, if only for the simple reason were hoping this fad fades fast. But if you really want our attention dance on some supercars next time.

Is this Putin or maybe elusive Russian billionaire and NBA team owner Mikhail Prokhorov? Perhaps it's NHL lock-out casualties Ovechkin and Kovalchuk with nothing to do in Russia but go for a Sunday drive on the crumbling roads of Moscow? Regardless we know this Russian Motorcade is dedicated to someone of stature complete with flagship Maybach 57 and trailing Cadillac Escalades.

But it seems these secret service goons driving this VIP around should spend less time training in Systema practicing their one-punch death blow and more time behind the wheel!

Before you ask, we don't know the name of the song and it's probably not available on iTunes. However we have watched this video a few times and determined how this crash caught on dash-cam unfolded. The Maybach was picking up speed and the Escalades were trying to stay together in a tight formation. As they accelerated a vehicle in front of the Maybach encountered a road hazard and started braking heavily. The first Escalade jams on the brakes hard and you can see at 0:21 you can see jerks as it taps the Maybach bumping it forward. The second Escalade plows into the first and well you can see the rest on the video after the jump.
Continue reading Russian motorcade crash takes out twin Escalades... and a Maybach!

Russian motorcade crash takes out twin Escalades... and a Maybach! originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 12:44:00 EST.

Daimler took hubris to a new level believing that
it could simply invent a new brand.

What was intended to make a big splash in the premium luxury car market has ended with a dull thud. Almost exactly a decade after it lifted the first of the big cars into New York by helicopter, Daimler AG has pulled the plug on its Maybach marque. And the odds are that few, if any, of the affluent motorists it was targeting will even notice the brand's departure.

Maybach was intended to go up against the most elite nameplates in the automotive market: Rolls-Royce and Bentley. But, in hindsight, it appears that Daimler took hubris to a new level believing that it could simply invent a new brand that would be taken seriously by the sort of buyers who want the Spirit of Ecstasy or Flying B hood ornaments on their cars.

The word "Maybach" has joined the long list of synonyms for the word "kaput." Mercedes-Benz released the price list for the 2013 models of its super-luxury sedans, with the price column simply stating "Discontinued" for each one of them.

The 2012 models, should there be any left for 11th-hour buyers, maintain the increased MSRPs that Daimler slapped on them late last year after it was known the brand would be terminated next year. But you might still be able to wrangle that $100,000 rebate if you ask nicely, or in Russian, or have Rick Ross ask for you.

It shouldn't be too long before we see the ultimate version of the next generation S-Class, the S600 Pullman, that will replace Maybach. Intriguingly, it's said the Pullman will be offered with every S-Class engine, even the four-cylinder diesel.

Sorry, Phillips de Pury & Company, but you guys evidently had no business auctioning this car at a sale of contemporary art. Because no matter what the dynamic rap duo of Kanye West and Jay-Z did to it, this 2004 Maybach 57 is, first and foremost, a used car. Clearly the art community has voted with its wallets - and decided that the vehicle's value is about what you could make if you parted it out. Frankly, that's sad.

For those that don't remember, the Maybach was heavily modified for use in the music video for the song "Otis," the Grammy Award-winning hit from Kanye's 2011 album Watch The Throne. Despite its overt ugliness, the car certainly has provenance. (Did we mention that the song won a Grammy?) We only hope that whomever ponied up the paltry sum of $60-grand for the "Otis" Maybach is either a real music fan or someone who goes on to resell it at Barrett-Jackson or another car auction where they know how to move the celebrity metal.

The memory of Jay Z and Kanye West laying waste to a $350,000 Maybach for the duo's "Otis" music video continues to bring a smile to our face. We're always fans of the Mad Max treatment on any vehicle, and taking a Sawzall and a cutting torch to a ludicrously expensive luxury barge remains the stuff of our twisted fantasies. If you've been wondering what ever happened to the zombie Maybach, wonder no more. What's left of the 'Bach is officially headed to auction, with the proceeds going to Save The Children, a non-profit charity dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world. In this case, the auction will benefit families in East Africa.

How much will the cannibalized Maybach fetch once the gavel falls? Early estimates say bids could reach as high as $100,000, or less than a third of the vehicle's total value pre-Otisification. Worth it? Well, we certainly won't tell you how to spend your cash, but if you're a fan of hip hop royalty and/or Save The Children, we're inclined to think so. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Continue reading Jay Z and Kanye West's gutted Maybach expected to fetch $100,000 [w/video]

Jay Z and Kanye West's gutted Maybach expected to fetch $100,000 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 18:01:00 EST.
As far as two-seaters go, they don't get much farther apart than the Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 and the Mazda MX-5 Miata. The Mazda is as cheap as the Bugatti is expensive, and the Veyron has as many turbochargers - and digits in its output figures - as the Miata has cylinders. But this homegrown example aims to bridge the gap.

Someone, it seems, has stretched out their Miata's wheelbase and fitted a pair of eight-cylinder engines (which is essentially what powers the Bugatti) under the extended hood - or where the hood used to be, anyway. The result, as you can see from the brief clip after the jump, is rather rumblesome. Here's hoping the next vid has a bit more action...
Continue reading Twin-engined, sixteen-cylinder Mazda MX-5 Miata, anyone?

Twin-engined, sixteen-cylinder Mazda MX-5 Miata, anyone? originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Mon, 13 Feb 2012 14:59:00 EST.
Daimler is shuttering Maybach in 2013 after seven years of production. In that time, the company's ultra-ultra-luxury arm managed to sell just 3,000 units, and CAR reports Daimler lost somewhere around US$500,000 on each and every one of them.

Even with a ludicrous price tag of over US$370,000 for an "entry" Maybach 57, the brand couldn't quite recoup the dizzying US$1.33 billion Daimler poured into it since its (re)inception. Rumours ignited over a possible tie up with Aston Martin that would have resulted in a range of new and attractive models, but Daimler has instead decided to snuff out Maybach altogether.

We can hardly blame them.

Mercedes-Benz will pick up the ultra-luxury slack with a new range of sedans based on the S-Class. Those bruisers will likely bow in 2013 just as Maybach turns out the lights for good.

When Daimler let slip that Maybach was on the chopping block, the German automaker reportedly insisted that ultra-luxury editions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class would replace the doomed marque. We're all for a smattering of low volume, seriously pricey S-Class variants, but will the richest and most influential Maybach buyers feel the same way?

Automotive News reports that Bentley is betting that stars like Jay-Z and Samuel L. Jackson will want more than a gussied-up Benz, and the luxury car make is sending out olive branches in the form of a letter campaign. The premium Volkswagen brand is asking the high-rollers to step into a Bentley Mulsanne or perhaps a top-shelf Continental GT. To help persuade VIPs to switch to Bentley, the automaker is inviting select Maybach owners to tour its Crewe, England home.

Given the fact that many typical soccer moms and dads can afford an ML-Class, we can see why some movie stars and sultans would want to steer clear of the Three-Pointed Star. But is Bentley really going to gain much by wooing the 200 annual Maybach buyers? If a few more rap stars roll in a Bentley in their next music video, then the answer would appear to be yes.

That Daimler can't sell enough Maybach superluxury sedans to justify the brand's existence is the worst-kept secret in the entire automotive industry. The numbers don't really make a dent in what its competitors sell, and they are but a drop in the bucket of what the company moves as a whole. That's what's prompted Daimler to seek out more cost-effective alternatives to the current Maybach line, and what's reportedly forced them to move to shutter the brand in the near future.

So you'd think that the prices on buying a new Maybach would be dropping considerably as a result. And you may very well get your local dealer to cut one heck of a deal to get one of their limousines out of the showroom. But you wouldn't know it from the latest pricing updates released by Mercedes-Benz USA.

Instead of slashing their prices in an effort to turn a profit before shutting down the brand, Daimler has actually increased the MSRPs on 2012 models. Not by much, mind you - about US$4,000 across the board (save the US$1.38M Landaulet, which stays the same). Of course, that probably isn't enough to deter someone willing to shell out this kind of money from buying a Maybach. But the sheer audacity of raising the sails on a sinking vessel is certainly an interesting tactic to save the ship.
Continue reading Daimler increases prices on 2012 Maybach models

Daimler increases prices on 2012 Maybach models originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 18:30:00 EST.
According to an unnamed Mercedes-Benz source speaking with Autoweek, the German automaker is killing off its Maybach line in 2013.

The unsurprising news comes after the brand was resurrected in 2002, but failed to meet sales expectations with its two core models, the Maybach 57 and 62. Further solidifying its fate, a deal for Aston Martin to aid in the development of future Maybachs fell through earlier this year.

According to the Autoweek's insider, the plan is to continue to sell both Maybach models through the end of 2013, after which the fifth-generation S-Class will go on sale. When that happens, three new variants of the S-Class will be available, including an all-new, range-topping S600 that brings back the Pullman moniker and may be better suited to competing with the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

You just can't catch a break in this world if your name is Maybach. The superlux Daimler division has had trouble selling enough vehicles to seriously challenge the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce - divisions of arch-rivals Volkswagen and BMW, respectively. It can't seem to broker a viable deal with Aston Martin to produce a new range. Even that one-off Exelero wasn't paid for in full after being purchased by a certain hip-hop artist. Now the last ambitious project by the double-M marque appears to have floundered, too.

As you may recall, a German coachbuilder called Xenatec recently launched an initiative, with Maybach's blessing, to produce a series of hyper-exclusive million-dollar Maybach coupes. The idea stemmed from Xenatec's existing business producing armored luxury cars for those with the means. Unfortunately, the program doesn't seem to have attracted enough buyers to make it viable, and the associated costs have reportedly now bankrupted the company.

All-in-all, eight or so Maybach Cruiserio Coupes are reported to have been sold, with another three in various states of build seeking buyers. We're not sure who would complete them even if they were sold, however, as the bulk of Xenatec's workforce has apparently either quit or been laid off.

If you have, like us, been salivating at the notion of a new generation of Maybach and Lagonda ultra-luxury crafts built by Aston Martin, we've got some bad news: According to reports emanating from Germany, talks between AML and Daimler have broken down.

The proposal under negotiation would have seen Daimler outsourcing production of the next family of Maybach models to Aston Martin, which in return would benefit from Mercedes-Benz platforms and engines - not only for its svelte GTs, but also for its own future Lagonda line of limousines and luxury SUVs. That, and a boatload of money - or at least that's what AML was reportedly seeking, an issue that served as the stumbling block over which the deal reportedly collapsed.

That's not to say the two parties couldn't still reach some sort of a compromise, but short of that, Daimler may opt to either shut down Maybach altogether, find another partner, or take another stab at building new models internally.

Daimler may not be able to sell very many Maybachs, but there's a flip-side to that equation: Rarity. Exclusivity. Qualities which a Maybach has in spades. But if every tycoon and magnate in your elite neighbourhood already has one, and you want to stand out a bit (but not too much) from the crowd, you're going to want something even more exclusive. Like the Edition 125!

That exclamation mark - like the concept currently on display in Frankfurt - is part of the name, not added emphasis on our part, and helps underscore the claim which Daimler lays on the origins of the automobile which it now celebrates a century and a quarter later.

The party starts off with the 57 S model, that being the (relatively) shorter-wheelbase sedan with the twin-turbo V12 that's just had its output increased to 630 horsepower. That's power that'd make many a supercar blush, but Maybach didn't stop there: for the special edition, the automaker gave the 57 a new front grille, a set of high-contrast 20-inch alloys and the signature of Wilheml Maybach (he who helped Gottlieb Daimler invent the automobile) embroidered into the glovebox lid.

The Edition 125! also gets special Tahiti Black and Patagonia Silver colour options, part of an expanded catalog of colour swatches available for the exterior and interior of the elite Mercs which you can read more about in the press release after the jump.

What kind of person would order an $8 million Maybach? The same sort who'd take another Maybach and hack it up with a saw and blowtorch. That's right, a hip-hop mega star.

Long before Jay-Z and Kanye West shot the music video for "Otis", Bryan "Birdman" Williams had placed his order for his very own Maybach Exelero. The price tag: a whopping $8 million. Pocket change for a guy worth over $100 million with a Veyron and a Landaulet in the garage. But now he seems to be running into some trouble.

Apparently, Birdman still owes money on his other seven-figure rides, and has yet to fork over the eight mil to the Exelero's current owner Arnaud Massartic. Until he does, it remains the European entrepreneur's property, though Birdman very well might find a way to work it into his next video just the same.

If you've got money and taste, you might choose a new Bentley or Rolls-Royce. But if you've only got the former, you might be more inclined to go with a Maybach. In fact, as often as Phantoms show up in hip-hop videos, we're pretty sure the only people buying Maybachs are Daimler executives and rap stars.

Case in point, the latest music video from Jay-Z and Kanye West. With plenty of Benjamins between them to burn, the hip-hop mega stars take a new Maybach limousine and shred it up all Mad Max style in the video for "Otis," the single off their latest collaboration Watch the Throne. Follow the jump to see them make their own Landaulet on a budget with a blowtorch while they wax lyrical about their Benz, their other Benz and their other other Benz.

Filed under: Aston Martin, Maybach, Mercedes-Benz

When you're arriving in a twin-turbocharged, twelve-cylinder Maybach limo, there's no reason you should ever have to be late. Except, maybe, to make a fashionable entrance. But up at the corporate level, the entire Maybach brand is being slowed down as critical decisions about its future are being undertaken.

Last week, we reported that a decision on what path Maybach would take going forward would be due at the start of next month, but the latest reports indicate that the timeframe has been extended as further options are being considered.

The previous options under consideration were twofold: either relaunch the brand with production outsourced to Aston Martin - which suddenly finds itself with excess production capacity - or shut it down completely. And those are still two very real options. Word has it that Aston has put together four concept cars for the Daimler brass to consider, all based on the next-generation S-Class platform (and thankfully not the old one).

Should Zetsche and company reject those proposals, they could very well close the Maybach chapter and chalk it up to another failed experiment like the Chrysler takeover. But another option has reportedly been laid on the table: namely, to turn Maybach into a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz.

What would be the difference, you ask, between having Maybach as a sister-brand versus a sub-brand of Mercedes? Well, it would mean that Maybach would cease producing its own cars, and instead come in as a new top-of-the-line trim level on the likes of the expanding S-Class range and GL-Class SUV. In that way, it would parallel AMG (although that sub-brand sorta has its own product in the SLS) under the Mercedes umbrella, or perhaps more aptly, ape the application of the Rolls-Royce Goodwood badge by BMW to its most exclusive Mini models. Only much higher up in the market.

What will become of Maybach? That question has been rattling around the halls of Daimler headquarters in Stuttgart for some time now. But all questions will be answered, and answered soon: according to reports, the German automaker is currently evaluating prototypes and propositions for its top-end marque, and will make its decision next month.

So, what are the options? On the one hand, Daimler could kill the Maybach brand altogether. It was a notion ill-conceived and even more poorly executed, taking an old platform and building a new flagship atop it. In that way, it was sort of like the Chrysler Crossfire, only far more costly to both the buyer and manufacturer. On the other hand, Daimler could opt for the long-time-coming proposition of contracting the production (and possibly much of the development) of a new generation of Maybachs to Aston Martin.

The British automaker has been linked with a future Maybach tie-in for some time now. The idea would be to have Aston produce the hyper-luxury range for Daimler at its own facility in Gaydon, Warwickshire, England - the same location that was recently expanded to accommodate bringing the Rapide home from its current assembly line at the Magna Steyr complex in Austria. In return, Aston could get the platforms and engines to underpin its next generation of vehicles, including the rebirth of the Lagonda badge.

One way or another, reports indicate the decision will be made on July 1st. As to when said decision might be announced, well... we'll just have to sit tight and find out.

Last week we brought you reports of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class expanding into numerous body-styles, but the coupe, convertible and pair of sedans in two different wheelbase lengths may not be the extent of it. Reports indicate that Daimler is considering a new four-door coupe to slot in above the CLS.

The model would target the Bentley Continental in a high-end model with even more dramatic styling (for those who feel the second-generation CLS is too conservative) and a range of AMG engines to help justify the engrossed pricetag.

While the new model is being touted as a Mercedes, a potential Maybach version could also be in the cards, like the Xenatec Cruiserio coupe pictured above.

Schmuck. It's the German word for jewelry. It's also the kind of customer who would be interested in buying a Maybach paved in diamonds. But that doesn't appear to be deterring the top-of-the-line Daimler brand from icing out its limousines like a rapper with a new record contract.

Back in 2006, Maybach teamed up with Wellendorf jewellers to offer precious stones to deck out its interiors. Now the German auto marque is passing the torch on to Swiss jeweler de Grosogono. In a star-studded party at the Cannes Film Festival, the two companies announced a new partnership that will allow customers with more cash than taste to have their Maybach iced out.

The first example of a Maybach 62S will be unveiled to the gathered guests with a diamond-emblazoned rear armrest (sounds comfortable), but a more thoroughly bedazzled limo is set to be unveiled in November at no less suitable a venue than the Dubai Motor Show. We can hardly wait.

Fortunately enough, no official photos have yet been made available, but you can read the official announcement after the jump if you're so inclined.
