It's a busy day over at Mercedes-Benz. In addition to taking the wraps off of the all-new 2014 S-Class sedan, the company's engineers have been spotted testing the rakish, two-door variant of the Mercedes flagship, which will ditch its CL-Class nomenclature in favour of a more precise S-Class Coupe moniker. (Remember, the coupe and convertible versions of the E-Class used to go by the name CLK.)

Now that we have all the details on the big S-Class sedan, we have a pretty good guess as to how all of that will work its way over to the two-door model. What we're most curious about, however, is how the new car will look when its swirly paper is removed. Up front, the fascia looks like a slightly redesigned version of what's found on the sedan, but it's around back where things get really interesting. Rather than using the vertical rear lighting elements of the four-door, the S-Class Coupe seems to be fitted with some slim, horizontal units. Colour us intrigued.

Mercedes-Benz will initially launch the S-Class sedan with twin-turbo V8 power in both the S550 and S63 AMG, so we expect those same powerplants to make their way over to the coupe, as well. We'll know more when the two-door gets its official reveal in the not-too-distant future (Frankfurt Motor Show, perhaps?).

The Mercedes-Benz Unimog, the superhero villain of the off-road world that's just waiting to make the jump to Transformer, has been completely upgraded for its new generation. There are ten models, expanding the range and getting new designations across the traditional all-terrain series and the implement-carrier series. Panoramic cabins get more visibility, multifunction steering wheels and better dash clusters, improved HVAC and a three-mode central tire inflation system. Outside, there are new items like LED headlights and daytime running lamps in the bumper, roof-mounted windshield wipers and a front-camera monitor for the implement carrier.

The new engine lineup is compliant with Euro VI, featuring four- and six-cylinder BlueEfficiency diesel engines putting out anywhere from 156 horsepower to 354 hp. Powerplant placement has also been tweaked, the chassis members getting a revised curve to place the engine a bit further back and lower, maintaining off-road clearance and lowering the Unimog's centre of gravity. The new location of the engine means the cabin has more room, and the wheelbase is shorter. Combined with a higher turning angle, the Unimog has a smaller turning radius than before.

The implement carrier gets what's called a "synergistic traveling drive," the bonus being that drivers don't need to stop in order to use an attachment - a hydrostatic transmission works with the regular manual transmission at up to 31 kilometers per hour for seamless switching.

Those are just a tiny number of the changes in the new monsters from Mercedes-Benz. You can find out enough about them in the videos and three press releases below to become a certified dealer.

Road rage violence is a serious matter, especially if you're an angry Marine Sergeant and your foolish flip out goes viral after being caught on camera. The US Marine Corps' advertising slogan may indeed be "The Few. The Proud." but there's certainly nothing to be proud of when it comes to the erratic "Come at me bro!" behaviour displayed by a Camp Pendleton Marine after a car crash.

According to the road rage victim, the Marine cut them off and then repeatedly slammed on his brakes, which may have caused the crash. After coming to a stop, the suspect allegedly jumped out of his vehicle and started kicking the victim's car, smashing his fists against the window's and screaming obscene threats at them.

Amazingly enough, the victim and his reportedly traumatized passenger seem to keep their cool as the violent attack ensues. The out of breath Marine and his hilariously high-pitched demands for a fight continue to go unanswered until a few good samaritan's finally step in, holding him (and his chest-beating ego) back as he goes berserk upon being restrained.

Based on reports, a Camp Pendleton spokesperson stated the Marine was in fact detained and cited for communicating threats. Making matters worse, the subject is also apparently a Purple Heart recipient, whose name is being withheld until formal charges are announced.

Filed under: BMW, Military, Spy Photos, Sedan

It's been a while since we've seen the upcoming BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe out testing, but we're sort of inclined to ask "Why?" yet again. After all, the 4 Series is what the new 3 Series-based coupes and convertibles will be called, so the idea of another four-door version just sort of seems redundant. In other words, just how different will a 4 Series Gran Coupe be from a 3 Series sedan, aside from perhaps a more rakish roofline or a four-passenger seating configuration? Probably not much, but BMW clearly thinks it can use the additional bodystyle to rake in some extra profits.

Anyway, back to these spy shots. No more of the 4GC's skin has been revealed since the last time we saw it, but we fully expect it to share a lot of its design DNA with the 3 Series sedan, not to mention the attractive 4 Series coupe concept that bowed at this year's Detroit Auto Show.

Powertrain options should carry over direct from the 3 Series line, so we expect to see 428i and 435i models on hand, packing turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines, respectively. We're sure that BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive will be available, and who knows, we could even get a 428d version with the new 2.0-litre turbodiesel four that debuted in the 328d at the New York Auto Show last week, or even an M4 variant.

The 4 Series coupe is expected to launch later this year, so expect to see the 4CG shortly thereafter. Click here for more spy shot photos and take a closer look at the BMW 4 Series teaser video.

It looks like Russian and US diplomats are in for a round of "My limo's bigger than your limo." Russian automaker ZiL has been working on the car pictured above for the last six years and they believe they've perfected the Presidential limo. The car was commissioned after Vladimir Putin proclaimed that he wanted to ride in something Russian, not another run-of-the-mill Mercedes or Cadillac (take that, Obama).

How did ZiL end up with the above shape? "We tried to preserve the generic feature[s] of the ZiL: the recognizable style, the lighting, the mirrors," said ZiL's Mikhail Sattarov. "We wanted it to be clear that this is a ZiL, not a soapbox, not a Mercedes. If you look, it's dark blue. If you look at what Obama drives around in, it's a scary submarine, no kind of aesthetic; it's awful to look at." If the rhetoric continues down this path we could be in for a political spat fit for UN intervention!

Of course, while the Russian automaker snubbed American exterior design they seem to appreciate American engineering - the ZiL will use an engine and transmission built in America.

Speaking of the engine, you're probably wondering about the technical bits under-hood. It's reported that the Russian ZiL limo is powered by a 7.7 litre engine that achieves a rather jet-plane-like 27.5 L/100km (8.57 mpg). This mill is capable of hurling the 3,175 kg (7,000 lb) limo-tank to a terminal velocity of 200 km/h (125 mph). As far as fuel efficiency goes, this actually represents a significant improvement, more than doubling mileage; this ZiL's predecessor was said to suck back fuel to the tune of 72.4 L/100km (3.5 mpg).

Since we're already on the topic of fuel, we should point out that like the US presidential limo, the Russian ZiL limo burns gasoline as its fuel of choice - not diesel. American Secret Service personal recently caused a major security breach when they accidentally poured diesel fuel where only gasoline is welcome.

Of course, no one around this machine is concerned about fuel economy, safety is what matters most. The ZiL limo is armoured such that it can take high calibre bullets and even survive land mine and RPG explosions. When it comes to interior appointments the ZiL is said to carry the Russian president in the lap of luxury, with a fully stocked workstation within.

So, who's mega-armoured ride is best? There's clearly only one way to solve this: a presidential limo drag-race.

Reports are coming in from Israel that US President Obama's limousine, often called "The Beast," has broken down. You might be wondering how the most protected vehicle in the world could break down on an overseas visit, and the answer will surprise you. Apparently, somebody filled The Beast with diesel fuel instead of gasoline, according The Times of Israel. As the report goes...

"The Americans filled it up with diesel, rather than petrol," reports Channel 2 - stressing that it was the Americans, not the Israelis.

What does the Secret Service do when the President's ride has been compromised this way? Since calling a cab is out of the question, they reportedly have a replacement limousine being flown in from Jordan. "Son of Beast," we'll call it.

Perhaps if Cadillac developed a "Beast" based upon the new ELR, the Secret Service wouldn't have had to add fuel in the first place? Click through to watch the ELR in winter testing.

UPDATE: According to the Times of Israel, this was actually the backup limo as the original one shipped wouldn't start at the airport.

Some of the fastest and most expensive cars in the world roll through Jay Leno's Garage - we're pretty sure this fits mostly in the latter category. American Army General Dennis Via brought the US government's new Fuel Efficient Ground Vehicle Demonstrator prototype troop transporter for Leno to check out and take for a spin. We're sure there were more than a few surprised residents and motorists in the LA area when Leno took the massive FED out for a late-night test drive.

The FED employs plenty of carbon fibre and aluminum as a weight-reducing measure, which helps give this four-seater a 30 per cent improvement in fuel economy over current military vehicles. Yet even after such a significant increase in efficiency, the FED's fuel economy numbers hit around 33L/100km (7 mpg). Under the carbon fibre hood, the FED is powered by a turbocharged and supercharged Cummins four-cylinder engine putting out 200 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. That helps produce enough power to get the 6,800 kg (15,000-pound) FED to have a top speed of almost 120 km/h (75 mph).

In the near term, lessons learned on the FED will be applied to current military vehicles most likely including the seat design and seatbelt harnesses aimed at reducing injuries in the case that the vehicle runs over an explosive device.

The use of military motorcycles is nothing new, but the latest Chistini AWD Military Edition (pictured above) is no ordinary bike. Yes, you read correctly... this is an all-wheel-drive motorcycle developed to deliver hardcore off road performance in any conditions.

Although it should come as no surprise that the U.S. Army has been evaluating the use of these combat ready motorcycles in reconnaissance missions, the best part is you can actually order one of these Military Edition bad boys for yourself!

The Christini AWD Military Edition is based on the "civilian" Christini AWD 450, but features a multitude of add on high performance parts for added protection and longevity. According to Christini, the Military Edition is currently used by Navy Seals and Special Forces, meaning this is one serious machine most gearheads would love to get their hands on (and now you can).

Best of all, the GI-Joe looking Christini AWD Military Edition can be built to order based on your specific needs.

Going up against an organized military must be quite a challenge, but Syrian rebels have used a little ingenuity to give themselves a fighting chance in the country's civil war. Judging by the fact that the uprising has lasted for more than a year now, the fighters definitely have skills in weapons and military tactics, but some of the rebels have displayed a different sort of skill by busting out their torches and welders to create this homemade tank.

Looking like something you'd see on an old episode of The A-Team, this armoured assault vehicle started life as some sort of diesel truck and was converted to its current state using a lot of steel and a big gun. The occupants, engine and tires are all protected by thick metal, and the vehicle uses four cameras (including a gunner camera that can be zoomed in by what appears to be a Playstation controller) and a rear-facing camera to help the driver pilot the massive vehicle.

We don't know how well this vehicle performs when in action, but we're sure Hannibal, Face, Murdock and B.A. Baracus would all be proud of the effort. Scroll down to see the tank in action, courtesy of a video posted by Russia Today on YouTube, including running over a helpless pile of branches.
Continue reading Syrian rebels show off their inner A-Team with homemade tank

Syrian rebels show off their inner A-Team with homemade tank originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 11 Dec 2012 19:58:00 EST.
If you were looking forward to the day you could order one of AM General's HUMVEE C-Series kits, it's almost time to get out the wrenches. Details, photos and a pre-order form are live on the AM General website.

Most of the details are as we reported in August, with a couple of surprises. The C-Series will still be a kit requiring an engine but now starts at US$59,995, US$995 more than previously reported. The doors and top remain covered in rugged, minimalist, "canvas-style" vinyl, and the aluminum body will be assembled with heat-set adhesive, which will then be put together airplane-style with 2,800 rivets.

The bodies will be available with khaki, green or sand-colored paint over the "corrosion-thwarting alodine" treated aluminum panels. The composite hood comes with lights, latches and wiring pre-installed.

Inside, four passengers will have high-back cloth seats and air conditioning. Though we previously reported that the interiors won't be trimmed out, C-Series kits will come with a camo-print dashboard to hold the basic gauge package.

Options include a Central Tire Inflation System for US$1,611 or CTIS with wheels, tires and beadlocks for US$6,964, a 12,000-pound (5,443 kg) winch at US$2,249, driveline protection for US$985, heated windshields for US$946, a geared fan drive (required for engines over 220 horsepower) for US$3,588 and front and rear diffs upgraded to Eaton ELocker units for US$2,452.

The first 50 customers can lock in the US$60k price with a 10 per cent deposit and can expect to receive their projects as early as next spring. AM's website points out that while all the parts they ship are guaranteed free of defect, once you put them together, the completed vehicle is not warranted by the company. And since General Motors owns the now-defunct Hummer brand, the finished product must be called a Humvee.

At first glance it may look like some crazy custom Hummer or life size G.I. Joe toy, but this extreme machine is actually built by the off-road vehicle specialists at Zibar in Israel. Never heard of them? Well you're not alone, as we hadn't either... that is until we noticed this bad ass Hummer-fighter staring us down on the SEMA show floor last week.

Naturally, we had to learn more and share our tour of this military-spec 4x4 in photo gallery form. Based on our civilian intel, the Zibar MK2 desert patrol vehicles is powered by a GM LSX 454ci, which delivers a whopping 620 horsepower from its 7.4 litres along with a staggering 590 lb-ft of torque. With a curbweight of 2,700 kg (5,950 lbs) and a 0-100 km/h time of just 5 seconds, this monster shouldn't be taken lightly.

According to its creators, the Zibar MK2 has been designed and built with a single purpose in mind: high mobility over any terrain. It's built on what Zibar calls a "flexible platform" which allows any MK2 to be easily tailored to meet a customer's needs, while maintaining full flexibility for any future modifications.

Current Zibar models are easily configured for security, VIP and military use world wide. Armed with over 20-inches (530mm) of under body ground clearance a top speed of 180 km/h and an approach angle of 90 degrees, yes 90, so the Zibar MK2 is ideally suited for any mission at hand.

There's a soft spot in our hearts for well-done resuscitation of vintage off-road iron. Perhaps the most notable company performing such restomod work is Icon 4x4, but the Californian outfit isn't the only company turning its attention to the down-and-dirty side of the vintage scene.

Legacy Classic Trucks in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is using the 2012 SEMA Show to display the Legacy Power Wagon. As its name implies, the truck started life many, many years ago as a Dodge Power Wagon (built between 1945 and 1980 - not to be confused with the current version), itself based on an older military design. In stock form, the Power Wagon was much loved for its stalwart ability to carry people and products over just about any terrain.

In the form you see above, the massively capable Power Wagon looks beefy enough to pull a freight train uphill through a snow storm... or something like that. As seen above, the Legacy Power Wagon would set back its buyer some US$180,000. In base configuration, the truck runs US$114,950. That's a huge sum, no doubt, but we're sure a few well-heeled buyers won't mind.

If nothing else, the Legacy Power Wagon Conversion is equipped with top-shelf componentry. The buyer can choose from either a 426-cubic-inch V8 with 425 horsepower from the Mopar parts book or a 3.9-litre Cummins turbo diesel four cylinder mill pounding out 480 pound-feet of torque. A range of transmission options are available, up to the stout Allison unit of the show truck.

All the specifications and options can be seen here, and we invite you to gaze at our high-res image gallery above.

The Dean V. Kruse Foundation is hard at work scrounging up cash to pay off some serious debt, and that work has led the organization to auction off more than half of the vehicles contained in the National Military History Center collection. If you're looking for World War II-era armor, consider this your one-stop shop. Want a 1941 Krupp Flak gun? No problem. How about a 1944 Steyr full-track? This Auctions America sale has you covered. The listing even includes rarities like a 1943-44 Dragon Wagon Tank recovery vehicle.

That particular machine was built to pull heavy hardware out of sticky situations. A pair of 60,000-pound winches were made to yank stricken armor onto the trailer, allowing the 48,890-pound crawler to trundle to safety at a top speed of 28 mph. Later, this same design was used to pull Saturn V rockets around for NASA.

All told, the auction will offer the largest selection of full and half-track military vehicles for sale at the same time. Head over to the Auctions America site for a closer look.

In the battle for luxury car dominance, BMW has managed to hold on to its place at the top of the pile, for now. Global sales rose 14.3 per cent last month, to 146,843 units, on strong sales in China and global sales of the 1 Series small car (pictured). That brings BMW's sales through nine months up 8.6 per cent, to 1.11 million vehicles.

Meanwhile Audi global sales increased by 12.8 per cent, continuing to close in on BMW with 1.10 million vehicles sold through three quarters. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz sales rose two per cent to 964,926.

Audi's impressive sales rally was not enough to overcome BMW's Chinese sales, which jumped 59.4 percent to 29,631 vehicles. BMW also benefited from strong sales of the 1 Series, which increased 51.1 per cent to 25,583 units worldwide.

China has become the German automaker's largest singular market, with the United States in second. US sales of BMW's rose 3.5 per cent to 26,660. Also, despite the German automobile market contracting 11 percent, BMW sales rose 9.3 percent on its home turf, to 26,021.

According to BMW brand sales chief Ian Robertson, "We expect to see further growth in worldwide sales in the fourth quarter." BMW Group sales, including Mini and Rolls-Royce, grew 11.6 per cent last month to 177,716. Through nine months, global sales increased 8.3 percent to 1.33 million vehicles sold. As Audi continues to remain in BMW's rear view mirror, these final months of the year will be crucial for both automakers in the battle for the top premium brand.

SEMA is right around the corner, folks, and that means a whole slew of custom auto builders are working furiously to finish project cars in time for their Vegas introductions. One of the coolest is bound to come from ICON. Based on a 1965 Dodge D200 crew cab that previously saw use by the American military, we fully expect ICON's latest to be in the running for best-of-show.

Underneath the customized vintage bodywork will sit a chassis borrowed from a much more recent Ram 3500 fitted with a 4.5-inch suspension lift kit. A Banks-modified Cummins turbodiesel with six inline cylinders displacing 5.9 litres will reportedly pump out 975 pound-feet of torque. That's the kind of get-up-and-go we can get behind.

Only one of these machines is currently being built, painted in white with black accents and wheels. The interior is sewn up from free-range bison leather and is outfitted with a high-end stereo system, according to Fox News. This one is headed to an anonymous client, and we're jealous. Very jealous!

Something special is bound to happen anytime a group of high-horsepower exotic cars get together, especially if they meet face-to-face and prepare to battle on an open stretch of runway! That's exactly what happens at the annual Race the Base Challenge, as this charity fundraising event continues to grow and raise awareness for the Canadian Forces and funds for a few good causes.

Race the Base offers car enthusiasts and spectators a rare chance to witness some of the world's fastest supercars in head-to-head action. Lucky attendees are able to get up close and personal with a number of their favourite exotics, while drivers get to duel it out in a number individual events to earn points in their respective classes.

This year's event featured a dream car roster including a Ferrari 458 Italia, Saleen S7, McLaren MP4-12C, Corvette ZR1, Ferrari F40, Hennessey Viper Venom, Ford GT, plus every Lamborghini you could think of!

The simple formula is exciting to watch and a hit among fans. Each car gets to strut their stuff by competing in a side-by-side standing mile, wet drift competition, time attack road course and an ultimate top speed event (followed by an optional yet obligatory tire smokin' donut contest!)

During next month's General Police Equipment Exhibition & Conference (GPEC) in Leipzig, Germany, BMW will present its next round of vehicles developed for police and VIPs. Five 2013 cars and four motorcycles - the 3 Series Touring, X3, 7 Series High Security and X5 Security, i3 Concept, R1200RT, G650GS, F800ST and K1600GT - will be displayed at the BMW stand.

Potential German federal and state police use of the 3 Series Touring and X3 were considerations during development, with features such as iDrive-controlled sirens and LED beacons integrated to BMW factory standards. At the opposite end, the electric i3 Concept is for police in urban areas where emissions reduction is a key consideration.

The BMW 7 Series High Security and X5 Security meet the elevated standards of amoured vehicles classified by the VR scale. The BR1 to BR7 measurements assess the resistance of the armour itself, but not how well the entire vehicular package withstands attack. The VR tests address that; the scale goes from VR1 to VR9, the 7 Series H.S. is rated at VR7 overall and VR9 in some specific cases. the X5 Security is rated VR4, which is tough enough to stop rounds from a .44 Magnum.

Motorcycle officers get the latest version of the much-used R1200RT, a brand new bronze-green military version of the G650GS, a prototype of the F800ST and a police-issue, six-cylinder K1600GT.

For anyone feeling nostalgic about the passing of the Hummer brand, or the actual wartime vehicle that inspired it, now is your chance to own a version of the original HMMWV, albeit without an engine.

After a 12-year hiatus from the civilian vehicle market, AM General is reportedly set to offer a kit-car of the C-Series Humvee. The kit will conform to U.S. government regulations and has been made possible by a deal with General Motors.

The kit costs US$59,000 - and you still need an engine. A likely favorite would be a Duramax Diesel V8 and Allison transmission combination, as was found on the H1 Alpha. AM General estimates that an owner could buy the kit Humvee and outfit a powerplant and transmission for US$75,000. Not bad, considering that H1 Alpha had an MSRP of US$140,000 in 2005.

How is this possible? If you recall, GM was trying to unload the Hummer brand to Chinese-based Sichuan-Tengzhong, among other suitors. As we all know, a deal never happened and the brand rumbled off into the sunset. The deal with AM General worked so that the military Humvee producer could offer a vehicle to the public as long as it was fundamentally different from the H1. By offering a kit car, they apparently end-around much of the legal confines.

But that also means are other setbacks. The final product will not look like the civilian Hummer H1, and it will not have niceties like interior trim, power locks, door mounted mirrors, or even hard doors. It will simply be a four-seat, soft-top, soft door vehicle. AM General will offer 'add-on' factory options such as the Central Tire Inflation System, rocker protection, and potentially two-piece beadlock wheels.

As the story over at Hummer Guy puts it, "just remember - its a Humvee, not a Hummer."

The Lamborghini Aventador is one of the quickest and fastest supercars on the market today, but does it have what it takes to beat a fighter jet? And not just any jet, but an F-16 Fighting Falcon, perhaps the most iconic plane flown by the U.S. Air Force? Norwegian auto rag Bilmagasinet (literally translated as "car magazine") aimed to answer this question, and brought both vehicles to an active air field to find out whether or not this bull could beat a little old bird.

All we have to go on is their well-produced YouTube video, but from the footage we can see the Aventador more than holds its own in a straight drag race with the fighter plane. Once the Falcon takes flight, however, the Lamborghini gets left behind.

This stunt was of course performed by Richard Hammond back in 2007 with a Bugatti Veyron and Eurofighter Typhoon jet on Top Gear. We're no experts on military jets, but the Eurofighter is a much newer design than the F-16 Fighting Falcon and we suspect a much tougher opponent to face across the Christmas Tree of a makeshift drag strip. As such, the Veyron, today's current king of super cars, was no match for the Typhoon.

Known for unmitigated excess to some, the Cadillac Escalade embodies over-the-top transportation for oil barons and high-rolling hip-hop stars. The Detroit Bureau quotes an unknown senior Cadillac official saying, "We were finding that for everyone turned on by that image there were four (potential luxury buyers) who were [turned off]." Add in national gas prices flirting up towards $1.40-$1.50 a litre this summer, and the Escalade seemed destined to join the flamboyant fins of the 1959 Eldorado.

But The Detroit Bureau says GM saw too much profit in the tanker-sized truck and plans to refresh it in early 2014 as a 2015 model. The Bureau predicts the SUV will continue to be body-on-frame with the new 2013 Chevrolet pickup underpinnings holding it all together. It's probably safe to assume the luxury will be upsized, the engine uptuned and the price upjacked.
