While more and more buyers seem to be opting for the functionality of car-based crossover vehicles every day, it's rare that your read much in the way of passionate praise for one. And, while Consumer Reports doesn't exactly lavish written paeans on the Subaru Forester in its latest review - that's just not its style - it did give the CUV a remarkably high overall score.

Praising its excellent fuel economy, visibility, roomy interior and a whole lot more, the testing publication bestowed an overall score of 88 out of 100 on the Forester. That's a really excellent number for just about any vehicle, but it's also a top-of-the-class mark for the Forester's small CUV division. Just about the only major gripe was that of ride quality.

Most of the direct competitors to the Forester have earned CR marks in the mid-70s. The Honda CR-V is some 11 points behind, for instance, while the Toyota RAV4 and the Mazda CX-5 earn scores of 75 and 74, respectively.

Awful smells often find their way into your car's interior and covering them up with air fresheners is not the best solution. Many drivers and passengers spend hours each day commuting inside their vehicles and these nasty smells can quickly come from almost anything including food and drinks being spilled, family pets or the stench of sweaty teenagers after sports practice!

The average car can collect dozens of unpleasant odours from virtually every item that goes inside your vehicle. A recent survey on air fresheners polled a group of stinky car owners to find out the worst smell they've ever had in their car and the results are nothing short of strange and disgusting.

So what's the worst smell? Click here to find out, as we countdown the Top 10 worst car smells according to the survey and video below.

"Just reset it." This is a request that is heard far too often in automotive service and repair facilities. Whether a vehicle is in for maintenance, or one of a plethora of warning lights has appeared on the dash, it seems the video game era mentality of just hitting restart has spilled over into some people's mindset when it comes to the care of their cars. Depending on the person, there are a wide number of reasons for this rather idiotic behavior. They either don't have a clue about what it means to maintain a car, they have more money than brains and figure they can abuse their cars until they trade them in for a new one, or they bought something they couldn't afford the upkeep on in order to put on airs of status. Hearing owners having an absolute meltdown and shouting "What do you mean you can't just turn the stupid light off?!?" has become more and more common, largely because the days of people having even a vague understanding about the technology they're rolling around in are long gone.

Part of the problem comes from certain shifts at the manufacturer level over the past couple of decades, one of the major contributors being the Service-Inclusive warranty. Although it sounds great on paper, having a service-inclusive plan give salespeople the ability to present this no-hassle, just gas-it-and-go presentation to customers. When the car gets older and costs are involved, these customers now have no clue about what they're up against. These are the same people that roll into a service center always assuming they're going to get screwed over. Education is a key part of car ownership that has long been neglected, and its time that consumers start devoting a bit more time to knowing their cars and what it takes to keep them running. If there's something you don't understand, ask a technician, or someone in the industry to explain it to you. It's one of the many reasons they're there.

Terry Box, a writer for the Dallas Morning News, was tootling down the Dallas North Tollway in a Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn pickup after work and enjoying the ride. Box thought the US$53,335, option-filled press loaner had been "flawless - very serious competition for anything built by Ford or Chevy." And then, for reasons that still aren't clear, something in the engine compartment caught fire and the Ram cremated itself on the shoulder of an off-ramp.

Box tells the story and it isn't an indictment of the truck, but a cautionary tale about how new vehicles don't burn like the old ones did - and why not to go back for your gym bag. It could also be a kind reminder about what kind of safety gear everyone should keep in their cars. Click the link to read the whole piece.

With over 250,000 cars reportedly damaged by Hurricane Sandy alone, prospective car buyers are cautioned to beware of shady opportunists looking to cash in on the disaster by selling flood-damaged vehicles to unsuspecting consumers. While the sale of flood damaged cars isn't a crime, deceitfully selling one without proper disclosure to its potential buyer clearly falls under an illegal activity in the eyes of the law.

According to insurance statistics and reports, thousands of "Superstorm Sandy" damaged vehicles may have already made their way back on to the resale market, as parties peddling these salvaged, stolen, repaired or reconditioned vehicles attempt to take advantage of flipping less-than-perfect cars for quick and easy profits.
As they say, if a deal sounds too good to be true... it probably is.

Beyond all the fanfare at the Mercedes-Benz booth at this year's Vancouver International Auto Show regarding the new SLS AMG GT Roadster, an interesting announcement surfaced about the launch of Canada's first-ever Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy for New Drivers. Rather than launching a performance driving operation, MB hopes to improve the base skill set of new drivers throughout the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

Now, with the sheer volume of new drivers in luxury vehicles roaming around the city, and the number of Benzes we see banged up while in the hands of rookie drivers like the one we reported on last fall, it isn't much of a surprise that this program is starting on the West Coast. Operating under the close supervision of the Mercedes Driving Academy in Germany, the program will take new drivers through all the necessary lessons needed to pass BC's graduated licencing program and avoid becoming yet another one of those horrible drivers this province is known for.

We are hoping for all involved that the program is a success. After all, being able to take drivers ed in a brand new C or B-class rather than your standard Corolla should be a no-brainer.

Filed under: Budget, Hatchback, Car Buying, Canada, Volkswagen, New Car Tips, Vancouver

When Volkswagen first announced they would be unveiling the all-new Super Beetle at the Vancouver International Auto Show (VIAS) our imaginations quickly ran wild with the idea of an AWD Beetle on steroids as seen in concept form at SEMA, as well as the Chicago Auto Show. Sadly, what we have been handed is a far cry from that.

Best we can tell, what has been introduced at VIAS 2013 is little more than a Turbo Beetle with some fancy trim detailing. It will come equipped with the 2.0L TFSI 4-cylinder packing 210 hp and will be heavily laden in standard equipment, including 19" alloys, a panorama glass roof, a premium Fender audio system, and 2-tone black and red leather interior. As well decked out as it is, this reads rather similarly to the R-line Beetle that was announced here back in December.

We can't say that we are not disappointed with this slightly lackluster unveiling, but nonetheless the new Super Beetle does look like it has some potential. With a starting MSRP of $32,850 we can only hope that it lives up to the legacy of the old Super Beetles of days gone by. You can expect to see the new Super Beetle in showrooms across Canada later this spring.

On a quick side note, if you're a real VW and Audi geek and the new Super Beetle really isn't your speed, don't worry, Audi also brought out the sexy new RS5 Convertible and SQ5 for enthusiasts to drool over.

Social media can allow direct and faster access to a person, a group or discussion of an issue, and that has led to wide ranging players in the automotive world figuring out how to use it in order to improve performance. Dealers encourage customers to use sites like Google+ and DealerRater.com for reviews, automakers like Hyundai and Chrysler have someone dedicated to watching Twitter for complaints, and agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration survey forums and websites for hints about possible auto defects.

Said Hyundai Motor America's executive vice president of sales on using Twitter to speak to customers, "The function is the same: People have problems, and we take care of the problems." The company's interaction with Twitterers didn't exist a year ago, but things could progress to the point where Twitter forms part of the way that dealer satisfaction surveys are submitted by the automaker. There's work to do and knowledge to gain before that happens, but it's envisioned in the field of play.

Bodies like the NHTSA are said to "routinely search" the web "for information that might lead to an investigation." By going straight to the sources where car buyers are highlighting issues with their cars, the NHTSA has a line into early indicators of issues that might be defects, and it can begin to gather data or can supplement the data it already has. The other side of the equation: Law firms are taking note as well, with a university professor saying the increased and more public exposure of potential issues "could mean higher litigation."
Continue reading How social media is changing the way car defects and complaints are discovered

How social media is changing the way car defects and complaints are discovered originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 31 Jan 2013 10:45:00 EST. Well, you're clearly not alone, as 79 per cent of all Canadian drivers confessed to feelings of road rage through a recent study by online insurance comparison service, Kanetix.ca.

As the growing road rage epidemic continues to spread across the country, this survey points the finger almost equally at both men (83 per cent) and women (72 per cent), who stated they have felt feelings of anger while driving.

Experts agree that the leading causes of road rage can be strongly linked to the increased number of cars on the road, longer commute times in traffic and fact that many people are simply driving more. However, the psychological aspect known to instigate the most extreme examples often has to do with a driver's perception of having been "insulted" which can bring on the worst anger.

"For instance in driving, if you are kind and let someone go in front of you, that driver may be considerate in response. But if you cut someone off, that person may react very aggressively, and this could escalate to road rage," explained University of Chicago psychology professor Boaz Keysar to LiveScience.com

These often used sales techniques are designed by some dishonest dealers and shady salesmen to make you feel like you're getting a great deal, even when you're not. Knowing what to expect and how to avoid some of these shady tactics is the first step towards protecting yourself and finding the best value on your next vehicle purchase.

Filed under: Car Buying, New Car Tips

How disinterested are consumers in their cars? According to a new study reported in The Detroit Free Press, more than 10 per cent of new car buyers can't be bothered to take a test drive.

The study, conducted by Maritz Research, surveyed over 80,000 people who had bought 2012 model year vehicles, and the final tally of those who didn't take a test drive was 11.4 per cent, according to the report. The implication is that with some 80 per cent of consumers doing their car research on the Internet, combined with a universal dislike of car sales practices, people are increasingly willing to buy a car almost sight unseen.

Dealers, oddly enough, are not happy about this trend, according to the report. The test drive is part of the dealer's arsenal of tactics to get people excited enough to part with their hard earned cash. As one former dealership representative told the Freep, "The feel of the wheel will seal the deal."

But the test drive can also be a crucial determiner for consumers, especially when car shoppers do an adequate job of comparing different vehicles by undertaking thorough test drives. No matter how good a model might look on paper or how glowingly some "professional" car reviewer might describe it, there's no replacement for actually getting it out on the road and experiencing it yourself.

Among the best reasons to buy a new car are the safety improvements that have been made across the industry over the past decade. Yet safer cars for drivers and passengers haven't meant an improvement for first responders. On the contrary, the added complexity and new technologies employed in modern vehicles routinely frustrate firefighters attempting to save occupants involved in a crash.

According to USA Today, part of the problem facing rescuers is just knowing what hazards might be lurking beneath the sheetmetal. From high-strength steel that's difficult to cut to airbags hidden in every nook and cranny, rescuers face not just frustration, but real danger. Like high-voltage systems in hybrids and electric cars, some of which can be difficult to tell apart from conventional models, according to the report.

To complicate all of this, firefighters are often left in the dark by automakers, and when they do get to practice on vehicles, often those are older models. But things are changing, as industry groups, including the Society of Automotive Engineers, are working on addressing some of these new challenges. The engineering group is close to recommending a new standardized labeling system for electrified vehicles, according to the report.

Most of us depend on our vehicles to get us where we need to go, anywhere and anytime. Although fuel efficiency is a very hot topic among new car buyers, overall reliability also remains at the top of the checklist when shopping for your next car.

So how do you know if a car is really reliable? Well, according to Forbes recent list of 'tough' cars, a reliable vehicle is designed to weather all conditions and soldier on without complaint, while less reliable cars have a strong appetite for expensive parts and require repairs a little too often.

While it isn't easy to predict which new cars are going to be the most reliable for consumers, there are a number ways to determine which have the best odds of doing so. After reading through a number of dependability reports and safety tests performed by J.D. Power and Associates, Consumer Reports and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), we couldn't help but slightly disagree with some of the Forbes findings. We wanted to select our own recommendations for a top 10 list using a similar formula combined with our test drive feedback from previous reviews.

On first glance, General Motors seems to have a lot to crow about in the latest JD Power APEAL rankings. After all, its Chevrolet brand claimed three segment awards - the most of any single brand - and Cadillac finished tied for eighth place overall in the 2012 edition of the study. But upon closer inspection, the results may not be quite so rosy for The General.

The APEAL study ranks new vehicles for how "gratifying" they are, based on owner evaluations of some 80 attributes. Yes, this is something of an automotive popularity contest. And the problem for GM is that, overall, its customers just don't like its products as much as those who buy from other carmakers.

Buick, Chevrolet and GMC all scored below the industry average in the 2012 APEAL study. Despite Cadillac's top ten ranking, the only luxury brands it managed to beat were Acura, Lincoln and Volvo, luxury bottom-feeders all. To be fair, we should note that Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and Nissan also failed to finish above the industry average, though both Ford and Chrysler did, but barely.

The Chevrolet vehicles that claimed segment awards sent something of a mixed message. While the Sonic finishing first among subcompacts has to be seen as a huge win for GM, the other segment awards went to the Volt and Avalanche, in the compact and large pickup categories, respectively. The Volt is a great car, but it isn't a volume product and the Avalanche is a dead truck walking, slated to go out of production after the 2013 model year. The only other GM vehicle to make the top three in any segment was the Cadillac Escalade in the mostly moribund Large Premium Crossover/SUV. Nary a Buick or GMC is to be found on the list in any position.

Meanwhile, down I-94 in Dearborn, MI Ford has six vehicles in the top three in their respective segments, including winners in Large Crossover/SUV (Expedition) and Midsize Crossover/SUV (Flex). Even Chrysler managed to snag two segment awards (Dodge Challenger and Charger) and land three other vehicles in the top three in their segments.

If we really wanted to crown an APEAL winner, that title might just go to Audi, whose A8 had the highest score of any model and also won a segment award for the A6, while placing third overall. Porsche, however, could rightly lay the best claim to the 2012 APEAL championship, considering it had the highest brand score and won two segments, for the 911 and Cayenne.

Hybrid vehicles are quickly gaining more popularity these days, especially with gas prices expected to continue climbing. Long gone are the days when gas cost less than a dollar a litre; the last time the average price of regular gasoline dipped below the loonie was back in the summer of 2010.

Today's consumers buy hybrid cars knowing they'll be able to save money on high fuel costs, but are they aware hybrid insurance rates are on the rise? According to online quote comparison website Kanetix.ca, hybrid auto insurance quotes increased 18 per cent in 2011 compared to 2010. Some of the most popular hybrids based on the site's auto insurance shoppers include: Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Lexus CT 200h, Honda Insight, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Lexus RX 400h and Honda CR-Z Hybrid.
Power has become a household name thanks to the organization's yearly awards based on in-depth consumer surveys about all manner of goods and services. In the automotive industry, manufacturers constantly struggle to best each other for top honors, and that struggle has helped push the industry toward ever-better quality. But as Ward's Auto points out, few people know the man behind the name.

James David Power III began licensing manufacturers to use his award in advertisements in 1986, two years after Subaru dropped the J.D. Power name in a Super Bowl ad.

In 2005, Power sold J.D. Power and Associates to publishing giant McGraw-Hill, but stayed on with the company until 2009. Even after his departure, Ward's Auto says Power is proud of the empire he helped build. While outlets like Consumer Reports have gained a substantial following, the organization only polls its own subscribers, while J.D. Power takes its data from a larger cross section of consumers.

Using a separate operation to keep conflicts of interest at bay, companies must pay a fee to be able to use the J.D. Power name in their ads. Yet J.D. Power is not without controversy - auto companies pay substantial fees for access to its various quality metrics and counsel, leading critics to suggest there's a conflict of interest in having a quality auditor paid by the very companies it monitors. In addition, critics note that the company's much ballyhooed Initial Quality Study isn't purely a study of manufacturing defects, but rather an arcane formula that mixes actual owner problems with design flaws (think: cupholders that can't hold a Venti Frappucino from Starbucks). As most consumers are likely to equate the idea of quality with a product free of problems, the thought is that this is somewhat misleading methodology.

Either way, there's no doubting J.D. Power's impact on the auto biz - both the company and the man who bears its name. To learn more about him, check out the in-depth Ward's Auto article at the link below.

We've long maintained that we live in the best era of automotive history to date. Today's vehicles are safer, more efficient, faster, more powerful and more controllable than ever before.

Need proof? In an age dominated by talk of ever tighter fuel economy regulations, buyers now have access to a staggering number of vehicles with more than 500 horsepower. Just 10 years ago, if you wanted to bring home a showroom stock vehicle with that kind of power, your options were limited to either the Ferrari 575M or the Lamborghini Murcielago. Now there are over 70 models with that kind of grunt on tap!

All told, there are over eighteen brands with at least one 500+hp model for sale in their ranks right now. Even better, those dyno numbers are being accomplished with smaller, more fuel-efficient engines. While most of the big-power vehicles come from European brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi, General Motors and Ford have also entered the fray lately. Chrysler will do the same with the company's soon-to-be-unveiled SRT Viper.

Interestingly enough, buyers have an even loftier horsepower goal to look toward these days. Of every car sold in the North America, just 13 produce more than 600 horsepower.
