While our pals south of the border have been able to enjoy the latest iteration of the newest version of the Mercedes-Benz SLS since last November, the brand has taken its sweet time in bringing it in to Canada. With so few manufacturers bringing their Canadian debuts to the Vancouver International Auto Show this year, it's nice to see that Benz was willing to bring out their top-gun, even if it has already been around the block a few times.

Mercedes-Benz upgraded its SLS flagship Coupe and Roadster for the 2013 model year, and the changes are marked with the new "GT" nomenclature. Both SLS models arrive with a retuned naturally aspired 6.2-litre V8 delivering 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque (the horses are up from 563, but the torque remains the same) mated to a revised seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch gearbox. Rounding out the mechanical upgrades is a redeveloped AMG two-mode adaptive suspension.

A number of enhancements have been made to the SLS' interior with the introduction of the GT model, including a new Designo style package. This optional extra comes in three different colour combinations - in both single- and two-tone finishes - and features only the finest leather surfaces with contrast stitching and a diamond quilt pattern on the seats and doors. Sounds plush. Of course, plenty of other optional goodies are also available, including carbon fibre parts for both the interior and exterior, carbon ceramic brakes, a Bang & Olufsen sound system and different wheel options.

All of these minor tweaks and added power will come at a cost, as the Canadian MSRP for the 2013 SLS AMG GT Roadster is $224,200, which is roughly $11,000 more than the base roadster was in 2012.

Autoweek reports the next Chrysler 200 will bow early next year. CEO Sergio Marchionne has said the 2015 model will debut next January, and Chrysler plans to cut the 2014 200 model year short to make way for the model's successor. According to AW, internal documents reveal 2014 model production will start this July and run through early January, 2014. The memos don't specify whether its Dodge Avenger twin will also see a shortened model year (the latter was originally rumoured for discontinuation, but a successor is apparently back on the table). Chrysler is investing some US$1 billion to construct paint and body facilities at its Sterling Heights, Michigan plant for the next-generation 200.

From what we've heard so far, we can expect the 2015 200 to bring a new design language to the Chrysler brand that will eventually bleed into the automaker's other products. Early reports have also suggested the four door will boast a nine-speed automatic transmission and return up to 6.2 L/100km (38 mpg).

Chrysler executed a very successful facelift in 2011, turning the flailing Sebring into the newly minted 200. Buyers responded enthusiastically, with sales jumping 44 per cent in 2012. That step up was enough to make the 200 the brand's best-selling car. The momentum hasn't slackened, either, with sales up 21 per cent during the first two months of this year.

To watch Eminem drive the Chrysler 200 and tell us why we should... hit the jump.

Wagons ho! These three images of the upcoming Volkswagen Golf Wagon have leaked online ahead of the car's official debut, which may very well be at the Geneva Motor Show. Looking over the photos doesn't really bring any surprises - after all, this is a VW Golf with a wagon rear end grafted on, or basically what we expect the next Jetta SportWagen will be.

We can only share these three images at this time, but fret not, folks. There's little doubt that all the details and images will be flowing from Volkswagen in short order. In the meantime, click on the images below to view them in high resolution and click here to view a video on VW's new hybrid tech.

Chevrolet showed off the new 2014 SS in an airport hangar this weekend, and it's clear that this new performance sedan will be far more entertaining than the front-wheel drive Chevrolet Impala. This is the sedan that Chevrolet sees as the final piece in restoring its performance credentials. For those of you looking for a manual transmission, however, that wish will go unfulfilled - at least for now: the only two options buyers will have are the colour and whether or not they want a sunroof.

What lies beneath the skin was designed by GM's Australian subsidiary, Holden. We're pleased to have officially confirmed that GM is bringing this performance Holden to North American shores under the badge of the 2014 Chevrolet SS.

Sadly, General Motors has also announced the 2014 Chevrolet SS will not be available in Canada. The Globe and Mail reports the automaker has confirmed the high-performance sedan won't hit Canadian dealers, though GM hasn't offered up any reasoning as to why that is.

We're working on gathering more live shots, so for now, enjoy the high-res gallery above and click through to check out technical details.
Continue reading 2014 Chevrolet SS makes its live debut

2014 Chevrolet SS makes its live debut originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Mon, 18 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST.

Filed under: Budget, Canada, Mitsubishi, Concept Cars, Montreal Auto Show, New Cars

It seems the catalog of available sub-compact city-cars is getting bigger for Canadians in 2013. Alongside Honda's GEAR Concept, Mitsubishi has announced that its Concept Global Small Car will be coming to North America in 2013. This pint sized 5-door hatch was previously unveiled in JDM-spec at the Tokyo Auto Show but as of now it is not clear how different in spec the North American version will be.

Although Mitsubishi's sub-compact isn't exactly groundbreaking in styling, it seems we might be in for some good numbers in terms of fuel efficiency. Upping the displacement from its JDM 1.0L to a 1.2L 3-cylinder, the econo-mill comes in at a whopping 74 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque. Mitsubishi claims much effort was spent on making the chassis as light as possible so we can only hope it will take less than three days to make it from 0-100km/h!

As with most of Mistubishi's lineup of late, it is clear the focus will be on selling reliability and efficiency on a budget, and with this tiny run-about in the mix they may be right on target. look for this yet, unnamed Mitsu to arrive in showrooms this Fall.

The 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid will hit dealers near the end of 2012, and here are the details.

For that price, buyers will be treated to a vehicle packed with a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a 27-horsepower electric motor. Total system output is rated at 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and the only transmission on offer is a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. According to Volkswagen's estimates, the Jetta Hybrid will return a combined fuel economy rating of 5.2 L/100KM (45 miles per gallon), making it the most fuel-efficient model in the Jetta range. The Hybrid will sprint to 0-96 kilometres per hour (60 miles per hour) in just under nine seconds, and it can even cruise in EV mode at speeds as high as 70 km/h (44 mph).

Unlike other automakers that force you to spec a certain trim level in order to get the hybrid technology, Volkswagen is launching its gasoline-electric Jetta in four different configurations. The base model, simply called Hybrid, nets you daytime running lights, power/heated mirrors, 15-inch alloy wheels, Climatronic climate control, Bluetooth and a host of other class-standard features.

Moving up from there, the Hybrid SE - adds LED taillights, power reclining front seats, a MDI audio interface with iPod connectivity, a premium touchscreen radio, Sirius and keyless access. And for a few thousand extra, you can spec the Hybrid SEL which includes goodies like 16-inch alloys, a power sunroof, navigation, heated washer nozzles, heated seats and a full-power driver's seat. At the top of the range is the Hybrid SEL Premium, featuring niceties like bi-xenon headlamps with LED running lights, foglights, 17-inch wheels, a rear-view camera and Volkswagen's excellent Fender audio system. We are awaiting exact Canadian pricing so check back soon.

For comparison, the not-quite-as-efficient (but likely more fun to drive) Jetta TDI - rated at 5.6 L/100 KM (42 mpg) highway - starts at $23,875, and loading one up will set you back $27,175, excluding destination.

Ford obviously thinks it was on to something good when it decided to offer its Lincoln MKZ sedan with a no-cost hybrid option, as the Blue Oval will now be taking a similar tack with its new Fusion Titanium. For $33,999 CAD, the range-topping 2013 Ford Fusion Titanium can be equipped with either the sporty 2.0-litre EcoBoost and all-wheel drive or hybrid power and front-wheel drive.

At launch, the 2013 Fusion Hybrid will only be available in mid-grade SE trim, but starting early next year, Ford will add a Titanium model that includes sportier exterior styling and a more premium cabin. This trim level will come standard with tech features like a 12-speaker Sony audio system, MyFord Touch, parking sensors and luxury items like power front seats, leather seats and 18-inch polished alloys. It isn't clear if the Fusion Hybrid Titanium's starting price includes the $795 destination charge, but when optioning up a Fusion Hybrid SE with similar equipment, it's right in the same neighborhood at sround $34,500 CAD.

For those keeping track, the fully loaded Fusion Hybrid Titanium is just a step under the $37,098 CAD 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, with which it shares its chassis. Scroll down to see Ford's full presser on this new trim.
Continue reading Ford adds Titanium trim to 2013 Fusion Hybrid

Ford adds Titanium trim to 2013 Fusion Hybrid originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 02 Oct 2012 17:46:00 EST.
News flash: trucks are popular in the U.S. and Canada and subcompacts just aren't. While most of the customer loyalty stats we generally hear about are focused on brands, Inside Line recently did a study tracking how loyal customers are to a particular vehicle segment by tracking which vehicles customers trade in when purchasing a new car.

Not surprisingly, full-size trucks had the most loyal customers with almost two-thirds (61.8 per cent) of truck buyers opting for another truck. Vans and minivans round out the top three spots, which makes sense, as vehicles in those segments are generally needed for a specific purpose. Luxury vehicles took up four of the top 10 categories.

On the opposite end, only 15.1 per cent of subcompact car buyers return to the segment with midsize and large crossovers finishing off the bottom three of the list. Despite being two of the most popular vehicles on the road, midsize cars were in the middle of the pack and compact crossovers were ranked 18 out of the 22 categories.

One segment we would really like to have seen on this list was hybrids to see if it backed up reports from earlier this year that said hybrid buyers generally don't buy another.

Just weeks before the Paris Motor Show, Ford Motor Co. has taken the wraps off of much of its new lineup for Europe in an effort to shore up its efforts for European dealers. The webcast press conference from Amsterdam ended with the official announcement that the Dearborn, Michigan-based car maker will officially make the Mustang available for Autobahn runs and cobble stone street drifting.

"We'll have more details on the Mustang coming to Europe later this year." CEO Alan Mulally said, as he stood before a crowd of more than 2,500 dealers, enthusiasts and reporters. Thousands more watched him and other key Ford executives tout the company's accelerated plans to introduce more global vehicles to Europe.

The Old Country has been problematic in recent years as its stagnant economy has cost automakers billions. Ford lost around CAD$404 million in Europe in the second quarter of 2012 and expects Europe to continue to drag down the company's global profitability in the near future. But instead of going on the defensive, Ford has launched its own path to prosperity, Mulally said. The company can't afford to try the same old formulas.

"Six years ago, we developed our One Ford plan,"
Mulally said, "Now, we're bringing that plan to Europe."

Nissan has unleashed a new ad campaign aimed directly at all of you football fans out there. The six commercials all feature former Heisman Trophy winners as they shack up in the "Heisman House," including 2011 winner Robert Griffin III as the rookie.

Other familiar faces also make a showing, including the sport's only two-time Heisman winner, Archie Griffin from The Ohio State University, as well as Herschel Walker and Matt Leinart. All in all, the ads boast 12 trophy winners and one professional actor. Sean Astin (star of Rudy) shows up for a spell alongside everyone else.

What does all this have to do with Nissan? Not much... aside from the fact that a few of the company's 2013 models show up on screen briefly. We get glimpses of machines like the Leaf, Altima, Pathfinder, Titan and 370Z Roadster between scenes of somewhat stilted dialog.

A convoy of self-driven Volvo vehicles just completed a 200km (125-mile) journey in Spain on public roadways. The cars were wirelessly linked to each other and "mimicked" a lead vehicle, driven by a professional driver. The test convoy used for this self-drive experiment included three passenger cars and a large transport truck set at 85kph (52mph) with the gap between each vehicle just 6 meters (19 feet).

The cars are fitted with special features such as cameras, radar and laser sensors - allowing the vehicle to monitor the lead vehicle and also other vehicles in their immediate vicinity. Using wireless communication, the vehicles in the platoon "mimic" the lead vehicle using autonomous control - accelerating, braking and turning in exactly the same way as the leader

This test was developed by Volvo to showcase their latest technology, aimed to lead us into a new age of relaxed self-driving in the near future. The so-called road train test was carried out as part of a European Commission research project known as Sartre - Safe Road Trains for the Environment.

According to Volvo, drivers "can now work on their laptops, read a book or sit back and enjoy a relaxed lunch" while driving. "Driving among other road-users is a great milestone in our project. It was truly thrilling," says Linda Wahlstroem, project manager for the Sartre project at Volvo Car Corporation.

"People think that autonomous driving is science fiction, but the fact is that the technology is already here. From the purely conceptual viewpoint, it works fine and road train will be around in one form or another in the future," says Wahlstroem.

The three-year Sartre project has been under way since 2009. Other partners include UK car technology firm Ricardo UK, Tecnalia Research & Innovation of Spain, Institut fur Kraftfahrzeuge Aachen (IKA) of Germany and the Technical Research Institute of Sweden.

All told, the vehicles in the project have covered about 10,000km on test circuits.

The eventual aim of the project is to have lots of cars "slaved" to a lead vehicle and travelling at high speed along specific routes.

The current Infiniti G has soldiered on since the 2009 model year with few updates, so it is about time for a design change. But how much longer do we have to wait? Inside Line reports that the new G will arrive next spring with a new design, fresh engines and a possible hybrid variant.

Nissan VP Andy Palmer reportedly let loose the G's tight time line, while providing room for us to speculate what engineering changes could come with the redesign. The high-ranking executive told IL that the partnership between Nissan and Mercedes-Benz is progressing as planned, and we know that a four-cylinder engine is among the early collaborative endeavors. In fact, just last week Autocar reported that the next G will feature diesel and four-cylinder engines with Mercedes DNA.

Such a powerplant could replace the 2.5-litre V6 under the hood of the G25, and turbocharging could be on order as well. Palmer added that a turbocharged six could also be in the cards, noting that there is a business case for blown sixes that deliver V8 power with V6 fuel economy. Given that the entry Infiniti sedan doesn't currently feature a V8 option, we're all for more G-power for 2014.

The last interesting tidbit is the possibility of a G hybrid model. The addition of a battery-assisted G makes sense given that the automaker already features a hybrid option in its M sedan, and using the powertrain in more applications helps lower development costs.

When General Motors put down several of its brands in recent years, it also let loose thousands of brand-loyal customers who will eventually need another car.

R.L. Polk Associates estimates there are more than 18 million cars from 16 discontinued makes on the road today. Those "orphan owners" have sales-hungry competitors seeing dollar signs. GM in the US is offering Saturn owners US$1,000 cash toward a Chevy Cruze, Cadillac CTS or a GMC Acadia. Ford is giving its Mercury lease customers a chance to get out of their contracts with no early-termination penalty and offering to waive six remaining payments if they drive off in a Ford or Lincoln.

Edmunds.com research shows the efforts are paying off somewhat for GM, with 39 percent of Pontiac owners, 37 percent of Hummer owners and 31 percent of Saturn owners taking delivery of another GM-branded vehicle. But that leaves as much as 69 percent of owners going elsewhere. Ford, Honda and Toyota seem to be attracting many former GM owners.

As Forbes points out, if you're driving an orphaned nameplate, you just might be able to use that to your advantage when shopping for a new vehicle.

Nothing to see here, kids, unless you like watching powerful V8s with orotund exhaust notes kicking up walls of snow via a right-pedal workout and heaps of opposite lock. If that's the case, there is something to see here, and it's a promo vid for the AMG Driving Academy Winter Sporting held in Sweden.

This video is merely highlights. But if you like it, then you can book a trip to Moder Svea for this year's sessions. Click here for ice sculptures of rooster tails.
Continue reading AMG shows off by making snow drifts

AMG shows off by making snow drifts originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 08 May 2012 19:00:00 EST.
We loved the hilarious Super Bowl ad for the coming-some-day-but-not-anytime-soon Acura NSX starring Jerry Seinfeld, but we really wish it would have popped back onto our radar for a different reason than this. (Like a production announcement from Honda.) TMZ is reporting that when the commercial was cast, the ad the agency responsible had sought an African-American actor to play the car dealer who was, "Nice looking, friendly. Not too dark." And the website has a copy of the document to prove it.

To paraphrase one of Seinfeld's catch phrases: "Yes, there's everything wrong with that."

While we'd like to think that some day the obvious interpretation might be that the casting director was referring to the actor's mood, clearly that's not the case here. TMZ says an unnamed source associated with the commercial told it that "not too dark" had something to do with lighting and special effects, and we hope that's true. Still, the way the brief description reads, it certainly sounds like whomever was casting the spot thinks dark-skinned people are neither nice nor friendly.

We're not about to throw Honda under the bus - it was, after all, an outside ad agency named RP& that shot the ad, according to Motoramic - as the automaker apologized, issuing the following statement:

We apologize to anyone offended by the language on the casting sheet used in the selection of actors for one of our commercials.

We sought to cast an African-American in a prominent role in the commercial, and we made our selection based on the fact that he was the most talented actor.

The casting sheet was only now brought to our attention. We are taking appropriate measures to ensure that such language is not used again in association with any work performed on behalf of our brand.

While we're glad to see Honda react promptly and properly, re-watching the commercial gave us further pause: If Honda indeed sought to cast an African-American in a prominent role, did it consider an African-American for the part of the guy who's first on the list for the NSX, as opposed to the salesperson?

Click past the break to watch the commercial for yourself.
Continue reading Acura apologizes after casting "not too black" actor in Super Bowl ad

Acura apologizes after casting "not too black" actor in Super Bowl ad originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 08:28:00 EST.
A few years ago we brought you a report on the speculative values of Pagani supercars. Whether as investments or frivolous purchases, those with the means, it seemed, were paying well above list price to get their hands on one of the rarest supercars on (or off) the market. But that was just as the world was on the brink of financial collapse. Surely with the economy still in the drink years later, nobody's paying those kinds of figures for something as extravagant as an exotic sportscar... right?

Wrong. In fact, it seems, the value for Paganis has only gone up. According to Evo magazine editor-in-chief (and Zonda owner) Harry Metcalfe, buyers with the means are paying as much as double the already grandiose list price to get their hands on a Zonda or Huayra. Apparently the white Huayra that Pagani displayed at the Geneva Motor Show never reached the Middle Eastern buyer who ordered it a year prior and was supposed to take delivery after the show, having flipped it to another buyer who was willing to pay him an astounding 1.8 million euros for the car. That's about CAD$2.35 million in Canuck bucks, or twice the 900,000 euro (CAD$1.18m) list price.

Think that was an isolated incident? Hardly. A Zonda F Roadster (said to be the last ever made), a 2008 Zonda F coupe and a used Zonda C12S were all, according to Metcalfe's sources, recently sold for double their original MSRPs. So if you've been scrimping and saving every dime to get your hands on a Pagani, better keep saving.

Cancer sucks. And pediatric cancer sucks the worst. Without hesitation, we would trade all the exotic cars in the world for a cure.

But you know what doesn't suck? The new Viper. So it's pretty cool that Chrysler will auction off the first one to benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation For Pediatric Cancer. The organization, based in Chattanooga, TN, is an official charity of the American Le Mans Series, which is presumably why it was picked. At the Viper reveal at New York, Chrysler also announced it would resume racing in the series.

So the first 2013 SRT Viper will cross the stage at Barrett-Jackson Orange County, which goes down June 22-24. It'll be interesting to see what it brings in, considering the first 2013 Chevrolet Corvette 427 convertible's $600,000 hammer price earlier this year at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale.

And if you aren't deep-pocketed enough to get in on the Viper hunt, helping out the Hatcher Foundation doesn't require bidding - you can make a donation at the organization's website.

We already had reason to believe that the next generation of the Infiniti G is poised to add a few new variants, including a diesel model, thanks to recent Nissan trademark filings. But now our spy shooters have caught some Infiniti development mules out in the wild, cars they say sounded like diesels.

There's not too much that can be seen in these photos, as the mule uses a modified current-gen body. But the car definitely looks like it has a wider track, which could point to the next G being a bit larger (or at least meaning it's not going to shrink). We can also see two extra air intakes in the front bumper, just under the grille.

The photographers tell us that the cars were snapped near a Mercedes-Benz test facility in Northern Sweden, leading us to assume that a diesel G is likely to be powered by an engine developed out of the Daimler-Renault-Nissan partnership that was announced two years ago.

Check out all the high-res spy shots in our gallery.
Next-gen Infiniti G mule spotted testing in Sweden originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 15:31:00 EST.
Last week we brought you Inside Line's list of the 10 cars most likely to be owned by a women. The Volvo S40 came out on top among the ladies. But what's most likely to be owned by a guy? Minivans? Fuel-efficient hatchbacks? Hybrids?

No.

At the top of Inside Line's list is the very masculine, testosterone-oozing Ferrari 458 Italia. It should be no surprise that 95.3% of 458 owners are men. We sure would like to meet the other 4.7%.

Ahem. Anyway, in second place is the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, then the Audi R8, the Mercedes SLS AMG and then, at No. 5, the Ferrari California. So far, we've pretty much recited every male motorhead's ultimate wish list. Seriously, what self-respecting man doesn't put himself to sleep every night running through the gears of any of those cars?

At No. 6, is the perennial Porsche 911, then the Nissan GT-R at No. 7 with 87.9% male ownership. No. 8 is the obligatory GMC Sierra pickup closely followed by the Ford F-Series at No. 9. Rounding out the list at No. 10 is the consummate mid-life crisis Chevy Corvette with 86.9% male ownership.

So where does that leave the Ford F-650? Are there really that many women buying that monster?

Audi told us a new R8 was coming, and now our spy shooters have caught it in action testing. The good news is that the car still looks stunning. The bad news is that's because the original R8 design has aged so well.

What we're seeing in these photos doesn't indicate much has changed outside of minor tweaks to the front fascia that seem mostly designed to accommodate new headlights with a different LED pattern. The rear fascia and taillights are similarly reconfigured, with round twin tailpipes like the R8 GT, but without the side ducting.

When they sent us the images, KPG Photography also speculated that this forthcoming R8 update will ditch the R-tronic sequential automatic transmission for a dual-clutch gearbox. That's in line with rumours we've heard for the next-generation R8, which indicate that the DSG will be the only transmission available.

We've got shots of both the coupe R8 and the R8 Spyder, including some taken at night where it's easier to see the new LED designs. Check out all the high-res spy shot images in our gallery.
