When the Lamborghini Veneno was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show, there were those who connected dots from it to the Lamborghini Pregunta concept from 1998, and also to the Pagani Zonda that arrived one year later. Near the end of the turmoil that was Lamborghini's business through the mid-nineties, an order was placed by the French Carrosserie Heuliez for a one-off concept car that was "new, original and impossible to confuse with any other car's shapes," that would be built on a Diablo chassis. The result was the Pregunta.

It was an aerospace-influenced supercar with carbon fibre bodywork, a 530-horsepower V12 and a claimed 333 km/h (207 mph) top speed. It employed rear-wheel drive instead of the Diablo's all-wheel drive, was coated in the same paint used on the French military's Dassault Rafale fighter jet and had fibre optic lighting, rear-view cameras and a GPS system. It was shown to the world at the 1998 Paris Motor Show, and again at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show.

Thought to be the last concept built on a Lamborghini body before Audi bought the company in 1998, AutoDrome, a French specialist in vintage exotics, has the Pregunta for sale for 1.6 million euros ($2,138,000 CAD). You can watch it hit the runway with a Rafale in the video below, then give AutoDrome a call if you're interested.

Police in Paris fired teargas at demonstrators outside of the Paris Motor Show today. Around 1,000 protesters showed up in an attempt to break through police lines and gain access to the show in a demonstration against further austerity measures. The group included workers from a PSA Peugeot Citroen plant that's scheduled for closure, and some demonstrators threw eggs and flour at police. The group also reportedly included workers from other manufacturers that have announced job cuts.

The standoff is part of nationwide demonstrations as France continues to struggle with an unemployment rate parked at over 10 per cent. Lawmakers in the country are currently deciding on whether or not to back a European Union agreement that will see France agree to balance its finances in an attempt to slow the continent's debt crisis. Such austerity measures are unpopular in France, and were the leading issue driving former President Nicolas Sarkozy from office. Socialist President Francois Hollande earned the office after campaigning on a platform that promised to tackle the French deficit without stifling growth or imposing austerity measures.

The CGT labor union has responded to the EU agreement by organizing this week's demonstrations.

Porsche's heart lives in the rear end of the 911. The heart of Mercedes-Benz resides more in the brand values of the Three-Pointed Star than any one model. Mini is defined by petite packages wrapped in giant amounts of sass. Since the end of the Series III XJ in 1992, however, what has represented the unique and irreducible definition of Jaguar?

We're certain Jaguar is happy that the above question is moot, thanks to the arrival of the F-Type at the Paris Motor Show. Jaguar brand manager Adrian Hallmark tells Autocar that the convertible is "the core of our range, and from now on it is our orientation point" - it is the E-Type for our times, and will lead the way for Jaguars to come. We don't know fully what that means yet; until we drive it, it isn't clear if the champagne and confetti party of the F-Type's introduction will end in afterglow or hangover. Nevertheless, there is at least a direction now, which is a major waypoint.

It will start with - surprise, surprise - a small sedan and a utility vehicle. We've heard for ages that a BMW 3 Series rival had been dancing across drawing boards, and after years of equivocation, it looks like an SUV/CUV may have finally been acceded to. Hallmark tells Autocar that "Whatever we do will be driven by the three pillars of our brand: innovation, design and performance leadership," by which he presumably means "driven by the huge sales opportunities and cha-ching!" We don't blame him; the market segment is hurtling in that direction and leaving all those pounds on the table would be something the old Jaguar would do. Obviously, those days are over. All hail the F-Type.

Say one thing for Peugeot at its home Paris Motor Show this season: the company knows how to run with a theme. Peugeot, some might argue, stole the 2012 show with its Onyx supercar concept; that car has an Onyx Scooter Concept that matches it in livery (if not performance). But, perhaps the most realistic vehicle to wear the matte black and copper attire is this hotted-up RCZ R Concept.

Now, don't let that "Concept" bit on the end of the formal name fool you too much - the company out and out says that the RCZ R will show up as a production model at the end of 2013.

That's great news if you've been considering an RCZ but had hoped for a bit more performance from the fashion-forward coupe. The Peugeot Sport development group plans to fit the production RCZ R with a 260-horsepower, 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, Torsen limited slip differential and revised wheels and suspension. We're guessing that the stealthy black paint and copper roof rails will be for the concept car only - but with the French, you never know...
Continue reading Peugeot RCZ R Concept is an unsubtle hint at performance coupe to come

Peugeot RCZ R Concept is an unsubtle hint at performance coupe to come originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Sun, 07 Oct 2012 16:00:00 EST.
Mercedes-Benz took a moment at the Paris Motor Show to display its Aesthetics S Concept. Built as a combination static, physical sculpture and audio-visual presentation, the design exercise lends a glimpse at what we can expect to see from the next-generation S-Class. Mercedes-Benz projected a number of scenes onto the relief to highlight the design's lines and lineage, including images of W189, W108 and W126 S-Class models. Aligning the images of the S-Class ancestors with the new designs is a clever way to draw parallels between new and old.

Gordon Wagener, head of design for Mercedes-Benz, says the Aesthetics S Concept does more than point toward what's coming down the pike for the S-Class. The display also outlines what's in store for the rest of the company's products. Take a look at the Aesthetics S Concept in the video below for a better idea of what the next-generation of Mercedes-Benz products may look like.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz previews next S-Class with Aesthetics S Concept

Mercedes-Benz previews next S-Class with Aesthetics S Concept originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 17:44:00 EST.
Do you ever look at automotive clips from auto shows and reviews and think to yourself: "those guys have the best job ever!" On the surface it can look like it's all fun and games. I mean, how hard can checking out new cars, reviewing them and reporting on them really be?

You've all seen our coverage on the 2012 Paris Motor Show in all it's slick and polished glory. But here's a glimpse of the reality of what it can be like to try to report, live from somewhere as busy and crowded at one of the largest auto shows in the world.

It can be pretty frustrating having to shoot the same clip or get the same shot a million times due to distractions and the ever present photobomb or in this case, videobomb.

Watch this video as one journalist from XCAR tries to just roll with the hits and laugh or cry with him as the frustration mounts.

After the mini-people mover's introduction in 2010, the 2013 Toyota Verso signals a significant mid-cycle refresh for the model.

Changes for the 2013 Verso include visual updates to the front and rear - new headlights, LED running lights, taillights etc. - as well as other exterior tweaks. The inside has been refined as well, with more soft-touch materials, satin chrome trim and cool new lighting; just what the small, modern European family needs to motor in happiness.

Getting it all right is important, too, if Toyota hopes to meet its own lofty sales goals for the MPV - the company stated that it wants to sell 50,000 Versos in 2013, which would give the vehicle five percent of the European market for its segment.

Take a closer look at the freshened 2013 Toyota Verso, live on its stand at the Paris show, in our gallery of images. Full details are available in the press blast posted below.

When we first saw the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf in the manufacturer-provided stock photos, we were a little let down. In a word, it looked... droopy. But now that we've seen Volkswagen's new global hatch in person, we have to say, it's a handsome little thing.

Perhaps the most remarkable fact about the new Golf is that it's a full 220 pounds lighter than the outgoing model. That's all thanks to the new MQB platform that underpins the compact VW, which uses lightweight, high-strength steel in droves.

In Europe, buyers will be able to choose from a range of gasoline and diesel powerplants, including a new 1.4-litre turbocharged inline-four that's reportedly good for about 4.8 L/100km (49 miles per gallon) (on the European cycle). Here in the North America, rumour has it that the aging 2.5-litre inline-five will be swapped out for a new 1.8-litre turbo-four. And we don't see any reason why the lovely 2.0-litre turbodiesel unit won't carry over, as well.

Check out a fresh batch of Golf images live from the Paris Motor Show floor in our gallery above, and scroll down to thumb through Volkswagen's press release.

Last week, we were able to bring you all of the details regarding Peugeot's new 208 Type R5 rally car, but there was only a shadowy teaser image with which to illustrate the pre-production rally titan.

Thankfully, with our meticulous shooters combing the floor, we now have a good long look at the Peugeot 208 R5, which the French automaker confirms will race next year in series like the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, European Rally Championship and the National Championships.

The 208 R5 is, of course, just as racy as we'd hoped, with a wheels-at-the-absolute-corners stance, huge white shoes wearing hometown Michelin rubber, a sizable rear wing and sporty graphics as far as the eye can see. Don't get used to seeing it in quite so gleaming a shade of white, however, as this one little guy is destined to get dirty, fast.

Sexy as MPVs are, the new Carens wasn't the only world premiere happening on the Kia stand at today's Paris Motor Show. Here, we see the new three-door Pro_cee'd hatchback - a sharp-looking car that shares many of its underpinnings with the Hyundai i30 three-door that also took the stage at the Paris expo.

Aside from the three-door body style, the Pro_cee'd doesn't differ too much from the five-door Cee'd that bowed in Geneva earlier this year. That means buyers will be treated to a host of powertrain options, in both gasoline and diesel variants, ranging from 89 to 133 horsepower, mated to six-speed manual, automatic and even one dual-clutch transmission.

But Kia is hoping the Pro_cee'd will win over buyers who want something stylish above all. Peter Schreyer, Kia's Chief Design Officer, stated that "You know from a single glance that this is a car you want to drive, not just own." If you're of like mind, have a glance at the next page for the full details and a few quick videos.

Mitsubishi has revealed the Euro-version of the same Outlander Sport model that debuted with updates earlier this year at the New York Auto Show. No, the French do not call it the Royale Sport (with cheese), but rather the ASX.

The crossover has received a range of aesthetic and engineering tweaks, including revised interior fabrics. Designers have also abandoned the old rotary knob switch for the vehicle's all-wheel-control system in favor of a pushbutton interface, though the largest change to the recipe comes in the form of a reworked multi-link rear suspension. Powertrain options remain unchanged, however, with a total of three engine mills on deck, including a 1.6-litre gasoline engine with 115 horsepower mated to a five-speed manual transmission in two-wheel drive configuration.

Those hunting up a little more traction can step up to a 1.8-litre diesel with 147 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque paired with a six-speed manual and the buyer's choice of either a two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive system. A low-CO2 1.8 diesel is also available with 114 horsepower. You can check out the full press release for more information and the photo gallery.

Hey, remember the Rondo? The tall Kia hatchback never really caught on here in North America, but in Europe - where all sorts of funky five-doors flourish - the Rondo (sorry, Carens) has enjoyed respectable success. At least, enough that Kia has completely redesigned its people-carrier for 2013, bringing it more in line with the stylish new design direction of the brand's entire lineup.

Kia says that the Carens rides on an all-new platform that features a cab-forward design and a longer wheelbase to accommodate both five- and seven-passenger seating configurations. Powertrain details haven't been disclosed, but since this MPV is a Europe-only affair, we expect a range of both gasoline and diesel engines to be on deck, mated to both manual and automatic transmissions. Surprise, surprise.

Have a look-see at the new Carens in the high-res gallery above and click here for the official press blast.

We were more than a little bummed when Volvo proclaimed it didn't intend to bless Canadian consumers with its V40 hatchback/wagon. We're even more bummed now that there's this newly debuted R Design model at the Paris Motor Show.

Even though the most powerful engine remains the same 254-horsepower turbo five cylinder (a 115-horsepower diesel engine is also on offer), there are a number of worthwhile updates to the R Design over the standard V40. A reworked front fascia, rear diffuser, twin exhaust and five-spoke diamond-cut wheels in either 17- or 18-inch sizes add some spice to the car's already attractive shape.

If that's not enough, buyers can opt for the R Design Lux package to enjoy an embossed leather interior along with other high-end bits and pieces. There are also blue accents crowning the dash and its three switchable treatments - Elegance, Eco and Performance.

Perhaps most intriguingly, though, Volvo is offering a suspension package that's been tuned by Swedish racing driver Robert Dahlgren. The chassis sits 10mm lower than stock, with firmer springs and shocks, uprated struts, monotube dampers and thicker antiroll bars. Yep, we wish we could get our hands on one of these in Canada... And while we're wishing, how about a Polestar update, too?

In any case, feel free to check out the press release, video clip and high-res Rebel Blue image gallery above.
Continue reading 2013 Volvo V40 R-Design leaves us feeling blue in Paris

2013 Volvo V40 R-Design leaves us feeling blue in Paris originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 17:29:00 EST.
While much of the focus for Lamborghini at the Paris Motor Show was on its new strategy for the Gallardo line using styling cues to differentiate the rear-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive and Superleggeria models, the Italian automaker is continuing development of its Urus SUV, even though it has not yet gotten final approval yet.

Stephan Winkelmann, the firm's CEO and president, confirmed to Autoblog that he is confident the project will be approved by the VW Group, but has not yet received the final blessing and says much depends on the whether or not there will be a new architecture to underpin the vehicle. However, the fact that Porsche showed the Panamera Sport Turismo concept demonstrates that there is enough flexibility in that platform to perhaps support the Lamborghini concept.

Even if the go ahead is granted soon, Winkelmann doesn't expect the Urus to be ready for sale until 2017. In the meantime, the company is aggressively pursuing the new Gallardo strategy and promises to have its successor that goes beyond the current facelift ready by 2014. Next year, Lamborghini will busy itself with building the 20 Sesto Elemento carbon-fibre-intensive models as well as celebrating the company's 50th anniversary.

Filed under: Hatchback, Hyundai, Motor sports, Racing, Performance, Paris Motor Show

At virtually the same moment that it was revealed Hyundai was exiting all motorsports activities in North America, the Korean automaker was on stage at the Paris Motor Show making a major commitment to one of the most exciting - and costliest - racing series the globe has to offer, the World Rally Championship. Showing this i20 WRC racecar mockup (note the lack of an interior), Hyundai announced it is poised to return to the gravel-spitting, sideways-sliding yumpfest in short order.

Return, you say? Yes - even before its meteoric rise as an automaker, Hyundai was toiling away in the series' F2 class back back in the late 90s. The team then graduated to the premier series in 2000, campaigning an Accent hatchback until 2003, at which point it ceased motorsports activities.

Specs for the rallygoing i20 haven't been disclosed, but in order to meet regulations, this Hyundai will need to rely on a 1.6-litre engine, presumably turbocharged to around 300 horsepower. All-wheel drive and a sequential gearbox are givens as well.

Hyundai has not yet announced when the i20 WRC will compete, nor has the FIA governing body granted it official entry into the series, though one is surely coming.

After a few lean years in terms of manufacturer support, the WRC is poised for a bit of a rebirth, with new teams to be fielded from Mini with its Countryman racer and a Toyota entrant based on its Yaris subcompact.

The next-generation M3 is indeed coming, but if you simply can't wait for the hardcore M model, BMW will now sell you new M Performance add-ons for the 3 Series sedan, a whole host of which have been fitted to one of the show cars here in Paris. And don't worry - these optional extras aren't all show and no go.

BMW's show car started as a 335i M Sport sedan, but was upfitted with 20-inch light alloy wheels, an M Performance braking system, upgraded suspension and an aero package. Other bits of visual flare include a rear spoiler, carbon fibre mirror caps and blacked-out grille kidneys. And while BMW's release only details power upgrades for four-cylinder diesel models, the 335i shown here uses the catalog's engine silencer system which, contrary to its name, is said to deliver a decidedly sportier sound to both the engine and exhaust notes.

Inside, there's an M Performance steering wheel with Race Display (a small screen that displays some of the vehicle's vital stats), stainless steel pedals and Alcantara trim found throughout the cabin. And of course, there's plenty of "M Performance" badging. You know, to really drive the point home.

But these upgrades aren't just for 3 Series owners. Oh, no. BMW will offer these specific parts on other models, including the 1 Series, 5 Series and 6 Series. See the hotted-up 3er for yourself in the photo gallery above, and click here for a whole smattering of details in BMW's press release.

Customization programs are nothing new in the auto industry. For a fee, they offer a chance to work directly with the manufacturer to create a one-of-a-kind vehicle for the customer. These programs, however, are usually offered by makers of the most exotic, expensive and exclusive vehicles, like Ferrari, Rolls-Royce and Porsche. It's not often that a manufacturer of, shall we say, a more humble stature, offers this type of vehicle personalization. Nevertheless, that's exactly what Fiat is doing with its "Fuori Serie" program.

The Italian automaker's new personalization program is being offered only for Abarth models, and is represented at the Paris Motor Show by the Fiat 500 Abarth Fuori Serie, a stunning reinterpretation of the Fiat Abarth 131 Mirafiori "Olio Fiat" livery that debuted at the 1976 Monte Carlo Rally. The matte yellow-and-blue colours of the livery are the most striking aspect of the car, but walking around it reveals other details like a hood that features a NACA duct on one side and louvered vent on the other, the highly polished wheels with yellow center caps that match the painted Brembo brake calipers, and lastly, the special "Fuori Serie" and "695" badging. Along with colors and finishes, Fuori Serie vehicles also get a special 180-horsepower tune of Abarth's 1.4-litre turbo that normally leaves the factory with 160 hp.

The 500 Abarth Fuori Serie is just one example of what a customer can create using Fiat's new program, which starts by choosing one of two customization collections: Heritage or New Wave. The car you see here came from the Heritage collection, which draws its colours, materials and finishes from Fiat's motorsports exploits. The New Wave collection, meanwhile, draws inspiration from the "modern world." We're not quite sure what that means, but hopefully Fiat will show up at the next international auto show with another Fuori Serie car to explain.

Here's a showstopper. Tucked away in a corner of the Fourth Pavilion here at the 2012 Paris Motor Show was this carbon fiber hot rod from the Espera Sbarro Montbéliard School of Design. Known simply as the Eight, cribbed from the Maserati-sourced V8 engine, this machine was reportedly designed and built in just eight weeks. We also hear that it's powered by the impure thoughts of heathens, or maybe just gasoline.

The Sbarro Eight Concept was built to help showcase some of the latest technology available to automakers, including a driver-facing tablet computer that occupies the spot normally housing the dash. Applications such as navigation, internet, and Read & Go for books, Liveradio and Deezer for tunes and Cinéday for movies keep the driver connected while on the go. But hopefully not while actually, you know, driving.

The Eight also features a Parrot Asteroid Smart car radio powered by Android that features a 6.2-inch screen and can connect to the online Asteroid Market, cellular phones via Bluetooth, or display videos through auxilliary inputs. An onboard wireless charger and a mobile stereo system round out the tech package.

Though we truly love its distinctive style, this pony has the go to back up its considerable show. The aforementioned V8 engine spins out 360 horsepower to the rear wheels. We've got to hand it to the auto design students that penned the Eight - this is one concept that quite literally stopped us in our tracks. See our full photo gallery above.

Believe it or not, despite the fact that Mazda first unveiled its refreshed 2013 MX-5 Miata in July of this year, the 2012 Paris Motor Show in late September is the first time we've run across the iconic sports car in the metal. And so we wasted no time in filling our DSLRs with a full spate of images.

As you can see, while we eagerly await the still-not-that-close next-generation Miata, the current MX-5's well-known smiley visage has been toned down for 2013, and that's most definitely a good thing in our books. Besides that, Mazda claims to have "[enhanced] throttle response and brake return." Sounds like a nice addition to what is already a winning package.

We suggest combing through the upgrades in our high-res image gallery above. And if you like what you see, Mazda officials tell Autoblog that your local dealer should be getting their 2013 MX-5 stock right about... now!

Though the French automaker is clearly on the top of its game with all of its offerings for the 2012 Paris Motor Show, Peugeot's Onyx supercar concept is its definitive highlight.

A masterpiece in matte black paint, Onyx's most striking features are the two huge swathes of polished copper that adorn both sides. Each side is made from a single piece of copper and, other than extensive polishing, the material is unprotected from the elements. The goal here, says Peugeot, is that the copper panels will change and evolve over time with oxidation.

The lightweight concept car - all of the body panels are made from carbon fibre and the car weighs just 1,100 kilograms (2,425 pounds) - is propelled by an aggressive hybrid powertrain. At the heart of the propulsion is a 3.7-litre V8 that's good for a whopping 600 horsepower, and it's modulated via a six-speed sequential gearbox. The conventional engine is augmented with lithium-ion battery-powered electric system that adds another 80 horses to the mix.

The interior of the Onyx is nearly as impressive as the body and powertrain, with a single, neutral-coloured, floor-to-ceiling material that looks a lot like wall-to-wall carpeting, but in a cool French way. Seats are barely discernable from the non-seat portion of the interior, and the whole thing looks about as wild and impractical as you'd want from your typical billion-dollar steampunk concept supercar. Nicely done.
