Fans of the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S were in heaven at this year's 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon, as nearly every tuner under the sun rolled out their own heavily modified versions of the new sports coupe. It has been reported that 91 versions of the 86, (known in Canada as the Scion FR-S) were on hand for gearheads to fawn over.

The range of modification on hand was all over the map, ranging from elegant aerodynamic and styling upgrades, to full-on Greddy and Blitz decal-clad race and drift cars sporting a variety of engine upgrades with speculated power output stretching as far as 1,200 . Needless to say there was plenty of drift action going on outside the Makuhari Messe's halls to keep onlookers entertained.

Fortunately, for car geeks who are getting bored of the little Toyota, a few other interesting creations were kicking around, including an incredibly slick custom Nissan GT-R built by Veilside. Its massive gaping grille is not unlike that of the Bentley Continental, whereas the blacked out headlamps have hints of Audi, but together they turn the GT-R into something easily mistaken for the Batmobile's angry white cousin. And then there was the Nissan Silvia with a 3.8L twin turbo VR38DETT motor from a GT-R shoe-horned in there... outrageous!
Even the humble Leaf EV and hefty NV350 have received a little love from designers and engineers. The Juke Nismo will share the stage with creations like the Leaf Nismo Performance Package and the GT-R Nismo GT3. That last beast debuted in 2012 and boasts more engine output and enhanced aerodynamics while still complying with FIA GT3 regulations.

But our favourite of the bunch has to be the NV350 Caravan Rider Transporter. Custom-built for TAS, the commercial van was penned to toe the line between a hard-working commercial van and a luxurious leisure machine. We dig it.

Nissan is also showing off a number of race cars, including the Motul Autech GT-R of Super GT fame and the company's wild DeltaWing. Check out the full press release and videos below for more information, and be sure to take a look at the full gallery for a glimpse of the models in attendance.

We're piecing this together as best we can from the original Japanese with the help of Google Translate, but it seems Chevrolet is headed to the with three special vehicles. Embracing the customization of American metal through the themes of cool, fun and freedom, the showpiece will be a Camaro Giovanna Edition but there's no information on it. Based on its name, though, we would not be shocked if it's fitted with Giovanna aftermarket wheels.

It will be joined by the Chevrolet Captiva Freedom Rider in Carbon Flash Metallic hue and the Chevrolet Sonic Street Icon Package in red. The "stylish and playful" Sonic is all about skateboarders and "the street generation," while the Captiva works the two-wheeled crowd with its Thule bike rack and painted-to-match bicycle.

The Salon goes down from January 11-13. We'll be looking forward to that Camaro and to see whether that Captiva grille really is as meshtastic as it looks in the above picture.
Continue reading Chevrolet headed to Tokyo Auto Salon with Sonic, Captiva concepts

Chevrolet headed to Tokyo Auto Salon with Sonic, Captiva concepts originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 02 Jan 2013 10:13:00 EST.
The Tokyo Auto Salon will welcome a Toyota GT86 (known here as the Scion FR-S) tuned by Gazoo Racing, said to be called the GRMN Sports FR Concept Platinum. We only get the briefest of teasers right now before the show begins on January 11, so we don't have much to go on beyond a unique lower front fascia and headlight treatment, a hood with at least one scoop, and a giant wing with unique LED taillights out back.

Assuming this coupe is a further development of the GRMN Sports FR Concept from earlier in 2012, it will likewise use a twin-charged version of the 2.0-litre boxer four-cylinder and put out something like 330 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque. We'll get the rest of the skinny in about two weeks, so for now, there's a gallery of other teased angles above.

Honda has pulled back the covers on what we can expect to see at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon, including what looks to be an S2000 refresh some four years after the convertible left production?! The S2000 Modulo Climax is an "exhibition model" based on the old roadster, but features updated front and rear fascias as well as an interior trimmed out in black and burgundy. Beyond that, details are scarce as hen's teeth.

Honda will also show off a number of vehicles based on the N-One mini, including the N-One Modulo Style, Mugen Racing N-One Concept and an N-One worked up by the Japan Nailist Association. That last creation features plenty of rhinestone decoration. (We wish we were joking.) Mugen will also display a tarted-up CR-V Design Study as well as the CR-Z Mugen RZ: a 300-unit specialty vehicle.

Meanwhile, the manufacturer's motorcycle arm will show off the Goldwing F6B, previously seen at EICMA 2012 as well as the CB1300 Super Four Special Edition and the NC700X. The automaker will also pepper its stand with a few of its racing machines for the public to enjoy. Check out the full press release below.
Continue reading Honda's slate for Tokyo Auto Salon includes S2000 revival, many Mugens

Honda's slate for Tokyo Auto Salon includes S2000 revival, many Mugens originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 27 Dec 2012 11:25:00 EST.
Well, that didn't take long. The First Toyota GT-86 (a.k.a. Scion FR-S) has made its way to the dyno courtesy of the good people at HKS. How'd it do? The vehicle managed to spin the rollers at 170 rear-wheel horsepower, which dovetails with the 200 crank horsepower announced by Toyota and Subaru after calculating a 15 per cent driveline loss. Of course, whenever HKS gets involved, you can feel safe betting your lunch money that forced induction won't be far behind. True to form, HKS showed off its handiwork on a drift car version of the new sports coupe from Toyota at Tokyo Auto Salon 2012.

The GT-86 looks more than happy to dance through a few chicanes sideways, and we can't wait to see the vehicle go fender-to-fender with the best of them. Click past the jump to check out the dyno video for yourself.
Continue reading First Toyota GT-86 (Scion FR-S) coupe dyno'd

First Toyota GT-86 (Scion FR-S) coupe dyno'd originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 11:01:00 EST.
While the Tokyo Auto Salon was full of glittering tuner toys inside the show, outside the scene was kept hopping with the antics of some D1GP stars and the surprise appearance of an LFA Roadster.

While the pros put on an incredible display of talent, there was apparently an amateur hour which provided a whole different type of entertainment. The LFA's little brother, the IS-F is popular among some well heeled drifters. Just like other forms of motorsport however, a fat wallet is no indication of driving skill, as this video after the jump shows.

There was a time when a driver could hide his more embarrassing fubars from his friends, but thanks to Youtube and good quality cell phone cameras, there is no escaping from ones own ineptitude.
Continue reading How not to drift a Lexus IS-F

How not to drift a Lexus IS-F originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 16:31:00 EST.

Filed under: Aftermarket, Mazda, Performance, Tokyo Auto Salon

Ahh, the 93-95 Mazda RX-7. What fond memories I had of the car being totally fascinated by its lines and totally terrified by its performance. It was a highly-advanced featherweight that basically had the car world saying "dang, I ain't never seen one of them fancy foreign cars before."

A bit on the late side to the Japanese supercar party, the FD3S chassis was about to squash any success its predecessor the FC3S had carved out. It was well received by the automotive press but not so much by the public who couldn't justify a lowly Mazda that cost more than most sports cars. After the public had spoken, it went away but did you know the car never really went away in Japan?

Nope, the FD3S was manufactured from 1992 until... are you ready for this, August 2002! The Japanese enthusiasts have been fixated on this car and it continued to develop over the years along with several special models. As a result, the aftermarket has had a two decade old love affair with the twin-turbo 1.3L Rotary beast. The 3rd gen RX-7 has been made immortal on the: streets, tracks and mountains throughout the world and as seen at Tokyo Auto Salon 2012, it is still a big draw for the crowds there!

TAS 2012 featured some outrageous builds including the silver Super NA7 from renowned RX-7 tuner RE-Amemiya that was barely recognizable from its original form. RE-Amemiya also collaborated on the orange Porsche-like conversion with parts superstore SuperAutoBACS and tuner TODA. RE-Amemiya also rolled out several of the Super-G street cars that we can't get enough of including a 700 hp all carbon street car that was left-hand drive built for a customer overseas.

Scoot also had their extensive bodywork modifications on a silver FD which polarize the crowd on it's Corvette-inspired look. But under the hood everyone agreed that the Scoot 4-rotor engine was a marvel to behold. As for cars that prove it at the track, we saw the FEED FD involved in the Tsukuba Super Lap Battle and tucked away was the Red RE-Wing RX-7 that is cranking out 57-second lap times at Tsukuba cicuit! A fast time no doubt but what the real shocker is that it looks like a street car and still has plates.

Rumour has it that tuner RE-Amemiya isn't bringing an FD to TAS 2013, so this might mark the beginning of the end for the long fascination with the RX-7 in Japan.
Mazda RX-7 3rd-gen still draws attention in Japan after nearly 20 years. originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 16:00:00 EST.
For those new schoolers out there, import performance is not something that started in the early 1990's. It didn't start with the Civic EG hatchback and it most certainly wasn't based front wheel drive platforms. As we see every year at Tokyo Auto Salon there are many fine examples of Japanese sports cars from yesteryear and the Toyota 2000GT is right up there with the best of 'em.

The Toyota 2000GT is a legendary sportscar over in Japan but never received much notoriety here since it was never made it to Canada (like the Nissan Skyline). So don't be afraid to admit you have never seen one of these, or perhaps know little about it. Well, here are the 'Coles notes' on this FR coupe that has fetched as much as US$375,000 at auction and even made it into the James Bond flick, You Only Live Twice.

The car was only built between 1967-1970 and over that period only 351 cars were produced, of which 62 left-hand drive models made it to the U.S. market. The 2000GT was powered by a high-revving 2.0-litre inline-6 that produced 150 ponies at a time when domestics were pushing over 400 off the dealer floor. However, this was a lightweight (just over 1000 kg) low-slung and ultra slippery fastback that sliced through the air on its way to a 135 mph terminal velocity.

It is believed there are only 40 left in North America but judging from our finds at the Tokyo Auto Salon this year, you'd think they were still rolling off the line. We stumbled upon five of them in all kinds of trim, full race set-ups, street cars and even a mega rare roadster. But the most curious of them all was the Toyota Crazy Car conversion to an electric vehicle. Oh, the humanity.

There are hundreds of aftermarket tuners out there, but few hold the type of street cred that VeilSide does. Long known for making Japan's greatest sportscars even greater, VeilSide has now turned its attention to the Mercedes-Benz SL.

Not the newest one, mind you, because it's not out yet. Instead, VeilSide has taken to the Tokyo Auto Salon to unveil a conversion kit that turns the outgoing SL into something closer to the top-of-the-line SL65 AMG Black Series.

To do so, VeilSide fitted the SL with a custom body kit that includes new bumpers front and rear, new hood, fenders, side skirts, and spoiler, all crafted from carbon fibre. The result is called the Black Fortune.

The folding roof mechanism present on the stock SL - but removed on the Black Series model - appears to remain in place, so the VeilSide won't encompass the kind of weight savings embodied by the factory special, but with only 300 examples of the kit to be offered at about $30,000 a pop, seeing one on the street should be about as rare a proposition.
VeilSide bets on Black with Mercedes SL body kit originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 08:01:00 EST.

Filed under: Aftermarket, Tokyo Auto Salon

The Tokyo Motor Show often trumps North American debuts for Japanese cars but if you want to see how you can modify a car, you don't have to look much further than Tokyo Auto Salon. The annual tuning mecca for car nuts all over the world is like SEMA but with cars, parts and styling that is unique and often trend-setting for the rest of the world.

So every year, we want to uncover what the Japanese have done with these cars well in advance of the cars we will see on our shores months later. For 2012, it was all about the low-buck basic FR platform, the Toyota GT86 (Scion FR-S) and Subaru BRZ that tuners latched on to. Although they were there in numbers, the D1GP drift car by HKS call the Racing Performer 86 is a competition-ready version of the car had us drooling to see it get sideways. Driver Nob Tanaguchi will have his work cut out for him in this new platform but the skill behind the wheel and under the lift should elevate the effort for 2012.

Subaru came out with an STi version of the BRZ in the booth that had crowds buzzing. Finished in Championship Blue, the BRZ STi featured a lip kit, carbon fiber hood, STi brakes and flush 18-inch wheels but sadly no intercooler was visible through the grille. There was also the widebody, race-ready GT300 version of the BRZ ready to tackle the Japan touring car circuit in Super GT. It has been a while since the Cusco Impreza popped up and the BRZ definitely looks the part. Toyota, not to be out-done offered up a TRD version of the GT86 complete with lip kit, fatter 18-inch wheels, TRD exhaust and big brake kit.

Beyond that the vehicle popped up aisle-after-aisle and judging by GReddy Scion FR-S build-up seen at Detroit is going to make an equally big splash here.

If you have ever gone over 250km/h things start to get really hectic. Your pulse races, breathing slows and your gut begins to realize that any slight twitch is probably going to be your last. At least that is what us mere mortals feel but the team at GReddy / Trust in Japan did a little shakedown of their modified Nissan GT-R (the 35RX) at the hands of a pro driver Eiji "Tarzan" Yamada who found it to be just another day at the office.

What we have here is an already potent Nissan supercar that is bored, stroked and tweaked to insane levels of nearly 1250hp! The 3.8L displacement on the VR38DETT has been stroked to 4.3L and the modest stock turbos have been supplanted with twin TD06-20G turbos. The motor now breathes through a GReddy intake manifold and exhales through a GReddy stainless exhaust. The front mount intercooler, oil cooler and oil pan have all been modified to complete the task of keeping temps down as well. The car was on display at the GReddy booth at the Tokyo Auto Salon to showcase their R35 goodies.

In order to keep the car grounded at speeds for which it was not intended, a BenSopra widebody and aero kit was installed. The end result is 333 km/h (208 mph) documented at Fuji Speedway and some bragging rights for the aftermarket magicians at GReddy who caught it all on video.
Continue reading GReddy Trust 35RX Nissan GT-R blasts 333 km/h top speed at Fuji Speedway

GReddy Trust 35RX Nissan GT-R blasts 333 km/h top speed at Fuji Speedway originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 17 Jan 2012 13:58:00 EST.

Filed under: Japan, Tokyo Auto Salon

Having been to Japan to experience the massive Tokyo Auto Salon spectacle many years in the past, we can say there truly isn't anything like it in the world. The equivalent of Japanese SEMA can be inspirational, puzzling and downright frightening at times but the show is so large that there is something for gearheads of every type. The 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon brought out many perennial favorites and as always many new faces, the likes of the Toyota FT86 (Scion FR-S) and Subaru BRZ not withstanding.

And just like SEMA many of the major OEMs are there to display their aftermarket wares along side the hardcore Japanese tuners. Aftermarket legends like HKS, GReddy, A'PEXi, Blitz, VeilSide, JUN and Tomei have come and gone over the years in the midst of a downturn in the economy and a reluctance to tune cars. So in their place, OEMs like Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Mazda continue to take up larger portions of real estate and the amount of cheap Asian mainland parts slingers continues to multiply. Regardless, TAS is the place to see all kinds of the bleeding-edge tuned cars from modified Hybrids to outrageous Hypercars!

Nissan's Nismo and Autech showed off special editions of the Juke, the Leaf and the Fairlady Z.
Nissan tuner Autech has shifted gears and tunes a lot of everyday commuter boxes, so Nissan trumped them with 2013 Nissan GT-R with the J-spec Track Pack.

Every year we try and find the httest platforms that tuners will latch onto and as expected it was the Toyota GT86 (Scion FR-S) and Subaru BRZ that tuners went nuts for. We saw all kinds of flavours of these affordable FR coupes including D1GP-ready the HKS Racing Performer 86! But we also saw Subaru come out swinging with the GT300 version of the Super GT BRZ race car and an STi version of the BRZ in the booth but no intercooler was spotted in the process.

From there, the show just gets crazy with so many 1990's sports cars being modified such as Nissan Silvias (240SX) and Skylines and the always-popular Mazda RX-7. There are also high-end supercars being pumped out for the show modified in ways you just won't see here, so head on over to the gallery to take it all in.

Ever since the launch of Lexus' super hot LFA Coupe, gearheads have been wondering if or when the manufacturer would chop the top and create an open air version. Then, at Detroit in 2008, a drop top version appeared on the show floor. What didn't appear was any sort of details or any further news.

The guys over at CarScoop got their hands on a video that shows a white on red LFA convertible taking part in the D1GP Kick Off that began today outside the Tokyo Auto Salon.

We have no more details then that at this time, other than to say that this is very much a driver as you will see in the video after the jump. It also includes some pretty hot competitive drift action too!!!
Continue reading Lexus LFA roadster spotted at D1GP drift event

Lexus LFA roadster spotted at D1GP drift event originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 16:29:00 EST.
Saying the Toyota 2000GT holds a special place in our hearts is akin to calling oxygen and water kind of important to our survival. The long-nose two-door was envisioned as a suitable competitor to the likes of the European sports cars rolling out Italy and the UK at the time, and in many ways, the Toyota was far superior. Built at a time when Japan Inc. wasn't exactly known for beautiful automobile designs, the 2000GT may have been influenced by European cars of its day, but it has stood the test of time as one of the country's all-time design greats. The low-volume coupe is a piece of automotive legend, which is exactly why choosing to use a 2000GT as a platform for an electric conversion strikes us equal parts blasphemous and awesome. But that's exactly what Japan's Crazy Car Project has done.

The engineers behind the exercise ditched the standard 2.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine in favor of a 161-horsepower electric motor. A 35kWh lithium-ion battery provides the system with power, and the hood has been covered with photovoltaic cells to help keep the car going. Likewise, the back glass is covered in a transparent solar panel. All told, the system can propel the vehicle to around 200 km/H.

Inside, the 2000GT SEV features a modernized interior with plenty of tech-laden gadgets. The vehicle was built in cooperation with Toyota and debuted at the 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon. Let's hope they started with a real basket case, eh? Hit the jump to see a video of the car in action.
Continue reading Classic Toyota 2000GT turned into solar-powered EV

Classic Toyota 2000GT turned into solar-powered EV originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 14:02:00 EST.
While the Tokyo Motor Show is a stage for the world's manufacturers to strut their production models, the Tokyo Auto Salon allows designers and engineers to stretch their legs with custom hardware. This year, Mazda is bringing 10 special models to the Tokyo Auto Salon, including a custom version of the recently-released CX-5.

The custom CX-5 wears special paint, a lowered ride height and unique wheels for a significantly sportier appearance. Likewise, the company's Demio also receives a little attention, and visitors to the show can expect to see the Demio 13 Skyactiv Smart Stylish bow alongside the CX-5. The pint-sized hatch makes use of a few aero treatments including a front underspoiler, side skirts and rear underskirt.

The new Axela Skyactiv will also be on display, complete with a body kit of its own, along with a sharp-looking set of wheels. Visitors can take a closer look at a pair of custom Roadster models as well, including the Black Tuned version and a racing-spec version called the Jimba-Ittai, or Rider and Horse as one. We like the sound of that. Hit the jump to read the full press release.
Continue reading Mazda previews driver-focused Tokyo Auto Salon showcars

Mazda previews driver-focused Tokyo Auto Salon showcars originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 21 Dec 2011 14:28:00 EST.
If you wanted to create a Porsche Panamera drop-top, where would you start? Perhaps with a Panamera sedan or something else from the Porsche stable? Or at least something that hails from Germany?

A customizer at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Salon decided his ideal Teutonic convertible would begin life as a Nissan 370Z Roadster. It takes more than a body-kit and upgraded lighting to go from Japan to Germany, but we'll give the owner of this car an A for effort. Execution? Well... not so much.

Also, we're just going to remain patient and wait quietly for the real thing to arrive from Zuffenhausen. Oh, wait...

You've seen the Toyota GRMN iQ Racing Concept (lucky you!), and now it's time to divert your attention towards the rest of the Japanese automaker's wares being shown off at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

First up is the Toyota Prius G Sports Concept, which features the kind of gaping maw only the Mama Cylon could love. Rounding out Toyota's offerings is the TRD Auris GT Concept, which we think actually looks kinda nifty with its subdued body kit and blindingly bright yellow paint.

Lexus wasn't left out of the proceedings either, and its machines are arguably more interesting than its mothership's. There's the F-Sport CT 200h taking center stage with its unique alloy wheels, body kit and Recaro seats, which is joined by the IS F Club Circuit Sports Racer and a set of Club Performance Accessories for the IS F that include front and rear spoilers and a carbon fiber hood.

Last but certainly not least is the Gazoo Racing Lexus LFA supercar that raced at last year's Nürburgring 24 Hours race. See both sets of vehicular craziness in our high-res image galleries below, then check out all the details in the press releases after the break.

The 2011 Tokyo Auto Salon gets underway January 14th, and Honda a is bringing an aggressively-styled CR-Z to the party. Dubbed the Tesutosutadimoderu TS-1X, the two-seater was a standard Honda CR-Z before a set of sporty wheels, body-kit and flat-black paint scheme upped the car's threat level from wallflower to ready-for-war.

We're not going to call this body kit ugly before seeing at least a few more shots of it installed, but if we found out there's a K20 under the hood, we wouldn't be surprised to see it push straight into attack mode and sprout a sweeping red lamp up front. In any case, this won't be the last bit of craziness seen from Tokyo... stay tuned.
