Gatebil Festival in Norway is Scandinavia's largest car festival series and has quickly become a premiere event in the tuning car world. Amazing drift competitions, a road race series, live concerts, babes, extreme cars and auto related entertainment are the perfect ingredients for what we like to call a good time. At the recent season opener of Gatebil at Valer, Formula Drift star, Fredric Aasbo showed up to impress in his Speedhunters 2JZ-GTE powered Toyota GT86 (Scion FR-S).

As a pro drifter who competes in Formula Drift, Fredric is no stranger to door to door tandem drifting amongst his fellow competitors. In fact, it's expected and encouraged in competition. He can often be found running inches away from his fellow drivers while sliding sideways at 100+ km/h at wide open throttle; the closer the better.

Trackday traffic? Freddy ain't got time for that! Watch as he weaves in and out of the slower moving traffic with impunity and must have scared the bejeezus out of a few guys. At one point, he gets stuck behind a car and just mats the gas across a closed off section to get up ahead.

Check out this well put together multi-angle video clip of Freddy ripping up the track through the traffic at Valer amongst amateurs and lower level pro's. We won't spoil the video for you but there are definitely some sections where it looks like he's about to plow into the side of some of the other cars on track.

We'd venture to guess that in recent years, there have probably been almost as many rumours swirling about a Toyota Supra successor than there have been for a mid-engine Corvette. (Case in point: the speculative renderings we came across a few years ago, pictured above.) While we don't expect the Corvette's recipe to change drastically any time soon, it looks like a Supra - or more appropriately a Supra-like car - could be closer than we think.

First, there was an announcement of a BMW-Toyota joint venture. Said venture would, among other things, "Set up a feasibility study to define a joint platform concept for a mid-size sports vehicle."

Upping chances even further, a new Automotive News report claims that incoming Toyota chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada wants a vehicle "comparable" to the Supra. Clearly there are a lot of parties that want a new Supra to happen - to say nothing of enthusiasts - but Uchiyamada might be just the guy to get it done. None of this is proof positive of an impending Supra, to be sure, but winds do seem favourable.
Continue reading Incoming Toyota chairman wants a Supra successor

Incoming Toyota chairman wants a Supra successor originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Sat, 15 Jun 2013 20:00:00 EST.
Toyota plans to follow up last year's kid-friendly Camatte concept with two new versions: the Camatte57s and Camatte57s Sport (right). Like the original Camatte, the two new concepts will make their debut at the International Tokyo Toy Show, which is happening this weekend.

Not much has changed with these two new Camatte models. Like their predecessor, they both feature detachable body panels (the count is up to 57), a 1+2 seating array and reconfigurable pedals that allow children to operate the gas and brakes while Mom or Dad steers. What is new is an open-top roadster design that even eschews doors in favour of easier ingress/egress. They look like something a tourist would rent to get around a Hawaiian island, though we dig the distinct personalities of each model's design.

Both cars are all-electric, though Toyota hasn't provided any other specifications, like what makes the Sport model sporty besides its more aggressive body panels and silver, black and red color scheme. That's just as well, as neither concept, like the original Camatte before them, is street legal.

And in case you're wondering from where Toyota conjured these concepts' odd name, "Camatte" is the Japanese for word for "care." According to the automaker, it's intended to signify both caring for others and caring for cars, while the lone 's' at the end of each name stands for "touch," and the number corresponds to the number of body panels.

If you've ever looked at a car with nearly 1,000 horsepower and wondered why anyone needs that amount of thrust, you may want to take a look at the video below. In it, one gentleman details his descent into Toyota Supra madness, starting with a pristine factory example and stumbling down the rabbit hole of modification. What makes this particular clip interesting is just how honest the owner is as he explains the evolution of his car. He doesn't just prattle off a list of parts like he's reading the menu at Golden Griddle.

Instead, he painstakingly pulls us through the car's growth, detailing each iteration and what pushed him to the next stage of the build every time. From this point of view, it looks less like someone walked into a shop and lit a massive stack of $100 bills on fire and more like a quasi-logical progression of events. Or at least it does to me. You can check out the build in the video below, complete with plenty of Fast and the Furious references and racing.
After tonness of teasing, Toyota finally unveiled the all-new 2014 Corolla in the wee hours of the - at least to those of us here on the Eastern seaboard. The fresh new face of the NA-spec car takes a number of cues from the Camry and Avalon sedans, and in S trim with the large alloy wheels and blacked-out front fascia, we'd even venture this is the most boldly styled North American Corolla to date (since the venerable RWD AE86 variant, faint praise as that may be).

Of course, our friends in other markets will also be getting fully updated versions of the Corolla as well, and here, we're getting our first glimpse at the European-spec car, complete with a very different front fascia that, at least in this trim, seems to take a more conservative design approach. A quick poll of the Autoblog staff shows that we're torn as to whether or not we prefer this European look to our North American-specific car, but at least in the sporty-ish S trim, we think the North Americans may have got the better end of the deal.

The Euro-spec Corolla actually shares a lot of its design with its larger platform-mate, the Auris, a car that we don't - and likely won't - get in North America. Inside, the European Corolla looks basically the same as the NA car, and while market-specific engines and specifications haven't been released yet, it's expected that the Corolla will share much of its dirty bits with the European Auris, as well.

Have a look through the Euro-spec gallery above, as well as the NA-spec gallery below, and then let us know which Corolla you think looks better in our poll and in Comments.

After releasing official pictures and a press release about an hour earlier, Toyota chose an aircraft hanger at the Santa Monica airport as the venue for the global introduction of its highly anticipated 2014 Corolla. Following an extended aerial acrobat show, which included performers running along the walls, swimmers romping in a massive overhead clear plastic pool and angry dancers destroying their cardboard stage in a glittery fit... the all-new C-segment star of the show was lowered on cables from the ceiling. (After the strobe lights and pounding sound that preceded it, the final vehicle reveal was almost anticlimactic.)

Face-to-face with the eleventh-generation sedan, we liked what we saw. Compared to last year's Corolla, the new model appears smaller in person - yet that is mostly an optical illusion. By the tape, it is 102 mm (four inches) longer and slightly wider than its predecessor, but a bit shorter. The wheelbase has been stretched nearly 102 mm (four inches), yet the front and rear overhangs only give or take about an inch in the conversion. With the exception of the enormous wheel/fender gap (the new Corolla seems to ride too high), its overall proportions are very pleasing.

The fresh styling is modern and stylish, with sculpted lines that add character to a formerly bland sedan

The fresh styling is modern and stylish, with sculpted lines that add character to a formerly bland sedan (inexpensive does not have to mean boring). Thankfully, the new car lacks any tacked-on lower cladding to detract from its shape, and the sleek new LED headlights have allowed the designers to abandon the bulbous look of its predecessor's front illumination. The rear bumper appears to have been shaped in the wind tunnel, with much sharper corners than the outgoing sedan and the tail lamps are now cleanly integrated into the quarter panels and trunk lid.

Inside the cabin, the Corolla has definitely matured and gained a premium feel - especially in the higher trim levels. We welcome the increased seat travel, Lexus styling cues and new technology, but we'd still like to see more compartment space in the center console area for phones and other electronic devices, and fewer buttons.

After our brief introduction, we can't help but feel that the all-new 2014 Toyota Corolla is a worthy successor - albeit visually. Yet based on its published mechanical specifications (we've reprinted the full press release below), we can't wait to get behind the wheel to determine if it drives as well as it appears.

Depending on who you ask, the best-selling car in the world is either the Ford Focus or Toyota Corolla. Not surprisingly, Toyota claims it's the Corolla. Either way, we're talking around a million individual units per year, and over 40 million over the car's lifetime on the market, so the redesign of Toyota's compact sedan is big-time news for the Japanese automaker that it needs to get right.

The Toyota Corolla was last redesigned way back in 2008, meaning the 2014 model is a long-overdue update to the C-segment sedan. Its age shows when compared to newer rivals like the Honda Civic, Chevy Cruze, Hyundai Elantra and the aforementioned Ford Focus when comparing technology features, fuel mileage and interior roominess. In an effort to solve those demerits, Toyota has added nearly four inches to the 2014 Corolla's wheelbase and will offer a new continuously variable transmission with seven simulated gear ratios.

Engine choices consist of two available 1.8-litre four-cylinder units, one with 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque, and another more efficient version that uses Toyota's new Valvematic technology to offer 140 horses and 126 lb-ft of torque. Eco and Sport modes will be selectable by the driver.

Fuel mileage jumps to an estimated highway rating of "over 5.9 L/100 km (40 miles per gallon)," says Toyota, when properly equipped. We take that to mean the CVT, as the base L model is still saddled with an old-as-dirt four-speed automatic. At least a six-speed manual gearbox is optionally available on certain models. Efficiency is surely aided by a low curb weight of under 1,315 kilograms (2,900 pounds), made possible through the use of high-strength chassis stampings.

Official pricing information and final fuel economy figures are not yet available, but you're welcome to peruse the complete press release down below for all the details Toyota has so far decided to share.

Filed under: Coupe, Toyota, Videos, Humour

Alright, so maybe "most elegant" is a bit of a stretch, but we feel safe in calling the 1992 Toyota Paseo in the video below an "automobile." High praise, we know. Still, it's clear someone loves the awkward little coupe enough to produce a hilarious video to sell the thing. Henry Floyd worked up a quick parody of the over-the-top luxury car ads we all know and loathe, and while the finished product is a little skimpy on details like price or location, it certainly doesn't skimp on the exposition.

Hell, if we didn't already have a parade of horrible ideas floating around our collective driveways, we might even be convinced to give this little heap a new home. You can check out the ad for yourself in the clip below, just don't be surprised if you find yourself with a burning desire to own a Paseo.

Strong car sales have continued in Canada for a second consecutive month, giving these auto manufacturers more than just hopes and dreams of bigger sales than originally forecast for 2013 and a decent shot at some record setting sales. "It was a big, big, big month," consultant Dennis DesRosiers said. "We're upping our forecast for the year."

DesRosiers Automotive Consultants indicates overall Canadian car sales were up 5.3 per cent for the month of May and 8.9 per cent in April compared to last years figures. Canadian car sales fell just shy of matching the all-time high of 185,471 reached back in May 2007 and are now on pace to reach 1.76 million units in Canada for the year.

Here's what we know about the redesigned 2014 Toyota Corolla: It will have "aggressive new styling" with "available seventeen-inch alloy wheels" an "available touch screen audio" system and "available LED headlights."

We know all of this because Toyota has seen fit to release a small assortment of teaser images of the 2014 Corolla, with those descriptions attached. The latest to hit the web shows LED lighting clusters, which, to Toyota's credit, don't appear to merely mimic designs already seen in the automotive world.

We should point out that the headlights do share a link to the units seen on the Furia Concept that was supposed to foreshadow the next Corolla, though the most interesting bits - namely the honeycomb inner pattern - have been chucked while the somewhat trapezoidal main units remain intact.

Check out all four 2014 Toyota Corolla teasers in our image gallery above, and stay tuned for the live reveal on Thursday.
Continue reading 2014 Toyota Corolla coming Thursday, now with LED headlamps

2014 Toyota Corolla coming Thursday, now with LED headlamps originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 04 Jun 2013 10:30:00 EST.

Filed under: Toyota, Marketing/Advertising, Truck, Etc

The idea of lifting a full-size pickup truck completely off the ground by hand might seem as likely as, say, said pickup truck towing a 68,000 kilogram space shuttle, but... hurray, physics! The same Toyota Tundra that towed the Space Shuttle Endeavour to its final resting place at the California Science Centre is now on permanent display there as an exhibit that shows how a lever works.

Like all levers, this exhibit uses a fulcrum allowing people other than Superman to lift the 2,552 kilogram (5,625-pound) pickup (plus an extra 454 kg (1,000 pounds) for the rig). That's almost as impressive as the Tundra pulling 17 times its rated towing capacity back in October. Regardless, Toyota is once again cashing in on the publicity stunt and visitors to the science center get a live demonstration of a simple machine - we call that a win-win.
Continue reading Shuttle-hauling Tundra finds permanent home in science exhibit

Shuttle-hauling Tundra finds permanent home in science exhibit originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 04 Jun 2013 09:00:00 EST.
Ever had one of those days at work where things aren't going right and you know you'll be dragged into a boardroom at some point? Well, what you are about to see if definitely one of those instances that despite appearing beyond control, the boss is definitely going to have a word with the Captain of this Russian cargo ship. Laden with auction cars strapped down to the deck, the ship traveling from Toyama, Japan to the port in Vladivostok, Russia, this cargo ship hit the perfect storm and nearly became a wreck at the bottom of the sea.

From the crew's perspective aboard the Astongate, the ship's cargo has been tossed around like toys in fierce waves and bitterly cold high winds. What you are seeing here is the aftermath of several cars breaking their moorings and being tossed overboard or barely hanging on. Roughly half the cars remain on the deck in various degrees of mobility as the ship lists side to side.

This crop of JDM vehicles headed to Russia is mostly scrap now including a some Toyotas, Suzukis and one relatively sweet looking bug-eye Subaru WRX STi. Check out the video to see how the mighty ocean has its way with man's meek creations.
Continue reading Japanese cars tossed around like toys aboard Russian ship hit by storm

Japanese cars tossed around like toys aboard Russian ship hit by storm originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 29 May 2013 12:45:00 EST.
Stunting in the Middle East with all kinds of everyday sedans is a very common occurrence. From wild slides, to 360s, to well, whatever this is. Not long after the M.I.A. video "Bad Girls" made waves last year, the mainstream media seems to be eating this up and for the most part - we were almost over it. But just when you thought it was going the way of the Harlem Shake, a rogue group of Arab stunters called the Impossible Group in a Toyota Camry decide to up their game with some 'sidewalk skiing'... and change wheels while the car is riding on two wheels!

We've seen all kinds of compilations from the spectacular to the macabre where bystanders pay the ultimate price, but we have to admit, this video is intense. If you have't clicked past the jump to check out the video already, you're about to see a Camry hit a ramp, ride on two wheels and then see the occupants climb out remove, then re-attach the wheels which are missing.

The leader of the group, Captain Impossible claims there "isn't much danger in doing this." and describes the feat as "quite safe" taking into consideration all their preparations and support.

Judging by the destruction the Oklahoma City area experienced earlier this week, residents are going to need a lot of help in coming months. Fortunately, a number of automakers - including General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Volkswagen, Honda and Toyota - have stepped up to donate money, supplies and vehicles to aid in the recovery and rebuilding processes.

Scroll down for a quick rundown of which automakers have pitched in and what each contributed so far. Then be sure to watch video footage of the powerful tornado that caused so much damage and destruction.
Employing complex scientific formulas and methodologies probably best described as "Whatever we felt like choosing," Automobile has named its All-Stars for the 2013 model year. The 11 vehicles earned their trophies for being "the best and most significant" offerings to the mag's staff and contributors, and while we were surprised to see a couple of them on the list, none of them were very shocking.

An annual market study of the strongest brands across various industries has seen Toyota leapfrog BMW as the world's most valuable automotive brand. Toyota's 2013 brand value rose to US$24.5 billion, up 12 per cent versus 2012 numbers according to market research company Millward Brown's BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands list. BMW's value fell slightly; down by 2 per cent to a total of US$24 billion.

Mercedes-Benz finished in third place in the automotive category, up 11 per cent from 2012 for a valuation of US$18 billion. Honda (US$12.4 billion, down 2 per cent) and Nissan (US$10.2 billion, up 3 per cent) rounded out the top five for the category. Volkswagen was the only other auto brand that finished in the top 100 overall, in 100th place. Audi made the greatest percentage gain over 2012, up 18 per cent to US$5.5 billion, but finished outside of the top 100.

Technology companies dominated the overall list, with Apple, Google and IBM ranking one through three. Couture brand Prada was 2013's biggest gainer, rising by 63 per cent over 2012.

DaSilva Racing has always been synonymous with fast Ford's especially when it comes to Mustangs in particular. Joe DaSilva was the former 2009 crown holder in the venerable, yet, now extinct NMRA Pro 5.0 series and is considered the authority in Mustang performance, building and tuning.

So with great delight, we were asked to attend their recent track day event at Toronto Motosports Park (TMP) in Cayuga, Ontario. For those who don't know, Cayuga is about 1.5 hours outside of downtown Toronto and is an automotive playground for motorsports enthusiasts all over Ontario. Boasting a technical, yet flowing road course and a world class drag strip all in one convenient package.

Primarily a domestic dominated day, we saw a sprinkling of other vehicles including cars from BMW, Subaru, Toyota, Mazda, Volkswagen, two 10 second street legal Nissan GTR's and a lone Chevrolet Corvette to offer up some competition for the legendary Ford Mustang. Many of the attendees are active members of the GTA Mustang Club and along with a chance to rip their cars on track, it was also a day of shared camaraderie, networking and enthusiasts sharing their passion and having the chance to meet and greet each other.

To date, the best idea we have of what the 2014 Toyota Corolla will look like is the shape and styling of the Furia Concept from this year's Detroit Auto Show. Obviously the compact car will turn down the wick a fair bit from that orange machine, and now we have one more scintilla of an idea of what the final product will look like.

Published today on Toyota's official Facebook page, the image above clearly shows the rear quarter of the 2014 Corolla S. Though the low angle is pretty wonky, we can make out that the shape of the taillight cluster is very similar to that of the Furia, albeit without the same LED treatment, A hint of a trunk-lid spoiler is also in evidence, and also follows the Furia's lead.

Toyota points out that the new Corolla will be shown in earnest on June 6. Expect to see the full version of the car by that date at the latest - online leaks have a tendancy to speed these things up.

No, a Ford Expedition did not drive from Russia to Canada via the North Pole, but that's exactly what a team of intrepid explorers accomplished recently. Using specially-modified buses with massive tires, the group slowly drove 4,000 kilometres (2,485 miles) in 70 days over drifting ice, occasionally using a pickaxe to clear a path and staying on guard for chasms that could open up and plunge the team into the frigid arctic waters. Average speeds were about 10 km/h (6 mph), "at the speed of a (farm) tractor." While the big tires technically allowed the buses to float if the need arose, the team preferred to stay out of the water to keep the suspension from getting coated in thick, hard ice. Falling in on foot would mean almost certain death.

According to Phys.org, the buses were powered by Toyota diesel engines, but were built with prototype parts from a previous driving expedition to the North Pole. Right now, the machines are parked in a garage in Canada's Resolute Bay while the the team rests up with family back home. They plan to continue their trek to back across the Bering Straight to Russia. If successful, the team may eventually offer a version of their buses for commercial sale, any buyers?

Earlier this year, BMW and Toyota confirmed a four-part joint venture mostly focusing on increasing improving vehicle efficiency using fuel cells, lightweight materials and better battery technology. Also tucked into the announcement was a "feasibility study" for a shared platform to underpin a future midsize "sports vehicle."

In terms of the latter, it seems that things have stepped up from the feasibility stage to the conceptual stage, as Motor Trend reports we could see a pair of new sports car concepts debut later this year in at the Tokyo Motor Show. There isn't much information about the new program, but the article suggests the sports cars could be all-wheel drive hybrids, with electric motors powering the front wheels and a gas engine powering the rear wheels. While a partnership between Toyota and BMW might not lend itself to a catchy portmanteau like "Toyobaru," here's to hoping it will bear fruit that is as exciting as the ones produced by the Toyota/Subaru tie up.
