The military's High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), or Humvee to most of us, is a rugged four-wheel drive vehicle designed and manufactured by AM General. In basic trim, the truck weighs about 3,400 kg (7,500 pounds). For a beast of this stature, that number isn't overly alarming... until you realize that its stock 6.5-litre turbodiesel, running power through a three-speed automatic and portal geared hubs, only sends about 113 horsepower and 219 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. Acceleration is leisurely, but at least the truck can get out of its own way.

Understandably, the situation becomes much more dangerous, potentially deadly, when the Humvee is fully armored for duty in combat zones - ironic, right? Tipping the scales at 6,530 kg (14,400 pounds), the stock engine is only able to accelerate the truck to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 43 seconds. Equally as jaw-dropping is the lousy stock braking system, as it takes a full 307 feet to bring the truck to a rest from 60 mph (96 km/h).

To help military troops make quicker entries and exits, Gale Banks Engineering has crafted the Sidewinder Turbo system with exhaust brake as an upgrade to the stock powerplant. When fitted, engine output jumps by about 50 per cent. According to the dyno, 178 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque make it to the wheels. Acceleration to the benchmark 60 mph (96 km/h) drops to 23.1 seconds, while braking falls to 243 feet. While those numbers still won't scare even the slowest passenger vehicle on your local highway, the improvement is dramatic - especially when under fire from an AK-47.

To demonstrate its wares, Banks recently invited us to drive both the stock and modified Humvees back-to-back at its headquarters in Southern California. (Note: The Humvee we drove was configured with some unique armor plating and a 50 caliber turret - we've been asked to hide both in our pictures.)

There are no shiftier sands than those that underlie the heavy duty truck market. Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have been locked in the same interminable sniping match for years, each delighting in picking their competitors off with new, more powerful drivelines and ever loftier tow ratings. Right now, Ram sits at the top of the heap with its 2013 3500 HD. With the optional Max Tow package, the truck is rated to pull an astonishing 13,607 kg (30,000 pounds). That's ludicrous weight - the kind of heft typically left to the semi world.

In fact, most states require you to have a commercial driver's licence just to pull that much ballast around behind you, and for good reason: All that weight comes to bear on every aspect of a vehicle's driving dynamics. Every maneuver takes longer, requires more forethought and exacts a larger toll on the vehicle's hardware. Of course, as is often the case, there can be a gulf between what it says on a machine's label and what the rig can actually muster in terms of performance. We hitched a full 13,607 kg (30,000 lbs) behind the 2013 Ram 3500 HD to find out exactly how well the truck lives up to its reputation.
Continue reading 2013 Ram 3500 HD

2013 Ram 3500 HD originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 22 May 2013 12:00:00 EST.
The Silver Lake sand dunes see their fair share of well-built trophy trucks executing impressive jumps. Drivers build insane pieces of machinery for the express purpose of sailing through the air like mad men and women.

Mike Higgins is no stranger to the area. His heavily modified Ford trophy truck has gone flying through the sky on more than one occasion, but he recently bit off more than he could chew. After hitting a particularly lofty dune, Higgins went airborne for a ridiculous 55 metres (180 feet) before becoming intimately familiar with the finer points of gravity.

While Higgins nailed the jump, his landing fell short of wowing the judges. The impact very nearly broke his truck in two. Despite the mechanical mayhem, the driver walked away without a scratch, proving that occasionally miracles really do happen. You can check out the jump and the subsequent destruction below for yourself. Be warned: there's a fair bit of foul language.

Start with a Ford F-150 SVT Raptor as your base vehicle for modification, and chances are high that you'll end up with something pretty cool. Now, have those modifications done by professional lunatics Hennessey Performance, make the project turning the pickup into an ultra-long SUV, and the result stands a real chance of being a total kick in the ass. Let us present the Hennessey VelociRaptor then, in all of its awesomeness.

Hennessey has taken care in grafting a "Expedition style" rear cabin onto the Raptor, complete with an optional third row. The pictures we have show a cabin that's up to the fit and finish standards of the original Ford truck, too. The cab added over the bed also makes room for a massive load space out back, accessible via split out-folding doors and long enough for a person to lay down in (see video).

Mechanically, the truck-turned-SUV sticks with Ford's stock 6.2-litre V8, rated at 411 horsepower, or can be had with a supercharger and some 600 hp. Hennessey says the stock-motor VelociRaptor will run from 0-60 miles per hour (0-96 km/h) in 7.5 seconds, while the hi-po version takes just 5.9 seconds. The SUV does take some of the off-road ability away from the Raptor, with the company saying it hasn't yet had the opportunity to test its capabilities. On-roading and "moderate off-road duties" are the current prescription.

Hennessey will build just 30 copies of the VelociRaptor per year, offered at a starting price of US$149,500 to our neighbours to the south.
According to a report on the Chrysler Communications Facebook page and one fairly grainy image of the production line, at around 11:00AM Eastern this morning, the one-millionth Jeep Wrangler JK will roll out of the company's Toledo assembly plant.

The third-generation or "JK" Jeep Wrangler has been around since the 2007 model year, and has obviously been more popular than ever. With a greater than ever number of trim levels, two-door and four-door Unlimited models and hardy off-roading Rubicon packages, the JK offers more to choose from than ever for those looking for something in a traditional Jeep. In fact, with the modern 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 powering it, the 2012 model year saw record sales.

With a model refresh due out for the Wrangler in 2015 (along with the likely addition of a diesel engine option), we expect that sales will continue to roll right along, too.

Filed under: GM, GMC, USA, Design/Style, Truck, Work

Despite initially launching in just the Crew Cab configuration, the lineup of 2014 GMC Sierra and 2014 Chevrolet Silverado trucks will eventually grow to include three cab sizes and three bed lengths. Oddly enough, our first look at the Regular Cab bodystyle has arrived in a General Motors press release discussing the aerodynamics of the new truck, with an image showing a Sierra Regular Cab testing in the wind tunnel. GMC's website says that Regular Cab and Double Cab models will be available by summer.

While it really didn't take too much imagination to figure out what the two-door version would look like, this Regular Cab Z71 looks pretty sharp with its standard-length 1,981 mm (6.5-feet) bed - a longer bed will also be offered. In regards to the aero tuning of the 2014 Sierra, these images show just how far GM has gone in maximizing the truck's fuel efficiency and reducing its noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels. Interestingly, the press release shows visual evidence that keeping the tailgate up is best for aero - there's always been some Mythbusters-level contention about such things -but GM also says that adding tonneau covers (preferably soft) and running boards can also help improve the overall aerodynamics. Scroll down for all of this aero info in the official press release.

The driver of a small Nissan pickup truck has some explaining to do after getting stuck... in a tree. Most versatile off-road trucks are found stuck in deep mud or snow, but this utilitarian beast was found stuck in an evergreen grove.

Police responded to reports of the tree-climbing truck and found it still in place, clinging to the branches about 3 metres (10 feet) above the ground. The driver was no where to be found, and the vehicle's engine and exhaust system was cold, telling police that the vehicle had been there for some time, undiscovered.

Recreating the scene, it appears the driver of the small truck was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control and 'jumped' a large ditch, which put him on a trajectory that landed him, well... up a tree. The driver later returned to the scene during the police investigation ("Where'd I leave my wallet?") and was charged with 'hit and run' and criminal mischief citations. This unlikely tale unfolded in Portland, Oregon, USA.

Speaking of the police, an officer found himself in a similar predicament when he pulled a U-turn to make a seatbelt related traffic stop, lost control, and hit the guide-wire of a telephone pole. The front bumper of his cruiser followed the wire up the pole, leaving the Dodge police car scampering up the pole like a spooked squirrel. Thankfully, this Memphis police officer was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the incident - no word if the seatbelt-less driver of the car he was attempting to pull over noticed all the commotion behind him.

When an old car or truck offers its dying breath in your driveway and you just don't have the financial or mechanical wherewithal to resuscitate it yet again, you traditionally have to go to the trouble of calling a flatbed or a tow truck to come haul it away. That usually helps to put a few bucks in your wallet and helps recycle some of the vehicle's parts, but the transaction doesn't seem as final or perversely satisfying as the dispatch service that this New Way Cobra Magnum garbage truck offers.

Okay, okay, so this refuse hauler isn't actually designed for this sort of thing, but it's oddly comforting to know that a sanitation truck can compact a hapless Pontiac Grand Am into oblivion. Next time, we won't feel so guilty about slipping that rusty charcoal grille onto the curb next to the cans on garbage day.

Watch the carnage by scrolling to see the video below.

Isuzu has taken to advertising its new KB pickup truck with a unique initiative. The company wanted to apply the Google Street View philosophy to some of South Africa's more remote off-road trails, and the result is Suzuki Trail View. Using multiple action cameras situated in a 3D-printed housing strapped to the top of the truck, the crew began bouncing along dirt and rock paths, recording all the while. They also shot additional video and worked with experts to provide excellent clips on how to navigate common off-road obstacles.

You can watch the making-of video below, and you can head over to the Trail View site to poke around a few South African trails for yourself. All we want to know is, how long before Jeep does the same here in Canada?

Let this be a lesson to those of you who plan to visit Unalaska, Alaska (yes, it's a real city on Unalaska Island in the Aleutian Islands): If you park at Safeway with a garbage bag full of fish fillets in your pickup's bed, the eagles will find you. That's what happened above when an unidentified man parked his Nissan and returned to find a convocation of bald eagles feasting on his fish.

Neither the man nor those parked near his truck could get to their cars for fear of getting a beatdown from The 'Murica Bird, and police were called to break it up, which they did with neither beast nor fowl injured in the process.

Other than being awesome watching, other things we can take away from this video are the question who comes up with bird gathering names (a "murmuration" of herons and an "unkindness" of ravens?), and the bounty of this comment left by user "Abraham" at the KUCB news report: "It's just that the luxury edition has so much more eagle, it saddens me to think of you missing out." See what caused it all in the video below.
The engine will serve up 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, with a six-speed automatic transmission, giving the V6 Sierra a maximum tow rating of 3,266 kg (7,200 pounds) in regular cab, short bed four-wheel drive configuration. GM claims that figure is 227 kg (500 pounds) more than the equivalent Ford F-150 equipped with a 3.7-litre V6, and 318 kg (700 pounds) more than the Ram 1500 with its 3.6-litre V6. Buyers can expect to see more of the 2014 GMC Sierra with the 4.3-litre engine later this year.

While the engine does deliver more torque than either of its main competitors, it falls short on the horsepower front. The 3.7-litre V6 in the F-150 develops 302 hp while the 3.6-litre V6 in the Ram 1500 yields 305 hp. GM says fuel economy estimates for its newest entry will land later this year.

No one's underestimating the importance of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. While General Motors continues to shovel the current generation off dealer lots at an impressive pace, it would be too kind to simply say the old mule has started to show its age. The GMT900 platform that's rolling along under the 2013 model has been underpinning fullsize GM trucks since 2007, and while the Silverado has stayed competitive through most of the intervening six years, the past two haven't been kind to the machine.

Ford just won't quit sharpening its F-150 in one way or another, throwing interior and driveline updates at the stalwart pickup with the fevered pace of a company possessed. Like the Silverado, the F-150 is no fresh piece of hardware, but fuel-efficient and powerful engine options and a well-sorted interior put the truck consistently ahead of the now aged Chevrolet. And then there's the Ram 1500. Chrysler let loose with both barrels with the 2013 update, tearing into the fullsize market with a beautiful cabin, excellent tech and plenty of clever engineering.

Chevy engineers stood back and watched this happen, biting their tongues and whittling away all the while on the next-generation 2014 Silverado. There are only a handful of carryover parts from old machine to new, and the result is a pickup that offers more power, efficiency and refinement than the previous generation while holding the pricing line. This is, without a doubt, the best Silverado ever built, but does that make it the best pickup?

2014 Chevrolet Silverado originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 09 May 2013 12:00:00 EST.
Just imagine for a moment that you're driving across a long stretch of secluded desert highway, and suddenly you see a hand waving at you from inside the vehicle in the rearview mirror. While this might seem like the stuff of scary urban legends, it is exactly what happened to a man last week as he was driving his Nissan pickup through California's High Desert.

According to the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, a motorcycle rider rear-ended the man's pickup at a high rate of speed, throwing the rider into the bed of the truck. Since it was a rough stretch of road that was under construction, the driver mistook the impact for road debris. Witnesses claim the motorcycle rider was traveling "in excess of 209 km/h (130 mph)," and while the rider sustained "minor to moderate" injuries, we imagine that things would likely have been much worse if he hadn't landed in the back of the truck...

Elton Kim probably never imagined that holding an errant driver to account after a minor parking lot skirmish would result in a high-speed hood-hugging, death-defying vigilante stunt. However, as if cut from a James Bond film, the following video shows exactly this scenario unfolding.

The story begins in Georgia, USA, when a woman backed her Ford Fusion into the Kim family's Chevrolet Avalanche. Mr Kim confronted the careless driver before she could leave the scene and demanded the woman stop her car to discuss the damages. The unknown woman, however, had other plans, and drove right at Kim - at which point he jumped onto the hood of her car to avoid being run over. The neurotic driver then sped for the highway where the following footage was captured by a concerned motorist.

Theresa Kim, wife of Mr Kim, stated that she "didn't think [the driver] wanted to hurt him, but for some reason she never stopped." We believe Mrs Kim could take a more supportive stance for her husband's sake - he was, after all, trying to look after her Chevy.

Thanks to the quick-to-screen-shot folks at GM Authority, we now have our first look at what is likely the 2014-15 GMC Sierra Denali. GMA reports that the image you see here was temporarily posted on the GMC consumer site, though as you can see now, when you scroll over the "trucks" tab, the image has been removed.

GM Authority states that because the truck in this image wears a blacked-out lower bumper, redesigned grille insert and shiny wheels, this has got to be the upmarket Denali version of the fully redesigned 2014 model year Sierra. The Chevrolet Silverado will be getting a similar treatment, as we've seen in recent spy shots, dubbed the High Country.

Expect the Sierra Denali to ride on large, unique wheels (the one we spied earlier this year was fitted with 21-inch rollers), and feature a huge helping of luxurious interior amenities, as well as premium features like xenon headlamps. An official on-sale date for the Denali has not been released, though it's been reported that the high-grade Sierra, along with its Silverado counterpart, will arrive after the Texas State Fair this summer.

Steven Simonar may have passed you on the highway, and you'd never have known that the driver of the pickup truck in the neighbouring lane had no arms. Simonar has been honing his driving skills sans upper limbs for the last 28 years - and he's never encountered any issues, save for the fact that he can't buckle up unassisted.

Over the course of nearly three decades this enterprising man has adapted five vehicles with a special wheel and stirrup that allow him to steer with his left foot while using the brake and accelerator pedals as normal. Simonar has managed to steer clear of accidents and traffic tickets... until now.

Last week, during a routine police spot check held by the RCMP and local Saskatoon Police Services, the officer who pulled him over noticed that he was not wearing his seatbelt. A ticket was written for $175 and Simonar states that this is the first time he's ever received such a ticket, "It never dawned on me I'd get a ticket, because I've been stopped numerous times and I've never had an issue," he said. "You just have to look once to figure it out."

Simonar is now fighting the ticket, but it's not the $175 penalty that has him most upset. During the course of the spot check he claims that one of the officers said, "Well if he can't put his seatbelt on maybe he shouldn't be driving." While road safety must take precedence, the alleged statement does sound insensitive to Simonar's plight. In the end, the courts will decide, but we must acknowledge Simonar for his determination and grit to keep driving despite his significant handicap.

Political correctness can be a little over-rated at times and we understand that once in a while some people want to break free from their linguistic filter. The author of this Calgary Craigslist ad smashed several PC formalities while attempting to sell his pickup truck, entwining Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Bulgarian prostitutes, midgets and Hello Kitty into one comedic, somewhat offensive sales effort with NSFW lingo.

The truck for sale is a 5-speed manual, 1993 Nissan D21 light-duty pickup (as pictured above - though purportedly in much worse shape) with 285,000 kilometres on the odometer. It appears the truck remains unsold, in case you were wondering. The asking price may be the only attractive facet of this vehicle, a handsome $499.00. You can view the original ad here.

Our favourite one liner? "The rear wheel wells are rusting out faster than Stephen Harper's sense of ethics and responsibility."
The camouflaged Ford F-150 SVT Raptor prototype, captured above blazing its way across the desert during a test run, had company engineers giggling in amazement, reveals Jamal Hameedi in Autoweek's latest video. Ford's global performance vehicle chief engineer, accompanied by Bruce Williams, Ford senior exterior designer, sat down with the publication to discuss the concept and development of the automaker's super off-road truck.

Designing a high-performance pickup in 2008, right when the cost of gasoline was going through the roof, seemed insane at the time but the team pushed forward with the innovative vehicle regardless. The interview includes plenty of B-roll footage as visual candy, and the conversations include discussions about exterior design, ride comfort, anti-lock brake tuning, suspension engineering, weight reduction and why it was necessary to make the Raptor, a high-performance off-road truck with the DNA of a Baja Racer, visually different than Ford's standard F-150.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to race through traffic in a police car, chasing the baddies? Perhaps you've had a day dream wherein you're navigating a brutal snow storm in an ambulance, a precious life on the line? Or maybe you fancy a run in a big red rig, piloting a fire truck to save a cat up a tree? Police officers, firefighters and paramedics all require exceptional driving skills to navigate our roadways en route to emergencies - without causing additional emergencies. But how do they go full-throttle without breaking any laws - does a different rule book apply?

Well, sort of. Emergency vehicles are granted certain exemptions from the highway traffic act (HTA) enforced across each respective province. We'll focus on Ontario's HTA as an example for your consideration.

Under the HTA, the speed limit is the speed limit, as you've likely found out the hard way - mirrors full of red and blue. Not so for emergency vehicles, as evidenced in the Ontario HTA.

Scroll down to read the subtleties of the law, and learn how emergency vehicles play by a slightly different set of rules. Then check out how you can help emergency vehicles get to the scene quickly and safely.

The Mercedes-Benz Unimog, the superhero villain of the off-road world that's just waiting to make the jump to Transformer, has been completely upgraded for its new generation. There are ten models, expanding the range and getting new designations across the traditional all-terrain series and the implement-carrier series. Panoramic cabins get more visibility, multifunction steering wheels and better dash clusters, improved HVAC and a three-mode central tire inflation system. Outside, there are new items like LED headlights and daytime running lamps in the bumper, roof-mounted windshield wipers and a front-camera monitor for the implement carrier.

The new engine lineup is compliant with Euro VI, featuring four- and six-cylinder BlueEfficiency diesel engines putting out anywhere from 156 horsepower to 354 hp. Powerplant placement has also been tweaked, the chassis members getting a revised curve to place the engine a bit further back and lower, maintaining off-road clearance and lowering the Unimog's centre of gravity. The new location of the engine means the cabin has more room, and the wheelbase is shorter. Combined with a higher turning angle, the Unimog has a smaller turning radius than before.

The implement carrier gets what's called a "synergistic traveling drive," the bonus being that drivers don't need to stop in order to use an attachment - a hydrostatic transmission works with the regular manual transmission at up to 31 kilometers per hour for seamless switching.

Those are just a tiny number of the changes in the new monsters from Mercedes-Benz. You can find out enough about them in the videos and three press releases below to become a certified dealer.
