Back in March at the Geneva Motor Show, we had all manner of shiny new baubles trying to distract us from the Bertone Jet 2+2, a one-off from the Italian design house that basically amounted to an Aston Martin Rapide wagon. Yet we still couldn't take our eyes off the car and mutter a few "what ifs." The showcar was conceived as a single vehicle at the behest of one of Bertone's well-heeled customers, but what if the one-off wasn't so one-off? Could an estate conversion like this mount a successful small production run?

According to Autocar, the answer is a riff on "Definitely. Maybe." The British magazine says that Aston Martin and Bertone want to do the deed and are investigating a "small-scale production run," but how small remains anyone's guess. Autocar hypothesizes that if fewer than 10 cars are made, they will be built in Turin near Bertone's headquarters. If the run is larger, however, production would likely be at Aston's home facilities in Gaydon. Of course, there are legal hoops to jump through, naming concerns, and all other manner of nettles to negotiate before the Jet 2+2 can transition into production reality.

So... how much for this still-theoretical, limited-edition couture-n'-kiddie-hauler? Your guess is as good as ours, but the donor Rapide starts above $200,000, and one has to assume that such limited volume would confer a much higher price on the Jet's flanks. Whether that means that it could be costlier than the nearly US$300,000 Vanquish remains to be seen.
Continue reading Aston Martin Rapide wagon headed for production?

Aston Martin Rapide wagon headed for production? originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 06 Jun 2013 11:15:00 EST.

If ever there were an award for the most bastardized label in the automotive world, the Gran Turismo/Grand Touring/GT moniker would be an easy frontrunner. Once reserved solely for sporty coupes, the GT letters have taken a big hit over the years, but things got downright embarrassing with the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo. For 2013, Hyundai is helping to muddy the waters even further by slapping a GT badge onto the hatchback version of its top-selling model, the Elantra.

In the case of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT, though, this name is just recycling the Elantra GT name from the early 2000s, albeit on a more stylish, modern and all-around better five-door. Hyundai has created quite a competitive lineup since its Fluidic Sculpture design language hit the market, but one area that it has paled in comparison to rival automakers is in the hatchback department. With a plethora of budget-minded compact cars currently on sale, Hyundai now finds itself in the unique position of being the only automaker to offer a compact sedan, coupe and hatchback with the 2013 Elantra. Still, with the compact segment more crowded than a public school classroom, we spent a week with the new Elantra GT to see how it stacks up against the hatchback competition.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT

2013 Hyundai Elantra GT originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Mon, 03 Jun 2013 11:57:00 EST.
As stylish as the new Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class already is, it sounds like the automaker is considering a shooting brake version similar to what was recently introduced for the larger CLS-Class. What Car? recently talked to Mercedes design boss Gordon Wagener, who indicated that a cargo-friendly version of the swoopy sedan may be in the works.

Having driven the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake last year, we could certainly see a CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake being quite a lustworthy ride, but like its bigger brother, we would be surprised to see the CLA-Class Shooting Brake show up in North America. In the same interview, Wagener also shot down rumours of a coupe or convertible version of the A-Class, upon which the CLA is built.

Back in 2008, I was fortunate enough to test the second-generation Audi RS6 Avant in southern France on the supremely well-sorted circuit at Le Castellet, a.k.a. Paul Ricard. I was thrown out there with the 572-horsepower bi-turbo 5.0-litre V10-equipped behemoth behind one of Audi's DTM pros and was convinced in short order that the flaming hippo in my hands was going to get the better of me on one or another of the track's tight esses. I made it out alive and invigorated, of course, but knew that that RS6 Avant was the heaviest that these thunderwagons should ever be allowed to get. At around 2,109 kg (4,650 pounds) with driver aboard, it was just way more lateral momentum at speed than any pilot needs on a track - or for that matter, on a favourite hot curving road.

Now it's time for the 2013 Audi RS6 Avant to lay us out with a flying scissor kick from the corner ropes. This version of the highway and byway marauder from Quattro GmbH is a decidedly greater piece of work than was the car I drove in 2008. This time, there will only be the Avant body configuration - no RS6 sedan - and, as with the previous generation, North America won't be at the receiving end when deliveries start at the end of July this year.

I can only whine loudly about what a pity that is; the new RS6 Avant with its 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 is the absolute best Audi RS model I have tested in over a decade. It weighs in 100 kg (220 pounds) less than its predecessor, loses 20 horsepower, gains 37 pound-feet of torque, and torches the previous car's acceleration time to 60 miles per hour (96 km/h) by seven-tenths of a second, or in other words, it needs only 3.8 seconds. That's seriously hair-brained action in a family-car wrapper. There are a few reasons as to why it's that much quicker, but one key is the greater 17.4 psi (120 kPa) of boost pressure from each turbocharger versus the 10.2 psi (70 kPa) per unit on the last generation's spec sheet. Then there are the tighter ratios of the eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox against the six-speed Tiptronic of 2008.

2013 Audi RS6 Avant [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 24 Apr 2013 12:00:00 EST.
Only a flatworm would not have predicted the Cadillac ATS would help increase sales for America's erstwhile luxury brand of record; however, even the best automotive oracles didn't realize by how much: The ATS fueled a 49 per cent increase of the brand's year-on-year sales in March, the sixth straight month of growth for Cadillac. The momentum helped push General Motors to post a 6.4 per cent increase in sales in March versus 2012, leading its domestic competitors.

Dealership salesmen are among the first to register the shift occurring at Cadillac. A dealer related an incident in which he helped a mother affix a baby seat in a car for a test drive, explaining that as opposed to the older buyers that are still a Cadillac mainstay he's getting "a pretty diverse group that's coming through the door now" who are "younger and better educated." Aided by incentives on the ATS, Cadillac's sales are up 38 per cent so far this year, overtaking Acura as the fourth best selling luxury brand, and GM stock is benefiting with incremental gains because of it. Based on early response, the new 2014 Cadillac CTS should keep things going in the same direction.

The trend at the Wreath and Crest is part of a larger sales trend happening among domestics - with other models like the Dodge Dart and Ford Fusion doing well - and overall North American car sales. Head over to Bloomberg for the big picture and role the ATS plays in it.

Mentioned at the debut of the redesigned Mercedes-Benz E-Class back in January, Mercedes has finally pulled back the curtain on the E63 AMG S, which was on display at the New York Auto Show in wagon guise. The 2014 E63 AMG S ups the ante even more from a "base" E63 AMG, improving the car's performance and styling - not that it needed help with either to begin with.

Our favorite S-model upgrade is the added output tweaked out of the 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, which represents a substantial gain of 27 hp and 59 lb-ft of torque over the stock E63. In wagon form, the E63 AMG S can run from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.6 seconds and hit an electronically limited top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph). All 2014 E63 AMGs come with Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, but the S-Model adds in a limited-slip rear differential for improved performance.

Mercedes has made sure that the extra money being spent on the S-Model is instantly noticeable with slightly different design cues and black along with 10-spoke wheels with red brake calipers peeking through. Plenty of silver-chrome and high-gloss black accents finish off the exterior styling, while the interior adds Alcantara on the steering wheel, accent stitching on the leather and contrasting silver seat belts on models with the black interior. Scroll down for an official video and press release.

The 2014 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is being launched to a pretty cynical automotive press brigade. You know it. We know it. Heck, even BMW knows it. We've just returned from driving it on the rather unforgiving and sometimes nasty roads of Sicily, and even before we got behind the wheel, many of our media colleagues were busying themselves doubting the 3 GT's very raison d'être. So, despite the always excellent Sicilian hospitality, the day's atmosphere was kind of fragile.

While the press in attendance seemed determined to nail every product expert to the wall for having been even tangentially associated with the larger 5 Series Gran Turismo, it seemed that BMW decided ahead of time to not introduce such a sensitive discussion topic. That strategy would do little to smooth things over as everyone started digging for dirt on BMW's so far clumsy Gran Turismo franchise.

As it turns out, we like the 3 GT despite so many packaging and design cards being stacked against it just by association with the 5 GT precedent. Automotive journalists are sometimes wrong en masse and this case of prejudice toward the 3 GT is one of those times.

And besides, much in the way the entire Buick brand still exists because China fell in love with it (entirely to General Motors' dumb-luck surprise), the 5 GT has somewhat thrived due to similar circumstances. The odd-duck 5 Series version - arguably the least appealing design ever to roll out of the halls of BMW - has found its savior almost exclusively in the Land of Confucius. After driving this new 3 GT, we have no reason to doubt it will find far more favour not just in China, but in all of BMW's major markets.
Continue reading 2014 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo [w/video]

2014 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 21 Mar 2013 11:57:00 EST.
The Volvo XC90 was a big step for the Swedish automaker in 2003, but the midsize crossover has changed very little since its introduction. All that's about to change as Volvo starts its initial development on the 2015 XC90, which we see for the first time in these spy shots showing a cobbled-together XC70.

Like the current XC90, the next-generation model will be both longer and wider than the XC70 - judging by the modifications made to this mule's body - which will continue to allow Volvo's flagship crossover and provide three rows of seating. The next XC90 will ride on a new platform that will eventually make up around two-thirds of all Volvo sales, called the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA).

Our shooter managed to find out the registration number for this mule, which indicated that it was powered by a five-cylinder diesel, but we expect the automaker to start stepping away from its current powertrains with a big push toward smaller engines courtesy of the new Volvo Engine Architecture (VEA). Rumor has it that the future engine lineup for the XC90 will rely heavily on turbocharged four-cylinder engines and eight-speed automatic transmissions, which will likely eliminate or lessen some of the current mills available like a straight-six or V8.

The automaker previously stated that the new XC90 would debut in late 2014, but it sounds like delays could push the launch into early 2015.

Canadians love wagons, particularly Volvo wagons. The Swedish beasts of burden have a polished, classy flair to them that appeals to our rather developed automotive tastes - if we might say so ourselves.

Those who pine for the new Volvo V60 wagon sold overseas may be in luck; according to Automotive News, Volvo is rethinking its decision to not sell the V60 wagon in the North America. The automaker had originally decided to not offer the V60 in our market but rumour has it Volvo may be changing their minds on the matter. A decision is expected to be made sometime in the next quarter, and if approved, sales of the V60 could begin in Canada within the next year.

Leave it to Bertone to take a stab at improving the look of the Aston Martin Rapide. The coachbuilder may have done just that with its Jet 2+2 shooting brake unveiled here at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Using the sexy Aston four-door as a basis, the coachbuilder worked the Aston's rear quarters and lifted the roof into a proper hatch, resulting in a machine with plenty of cargo space out back (though rear seat room doesn't appear to be much better than the production sedan). An LED span joins the vehicle's two taillights, and the design looks far more cohesive than the original renderings led us to believe.

An unnamed collector commissioned the one-off build, and Bertone is using the longroof to mark the 60th anniversary of the company's first partnership with Aston Martin. We couldn't think of a better way to commemorate the date. The stock 6.0-litre V12 remains unsullied, cranking out 476 horsepower, though Bertone has given the interior a once-over with unique wood, glazed aluminum and two leather colors specified by the individual who commissioned the car. Check out the full press release below for more information.
Continue reading Bertone Jet 2+2 is a family-style Aston Martin Rapide

Bertone Jet 2+2 is a family-style Aston Martin Rapide originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 06 Mar 2013 13:30:00 EST.
With the introduction of the newest Volkswagen Golf Variant, we get an early look at what will most likely be the next-generation Jetta SportWagen here in North America. To further wet our appetities, VW is now teasing something a little sportier with the Concept R-Line. Looking the part of a GTI wagon (or a stretched Golf R), the Golf Variant Concept R-Line has a production-ready appearance that has us hoping we'll see this sporty wagon sooner rather than later.

The R-Line starts off with a new fascia that isn't quite as aggressive as the recently introduced GTI, but it gives the new styling some extra punch. Below the fascia is a lower splitter that visually carries back into the rocker panel extensions, and the rear of the car gets some bright exhaust tips and a rear diffuser. The Lapis Blue Metallic paint job probably does enough on its own to add a sporty flair to the Golf wagon, and it's all finished off with 18-inch split-spoke wheels. Inside, the Concept R-Line shows off sport seats wrapped in carbon leather featuring blue nappa inserts in the middle.

Rightfully so, VW brought the Concept R-Line to Geneva with its TDI and 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. A sporty, all-wheel-drive diesel wagon? Yes, please. Scroll down for the full press blast with all the details.
Continue reading Volkswagen Golf Variant Concept R-Line puts the sport in SportWagen

Volkswagen Golf Variant Concept R-Line puts the sport in SportWagen originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Wed, 06 Mar 2013 06:30:00 EST.

Audi is exploring a variety of sustainable transportation technologies beyond the traditional diesel, hybrid, plug-in and electric options, including the compressed natural gas A3 Sportback G-Tron that debuted today at the Geneva Motor Show.

The most interesting thing about this rather innocuous-looking A3 Sportback is that when run on Audi e-gas, the car becomes completely carbon neutral, emitting no more CO2 than was chemically input in this special fuel's production. Audi has already broken ground on a new plant - powered by renewable energy, of course - that uses electrolysis to produce e-gas, which could then be made available through any natural gas distribution network.

A turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine burns the e-gas, or any garden variety CNG, for 110 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque, but the real story lies in the machine's natural gas tanks. The two light-weight composite vessels weigh in at just under 27 kg (60 pounds) each and can store a shave over 14 kg (30 pounds) of fuel combined and 2,900 psi. The tanks are made from a four-layer composite comprised of a gas-impermeable polyamide polymer, carbon fibre-reinforced plastic, glass fibre reinforced polymer and a high-strength epoxy resin.

The A3 Sportback G-Tron also features a new gas regulator to keep the fuel at the correct pressure for any given engine speed. If the tank pressure falls below 145 psi, the engine automatically and seamlessly switches over to gasoline operation. With its two on-board fuel sources, the five-door offers a bladder-busting range of approximately 1,300 kilometres (807 miles).

In addition to several other versions of the Golf, Volkswagen is debuting the new Golf Variant (read: wagon) here at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. And if this bigger version of the Golf looks like it might fit right at home in North America, it's because we could possibly see some version of this car as the next-generation Jetta SportWagen here on our shores.

Volkswagen is debuting the Golf Variant with two efficient diesel engines, rated at 110 and 150 horsepower, the smaller of which is good for an impressive 3.3L/100km (71.3 mpg) on the European cycle (when mated to a six-speed manual transmission). The Golf Variant also gets a version of Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, making it incredibly all-weather capable.

It's a handsome estate, and it wears the new Golf's design language well. We can't say for sure if this car will actually make its way to Canadian dealerships, but given the fact that the current Jetta SportWagen still rides on the old Golf platform, the odds look to be in our favour.
Continue reading Volkswagen Golf Variant will make a lovely Jetta SportWagen

Volkswagen Golf Variant will make a lovely Jetta SportWagen originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Tue, 05 Mar 2013 16:30:00 EST.
Despite its substantial functionality, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo has not sold as well as hoped here on our shores - so much so that the Germans have reportedly been rethinking the decision to not offer the 5 Series Touring in North America. So forgive us, then, for questioning the motives behind this new GT version of the smaller 3 Series, which will arrive in the North America this summer in both 328i and 335i variants.

Nevertheless, the 3 Series GT makes its official debut here at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, and despite its focus on rakishness (or something), it's actually more functional and spacious than the 3 Series Sport Wagon. That's right - thanks to an extra 109 mm (4.3 inches) of wheelbase, 200 mm (7.9 inches) of length and 81 mm (3.2 inches) of height, the 3GT offers more space for rear passengers and one more cubic foot of storage overall.

Engine choices are unchanged from the 3 Series sedan, with the 328i getting a 240 horsepower 2.0 litre turbo-four and the 335i utilizing a 300-horsepower turbo-six. Pricing will be announced closer to the car's on-sale date this summer.

Holy moly! Despite the fact that Audi first released details on its 2013 RS6 Avant back in December, we're still just as smitten with it now as we were a couple months ago. And why wouldn't we be? This stunning piece of forbidden fruit combines two of our favourite things: fast Audis and useful wagons.

The meat and potatoes behind the RS6 Avant is its twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, tuned to crank out 560 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the all-wheel-drive wagon can scoot to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Opting for the Dynamic package ups that v-max to 280 km/h (174 mph), and selecting the Dynamic Plus pack increases that even further to 305 km/h (190 mph).

This RS6 Avant certainly looks the part of an extreme ass-hauler, fitted with the usual RS-spec gaping air intakes, 21-inch wheels, sport exhaust and carbon fibre ceramic brakes. Combine all that goodness with dynamic ride control, an adaptive air suspension and torque-vectoring Quattro all-wheel drive, and we have no doubt that this thing will scare off every other station wagon in the parking lot. (Well, except maybe that Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Woof.)

Just last week, when we brought you news of a new Volkswagen Golf variant out and testing in Europe, we had no idea we were being so literal with out description. For it seems that VW has every intention of calling its new Golf wagon, making its Geneva debut, the "Golf Variant."

Odd/interesting sobriquets taken as read then, there's a lot to like about this new small wagon from VW. The Variant will shed some 105 KG (232 pounds) in this generation, and will come to market with two efficient TDI engines. Volkswagen isn't giving us displacement figures for either yet, but we're told the diesels will come with outputs of 110 and 150 horsepower. The 110-hp TDI BlueMotion Varient will be good for a whopping 3.3 L/100km (71.3 mpg) on the European cycle, when mated to the six-speed manual transmission.

The German automaker has brought along an all-wheel-drive 4Motion version of the Gold Variant to bow in Geneva, as well, and a natural gas-burning TGI BlueMotion is said to be "in the pipeline."

No word yet has to when or how the Golf Variant will make its transition to the North American market, though there's a decent likelihood that some version of it will become our new Jetta SportWagen. Europeans can expect the Variant to appear for sale in August of this year.

The Civic Tourer concept adds a little length and height to the current Civic hatchback sold in Europe, stretching the shape every which way to make a new wagon model that will compete with cars like the new Volkswagen Golf Variant, which is also making its debut in Geneva this week.

Wagons ho! These three images of the upcoming Volkswagen Golf Wagon have leaked online ahead of the car's official debut, which may very well be at the Geneva Motor Show. Looking over the photos doesn't really bring any surprises - after all, this is a VW Golf with a wagon rear end grafted on, or basically what we expect the next Jetta SportWagen will be.

We can only share these three images at this time, but fret not, folks. There's little doubt that all the details and images will be flowing from Volkswagen in short order. In the meantime, click on the images below to view them in high resolution and click here to view a video on VW's new hybrid tech.

Without a lot of information to go with them, our camera-toting spies have captured some new images of a Volkswagen Golf wagon variant that is almost completely undisguised. In fact, the one piece of camouflage on the tidy wagon would probably have gone unnoticed to most casual viewers. Look closely at the rear three-quarter view of the car and you'll notice that the apparent taillight clusters are actually fakes - the outline of the real units is faintly visible behind the blue bodywork and the sticker-like fake taillights.

It's a good guess then, that this Golf wagon (called a Golf Kombi by our spy photographer) is a prototype that's pretty far along in the development cycle for Volkswagen. We can't be sure what impact this will have on the company's small wagon offering here in North America, but we'd be pretty surprised if something very like this didn't end up as the next Jetta SportWagen. We might well have more information on that front, after we visit Geneva next week.
Continue reading Volkswagen Golf Wagon caught completely uncovered

Volkswagen Golf Wagon caught completely uncovered originally appeared on Autoblog Canada on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 15:45:00 EST.

The last wagon attempt from Jaguar was the X-Type, built between 2003 and that model line's unceremonious end in 2009. That X-Type and its legacy represent a real dog of a chapter for Jaguar, and for the Halewood factory where the barker was built. It was the final joke told prior to the brand's proper rebirth phase - a phase we're enjoying the heck out of today.

Current magnanimous Jaguar owner Tata can be thanked for this new wagon, the XF Sportbrake. Like all newness coming from Jag these days, this new wagon also feels lightyears more serious an offering, ready to compete squarely with established premium wagon makers across Europe. A Jaguar wagon in North America is a far-off priority for the company, frankly. Still we deserve to know what we're missing for the time being from this (sometimes overly) cherished British firm.

I was given a right-hand-drive 3.0-litre turbodiesel XF Sportbrake. Jaguar currently offers only diesel powerplants in the wagon due to the European market buying nearly 100 per cent of its wagon bodies with the far more efficient powerplants. And on the 64 kilometres (40 miles) from Welshpool over to Bala at the edge of Wales' Snowdonia National Park, there's some driving to be done.
